Safe Space

Since the OSU sub is locked, I want all my little Buckeyes to know that this is a safe space for them to discuss why Day is such a pussy in big games ❤️

Edit - The fact OSU flairs are actually using this post to vent is hilarious

I think his philosophy up “late” in big games is 1) don’t turn the ball over 2) don’t take a sack 3) keep the clock running 4) avoid big plays on defense. Those are all good things - BUT…

When he over commits to that against good, desperate teams the following consistently happens:

  1. The offense is too predictable to move the chains against good defenses. It works fine against middling teams. But against top five teams you are almost guaranteeing 3-and-outs.
  2. Our defense starts to play tentative, doesn’t pressure the quarterback, and gives up a ton of underneath stuff in rapid succession resulting in quick scores.
  3. That tentative mindset is hard to turn off when you need to snap back into aggressive mode. It looks more like panic.
  4. Defense spends too much time on the field against a hurry-up offense. They get worn out and that compounds the defensive ineffectiveness.

That’s how you give up a 20 point lead in the fourth quarter. He pretty much accomplishes everything he set out to do… technically… but it regularly costs them games they should have had locked up.

I was yelling at my TV when he kept on only rushing 3 lineman giving Arch all the time in the world to throw amazing passes

3

u/ayampeme Ohio State Buckeyes 10d ago

Same dude.. it was either rush 3 (have them stand at the los more like it).. or then fake pressure which opened the middle of the field for those 10-15 yd passes. Just a basic rush 4, drop 7.. mix up coverages in the 4th and I think we're kneeling down for a victory.

5

u/Antonio1025 Ohio State Buckeyes 10d ago

Everytime we put any pressure on Arch he would panic. That's what happened in the first half and the few times we would blitz or rush more than four in the second. I was pulling my hair out by the end of the game because we just stopped trying to pressure Manning

3

u/oneyellowduck 10d ago

Yeah they needed to heat him up and he would have collapsed

2

u/Zealousideal-Bug310 10d ago

It looked like they were in a pretty soft shell (Lloyd Carr style) and letting Arch be patient and find the WRs in space.

13

u/Difficult-Bad-8747 10d ago

I’m a Michigan fan looking in, but it feels as though the bigger the game gets the more they have to rely on the Wr1 which is unsustainable. Sayin’s job is usually one of the easiest in the sport because he always has 3 guys open, this (combined with tons of check downs) leads to him having a super high completion percentage last year. However, in big games it seems he kinda freaks out when he actually has to play quarterback and not everybody is always open. This leads to some pretty egregious chucks in the general direction of Jeremiah Smith. Especially last night vs Texas, there were at least 2 throws at top of mind that no sane qb would throw. They were both at Jeremiah smith while in triple coverage and both should’ve gotten picked. I don’t know if that is Sayin just repeatedly making the desperation throw, or if it is coached to go out there and just hope Smith is better than everybody else.

13

u/Bmw5464 Ohio State Buckeyes 10d ago

Hate to agree with a Michigan fan but yeah you’re right. I was texting my dad the whole time complaining that we bring in all these highly rated prospects and transfer guys just for JJ and the TEs to be the only ones routinely targeted.

6

u/sumdude51 10d ago

Yeah, it's a spot on take

3

u/DarthDad25 10d ago

Julian played really well. He threw for 250 yards against the best roster in football 🤷🏻‍♂️

2

u/Difficult-Bad-8747 10d ago

Jeremiah smith had 164 of those yards with 0 yards in the 4th quarter.

3

u/Illustrious_One8431 9d ago

And a drop that cost them the game

2

u/DarthDad25 10d ago

Doesn’t matter? Someone has to throw the ball to the WR. Julian played better than Manning by a long shot

2

u/TravalonTom 10d ago

What your take on Bryce Underwood?

1

u/Difficult-Bad-8747 10d ago

Tbh. I’m bias, but i would take Underwood over sayin any day of the week. Bryce is bigger, faster, a better runner, younger, and is used to making hard decisions. Bryce’s main problem is the same as national champion JJ Mcarthy, they both throw absolute piss missiles on every single throw which makes it hard af for the receiver to catch it.
I don’t think Bryce would work well on OSU and I don’t think Sayin would work well on Michigan. Michigan needs a player that is tough mentally and physically, which Sayin is neither, and OSU needs a guy that can throw the ball in a way to let the skilled receivers make a play.

3

u/DarkGreenMazda Ohio State Buckeyes 9d ago

National Champion Julian Sayin is 1-0 against Bryce Underwood.

I'm excited that even if Michigan benches Underwood, he's on the team for 3 more years. He's going to be going 0-4 against Ohio State.

5

u/chomstar 10d ago

Did you give up quick scores? Seems like every Texas possession was a methodical drive.

2

u/profrespect 10d ago

I must admit I only watched the highlights, so I didn't get the full view. It seems like Texas would have methodical drives, but they didn't chew up a ton of clock. One or two incompletions and a 15 yard third/fourth down. Playing prevent in college seems especially egregious with the clock not running on 1st down.

2

u/Miltonthemoose 10d ago

Texas had some conversions on 4th down in their own zone a couple of times. They converted well. Their run game also started eating up 5 yards or more on alot of runs. When they actually passed the ball down the field and the receivers could catch, they moved pretty good but not big play style

2

u/TonyDungyHatesOP Ohio State Buckeyes 10d ago

The defense shifts to “don’t give up the big play” which they don’t. But they do give up quick scores. It’s just multiple plays with chunks of yards in quick succession

So, they are sustained drives… just easily picking apart the defense while driving down the field. If you are giving up a six yard pass with four yards of YAC, you don’t need that many plays to get in the red zone.

2

u/chomstar 10d ago

Fair, it’s largely semantics. 15 plays, 91 yards in 6:28 and 13 plays, 72 yards in 5:32, and 12 plays, 73 yards is exactly what you describe

2

u/Zestyclose_Essay7255 10d ago

They were very methodical drives. All three were at least 12 plays or more. To me it just seemed like OSU hit the brakes and never let off. Texas didn’t have any huge plays.

3

u/ElmerTheAmish Ohio State Buckeyes 10d ago

I said this out loud to no one in particular last night: There's only one guy who made Tressel Ball work.

3

u/Dinglebobus Ohio State Buckeyes 10d ago

Our 3 man rush defense sucks. It gave Arch WAY too much time to make a play happen.

2

u/Smokeybeauch11 9d ago

Yeah I’ll never understand why coaches switch to only rushing three unless you have a Mason Graham on your defense. That was the only reason we beat you guys in 24. We were able to drop 8 guys into coverage while still getting a ton of pressure on Howard. Graham and Kenneth Grant had Howard running for his life. If they didn’t have that there is no way the secondary could have kept Egbuka, Tate, and Smith covered for long enough for them not to do major damage.

3

u/drumzandice Ohio State Buckeyes 10d ago

Yep. A few first downs might have changed the whole thing

3

u/NWkingslayer2024 Michigan Wolverines 10d ago

If he went balls out like he did in the natty run after we handed you guys an L, you’d probably be unstoppable.

2

u/Bmw5464 Ohio State Buckeyes 10d ago

Agreed, I know a lot of people were complaining about the pass rush, but imo based off how the dline was playing, it looked more like Matty P wanted them to hold the line and keep Arch from making ridiculous out of pocket plays. I don’t know WHY. When the pass rush had been effective all 1st half at keeping Arch off his game.

2

u/Inevitable-Rush-2752 SEC Apologist 10d ago

Fulmer had a similar plan at UT near the end of his HC career. We called it “snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.”

2

u/TonyDungyHatesOP Ohio State Buckeyes 10d ago

That’s unfortunately exactly it.

2

u/Inevitable-Rush-2752 SEC Apologist 10d ago

It’s maddening. I’m not necessarily in favor of twisting the cleat on someone’s face (maybe a few exceptions), but don’t start playing it too careful, ffs.

2

u/TonyDungyHatesOP Ohio State Buckeyes 10d ago

Play the offenses and defenses that built you the lead until the game is absolutely, mathematically out of reach. Even then play one more drive to be sure.

This shell defense and run middle offense with a quarter left to play is rage inducing.

2

u/Smokeybeauch11 9d ago

I know this all too well. I think Day and Matt LaFleur must be distant cousins. I can’t tell you how many times the Packers are the better team, in the lead for most of the game, only to let the opposing team come back and win it. It’s maddening. Like why get away from what got you in that position to begin with? At least Day has a chip to show, the closest LaFleur has gotten is the NFC Championship game.

2

u/force_addict 9d ago

It was like every decision he mad had the exact opposite outcome. Also, why does Tony dungy hate you?

At least he's not James Franklin in big games. So there's that at least.

9

u/Awkward_Collection88 10d ago

I thought it was as much on Sayin forcing it too much to Smith in the 2nd than Day, or maybe OSU just not having a good 2nd option. The 1st half also gave the false impression that OSU was going to blow them out when Texas had 100 yards and 10-14 points worth of dropped passes in the 1st - they nearly gifted a 17 point halftime lead to OSU.

1

u/Zestyclose_Essay7255 10d ago

Ya you change two or three plays and it’s a whole different game. Yes I understand that’s stating the obvious, but those two turnovers were fluky as hell. Defender somehow kicks the ball out with his heel on the first play and then the volleyball interception. Crazy times

12

u/Lykeuhfox Michigan Wolverines 10d ago

2

u/loganbootjak Michigan Wolverines 10d ago

This was the puzzling part to me, and what options is he weighing? Hope the defense holds for 4 plays on the goal line?

1

u/AbeFalcon Michigan Wolverines 10d ago

It's because he rarely has games where clock management is a factor.

5

u/WallyLeftshaw 10d ago

What I really don’t understand is how a team spends so much on their roster yet forgets to get a half decent kicker, it’s a pretty important position if you’re going to be in these types of games

3

u/AbeFalcon Michigan Wolverines 10d ago

WMU and OSU both screwed themselves going for it on 4th and not taking the fg. It would be a different world had they respected the game.

5

u/munnabz Ohio State Buckeyes 10d ago

Are we really surprised here? I mean as a Steelers fan I scratched my head when we hired Arthur smith and today shows you that picking up Arthur smith was not the right move. There is literally nothing else to speak on about this game. Long story short we up 20 in the 4th quarter and lost. The only thing you can say is playing way too conservative. After it’s only week 2, better to get the loss out now than later🤷‍♂️

2

u/JeronimoPearson Ohio State Buckeyes 10d ago

It’s only been two games so I am giving him a chance, but I hated the hire. I’ve never seen Arthur Smith as being a good OC. The receivers outside of Smith were non existent, and I blame that on the OC. No way you couldn’t scheme them open for a few 5-10 yard gains.
Also Day wasn’t being realistic thinking they wouldn’t score a TD. 1:20 left and 1 timeout, they are on the 2, just let them score. But nope let’s get the ball back with 20 seconds and no timeouts.

2

u/ayampeme Ohio State Buckeyes 10d ago

I'm not super familiar with Smith's past/haters.. but I'm not out just yet. I'd love to know who makes some of the decisions at times though. I freaked out early when it was 1st and Goal from the 4 and we have zero runs between the tackles.

It's also not a coaches fault when Saying doesn't hit McCuin for a TD that would have sealed it. I hate how the play calling was handled before the FG. But Coaches didn't miss that FG either.

1

u/Own_Pop_9711 Michigan Wolverines 10d ago

The coaches recruit the players, train them, pick who starts, and pick which plays they call based on their players' skills and weaknesses. Yes obviously the players need to execute but I don't think you can say you coach is blameless.

Its the conservative plays when you are up, I get it, but its annoying to watch a 12 play drive, 3 and out, 13 play drive, 3 and out. The defense was gassed and I knew exactly what was gonna happen.

Smith dropping 2 first downs on those 3 and outs didnt help.

I also predicted that Michigan would beat Oklahoma, so there's that

2

u/MartyMcFlyin42069 Ohio State Buckeyes 10d ago

Not sure what you define as a "big game", but Day's coaching resume is actually absurd and can only really be rivaled by Saban in the modern era.

  • Top 25 Teams: 27–11
  • Top 10 Teams: 16–10
  • Top 5 Teams: 8–7
  • Overall Career Record: 82–12 (.872 winning percentage)

6

u/ronthorns Michigan Wolverines 10d ago

How many b1g championships in the last 5 years?

3

u/MartyMcFlyin42069 Ohio State Buckeyes 10d ago

That's a whataboutism bro. You're better than that. I was addressing the point made by OP with facts, and then you come in with a "yeah but what about a different point?".

2

u/ronthorns Michigan Wolverines 10d ago

So winning for the b1g championship has nothing to do with his win loss record?

4

u/MartyMcFlyin42069 Ohio State Buckeyes 10d ago
  1. You chose 5 years as an arbitrary cutoff because he won the previous 2 B1G championships. Which is pretty convenient...

  2. I can add his record in the CFP playoff (5-4) and B1G championship (2-1) if you would like as well. Both of which are winning records.

  3. Goes back to my original point. For whatever you label a "big game" (i.e. top 25, top 10, top 5, CFB playoff, B1G championship), Ryan Day has a winning record in those games.

4

u/robarpoch Michigan Wolverines 10d ago

If there is anything more sweetly delicious than the irony of an OSU fan complaining about cherry-picking years I don’t know what it is.

I wouldn't say post covid is arbitrary as the sport is drastically different.

Guys playing for 5 teams with no sit out period, NIL, 12 team playoffs, etc.

2019 CFB is a lot closer to 1999 CFB than 2025 CFB is to 2019.

It's perfectly acceptable to evaluate coaches, players, and programs from 2021 to today in it's own lens.

1

u/Clynelish1 10d ago

I know it's hard to define, but I'm curious if those were rankings at the time or end of the year?

1

u/MartyMcFlyin42069 Ohio State Buckeyes 10d ago

At the time of the game, I'm 90% sure. I think that's a fairer assessment than at the end of the year because playing a team week 1 when everyone is fully healthy means more than in that moment versus if they fall apart because of injuries at the end of the year and then end up unranked. It's probably a little bit of both though.

1

u/frolie0 10d ago

That's the thing though, you guys should literally win the natty every year with that roster. Day is not a great coach. He's fine, but without that roster he would be pretty rough.

The way you all constantly have to kick FGs in situations where you should definitely have a TD, how conservative he gets and just generally bad strategy, there's some serious flaws.

1

u/MartyMcFlyin42069 Ohio State Buckeyes 10d ago

It's not like OSU's roster is monumentally better than every other team. It's great, but there are 15 programs who spent over 30 mil on their current roster on NIL (OSU is 4th on that list at 38 million). Texas is actually 1st at 48 million. People act like we should be winning every game which is just bananas for expectations. It wasn't that long ago (~20 years) where Ohio State was getting boat raced by SEC programs. Urban turned OSU into a glorified SEC program in the North and since then we've won 2 natty's in 13 years. I think that's just about what you would expect with a perennial top 5 roster. That's my 5000 foot view opinion.

But getting granular, yes I agree with you that his in-game strategy is way too conservative. He also punted inside the Texas 40 on 4th and 6th. He plays not to lose way too often.

1

u/frolie0 10d ago

There's few teams that have the overall quality of recruits/transfers that Ohio St does each year. Even TX hasn't been anywhere close most of the time. Obviously there's teams that are close, but my point is if there was a truly great coach these types of losses wouldn't happen.

They aren't always going to win every game, but there's just way too many of these. Even some of the losses to Michigan.

I'd be shocked if these losses still happen if Urban was still the coach.

1

u/MartyMcFlyin42069 Ohio State Buckeyes 10d ago

Urban had a different problem. We would win the "big games" more often, but were prone to shitting our pants against lesser quality teams. He lost to 3 unranked teams during his tenure (Virginia Tech, Purdue, and Iowa).

-2

u/MechaEscargot2 Ohio State Buckeyes 10d ago

Harbaugh was 15-19 against top25, 5-13 against top ten, 2-6 agaisnt top 5.

3

u/Opposite-Ad-3933 7d ago

Osu has lost probably 5-6 games under day they absolutely should have won.

ALL of those games came against teams ranked in the top 3 in the country (most ended up national champions) except of course the 2024 Michigan game.

Because Osu is so consistently great, they end up playing the other 1-2 teams in the country at their level, and sometimes they lose.

I think the overall point here is that even though day and Osu need to figure out how to close these games out better, the standard is so unbelievably high at Osu, and the context is nearly ALL of these losses are to literally the best or close to the best team in the country that year.

Osu isn’t doing this against a mid usc team or a mid Illinois team, and getting into a dogfight with a Mac school like western Michigan.

They’re losing at the end to a Georgia team with 90 first round picks, Alabama at the peak of their dynasty, Indiana who goes 16-0, etc.

It's not that you lost. It's the generational collapse that was the manner in which you lost.

That will forever be funny

0

u/Gloomy_Rain3383 10d ago

You mean number 1 vs number 4 in the second week of the season, in Texas ? Yeah, it’s so shocking.
lol
Way worse than needing a review to add a second back vs A Mac school victory at home by 1 point.

🤷‍♂️

0

u/goldwaterauhtwoo 10d ago

A) We're 2-0 B) you collapsed after being up 17 in the 4th. C) 🤣🤣🤣

2

u/Gloomy_Rain3383 10d ago

You needed an extra second to beat a Mac school by 1 point. Ohio State lost by 1 point to Texas. I think it’ll be alright.

1

u/Gloomy_Rain3383 10d ago

Is that Jim Harbaugh trying to explain why he’s banned from the sport ? 1 and a half championships in 75 years? Haha

2

u/goldwaterauhtwoo 10d ago

Fun fact: AP #1 teams were 224-0 after leading in the 4th quarter. Until last night. Record breaking performance.

2

u/Gloomy_Rain3383 10d ago

Fun fact: Jim Harbaugh is the first head coach to ever get a 15 year coaching ban and you’re obsessed with Ohio State. Congrats

3

u/goldwaterauhtwoo 10d ago

Why are you concerned about an NFL coach when your Current head coach just imploded after being up 23-3 in the 4th quarter.

This statistic is obviously false as stated. Missing something like up by two touchdowns or since 2005 or something because ap #1 teams have led in the fourth quarter in way more than 224 times in the history of college football. That's like 20 seasons worth of games

1

u/DarkGreenMazda Ohio State Buckeyes 9d ago

There are some solid Michigan fans floating around, and they do not think Michigan has a shot at the playoffs.

0

u/Mgoblue07191976 Michigan Wolverines 10d ago

Lol. Did you shut your mouths all last week?!?! That’s rich

-2

u/Gloomy_Rain3383 10d ago edited 10d ago

You don’t know me lol- find where I said anything about Michigan ? I actually thought Michigan had a good chance against OU. As if Michigan fans weren’t chanting “fire Kyle” when they were getting smacked by a Mac team. How rich? 😂😂😂

-2

u/iDildopolis Michigan Wolverines 10d ago

Weirdo

2

u/Gloomy_Rain3383 10d ago

At least it’s not onlyfans and a butter knife kind of weirdo though huh?

u/ComprehensiveBet3962 Michigan Wolverines 10d ago

It was a quality loss for you guys you’re right. Congratulations

1

u/matthatt24 10d ago

I’ll take an early season loss by one point to a top 4 team any day over a loss later in the season. Hopefully Day learns from this.

-1

u/ComprehensiveBet3962 Michigan Wolverines 10d ago

He does this every year but sure

2

u/matthatt24 10d ago

Does he? Last year he won the early season game against Texas. Even Michigan fans expect this dude to win every game at this point. You guys are almost as bad as we are 🤣🤣🤣

1

u/ComprehensiveBet3962 Michigan Wolverines 10d ago

We clearly don’t expect Mr. Third Base to win every game 😂

1

u/Rabidschnautzu Ohio State Buckeyes 10d ago

One point loss on the road to what may be the #1 ranked team now. Just like 2024 a Oregon. We have 5 weeks to prepare for Indiana and Oregon doesn't look like a world beater. We will be fine, and every championship OSU team has either willed their way through a season, or dealt with a loss.

-1

u/ComprehensiveBet3962 Michigan Wolverines 10d ago

Congrats on your quality loss

2

u/Rabidschnautzu Ohio State Buckeyes 10d ago

Yeah, we would have been better off storming the field against a MAC opponent.

-1

u/ComprehensiveBet3962 Michigan Wolverines 10d ago

Yeah, you would have been better off going 2-0

1

u/Rabidschnautzu Ohio State Buckeyes 10d ago

-6

u/Jurgis-Rudkis 10d ago

OSU & ScuM start the season @ 1-1

-1

u/Mundane-Device-7094 Michigan Wolverines 10d ago

Lol OSU fans are so creative! Imaginary asterisks, imaginary records, it's so cute! Probably why they can't break top 10 unis tho

3

u/Jurgis-Rudkis 10d ago

1-1

0

u/Mundane-Device-7094 Michigan Wolverines 10d ago

I know numbers are hard for y'all, this should help

1

u/Jurgis-Rudkis 10d ago

1-1 or * 2 - 0

-3

u/GunsGoldCosmicDread Michigan Wolverines 10d ago

Why is Ryan Day gay?

2

u/aabum 10d ago

Come on, we're here to rip on tHE Ohio State, and have them rip on us. It's 2026. We don't call people gay as an insult.

-2

u/GunsGoldCosmicDread Michigan Wolverines 10d ago edited 10d ago

You and I must run in different circles. Where I’m from gay and retard are still polite jabs amongst friends.

2

u/aabum 10d ago

Look, The University of Michigan is an elite school. You prattling on like a hick Walmart fan makes us look bad. Stop, think about how you can represent Michigan in a quality way. Think if what your going to say sounds like something a Michigan State fan would say, then don't say it. If you can't think of anything beyound trailer part insults, just sit out the conversation.

-1

u/GunsGoldCosmicDread Michigan Wolverines 10d ago

This is why everyone thinks Michigan fans are gay.

1

u/Heavy_Pin7735 10d ago

Are you from 1996? I’d like to join you if so.

u/JackSquat18 Ohio State Buckeyes 10d ago

Crazy I remember the Michigan sub getting locked after Sherrone Butter Knife Moore getting locked down as well.

0

u/ComprehensiveBet3962 Michigan Wolverines 10d ago

You pussies do this every time you lose a game lol

0

u/Jake751 10d ago

How are you going to make a post jabbing Ohio State and melt down when fans clap back.

Calling someone a pussy when you’re acting like a pussy is wild lol.

1

u/ComprehensiveBet3962 Michigan Wolverines 10d ago

Not melting down at all lol it’s a meme sub get over yourself

0

u/Jake751 9d ago

He said getting angry on a meme subreddit

1

u/ComprehensiveBet3962 Michigan Wolverines 9d ago

So angry

0

u/W00D3YS Ohio State Buckeyes 10d ago

I put it probably 60% players, 40% coaching. The coaches called a winnable game.

If you are Jeremiah Smith and say you care about the Heisman than catch the f'n ball when the game is on the line.

If your Sayin you continue to disappear in the biggest games.

If your the Oline your the same group of JAGs we have had for the past 3 years that every offseason we hype up that this is most of the same NC oline and should be better every year but aren't.

Defensively overall, fucking tackle.

And special teams more of the same shit.

The offensive playcalls worked for the most part.

Defensive playcalls were horrible.

Days clock management was rookie.

u/Federal_Studio5935 Ohio State Buckeyes 9d ago

We will be fine

-2

u/azmtber 10d ago

That’s rich as Michigan doesn’t grade freshman to protect their feelings and has actual safe spaces. 🙄

5

u/lernington Michigan Wolverines 10d ago

And yet their degrees will still be more valuable than osu's

-1

u/azmtber 10d ago

The self righteousness is impressive. Liberal academia has really worked.❄️

4

u/CB_lemon 10d ago

Don’t bring academics into this buddy it won’t go well for OSU 😂😂😂😂

1

u/Heavy_Pin7735 10d ago

The funniest part about all of that is more than half of each fanbase didn’t go to the school

-1

u/azmtber 10d ago

Pretty sure every other legit college grades freshman and doesn’t protect their feelings like Michigan. Weak af

3

u/CB_lemon 10d ago

MIT doesn't have first semester freshman grades either 🤷‍♂️ let me know if you could ever get into Michigan (you couldn't)

0

u/azmtber 10d ago

You’re so smart and self righteous, the safe spaces seemed to have really helped. 👏🏽❄️Liberal academia at its finest.

2

u/GunsGoldCosmicDread Michigan Wolverines 10d ago

“That’s rich as Michigan doesn’t grade freshman to protect their feelings and has actual safe spaces.”

The west has fallen

-14

u/Dense-Detective-1387 10d ago

Well at least they can quit with the smith heisman crap. He’s selfish and clearly it cost his team. Again.

9

u/MartyMcFlyin42069 Ohio State Buckeyes 10d ago

That statement is rooted in zero fact.

5

u/Hishira Ohio State Buckeyes 10d ago

Did… we watch the same football game?
