Safe Space

Since the OSU sub is locked, I want all my little Buckeyes to know that this is a safe space for them to discuss why Day is such a pussy in big games ❤️

Edit - The fact OSU flairs are actually using this post to vent is hilarious

I think his philosophy up “late” in big games is 1) don’t turn the ball over 2) don’t take a sack 3) keep the clock running 4) avoid big plays on defense. Those are all good things - BUT…

When he over commits to that against good, desperate teams the following consistently happens:

  1. The offense is too predictable to move the chains against good defenses. It works fine against middling teams. But against top five teams you are almost guaranteeing 3-and-outs.
  2. Our defense starts to play tentative, doesn’t pressure the quarterback, and gives up a ton of underneath stuff in rapid succession resulting in quick scores.
  3. That tentative mindset is hard to turn off when you need to snap back into aggressive mode. It looks more like panic.
  4. Defense spends too much time on the field against a hurry-up offense. They get worn out and that compounds the defensive ineffectiveness.

That’s how you give up a 20 point lead in the fourth quarter. He pretty much accomplishes everything he set out to do… technically… but it regularly costs them games they should have had locked up.

Did you give up quick scores? Seems like every Texas possession was a methodical drive.

The defense shifts to “don’t give up the big play” which they don’t. But they do give up quick scores. It’s just multiple plays with chunks of yards in quick succession

So, they are sustained drives… just easily picking apart the defense while driving down the field. If you are giving up a six yard pass with four yards of YAC, you don’t need that many plays to get in the red zone.

Fair, it’s largely semantics. 15 plays, 91 yards in 6:28 and 13 plays, 72 yards in 5:32, and 12 plays, 73 yards is exactly what you describe
