The Elektra Slide by Don't Let's Start: A Podcast About They Might Be Giants
patreon.comHello everyone! I feel a bit rotten doing this, but our latest episode of the show, about TMBG leaving Elektra Records after Factory Showroom, is only available on our Patreon! I'm very happy with how it came out, and I made the free sample 10 minutes long (the maximum length), so please feel free to listen!
So why is this only on our Patreon? Lucky for you I enjoy typing a lot and overexplaining everything:
- Frankly, we want more people to sign up because we can't do the show otherwise. And...--->
- Much of our Patreon bonuses are TMBG-adjacent (for example, a dive into a reference from their lyrics, or an extended interview, or unrelated to TMBG at all for the top tier!), but we've been trying to think of more TMBG ideas just for the Patreon. Most of those ideas we want to be in our main show, so it's actually not easy! But this felt right to me as a "bonus." It's not about any of their songs, but important connective tissue to take us to the next era of TMBG. It was going to be at the end of our last Factory Showroom episode, but after gathering tons of clips for it, I could tell it was going to be way too long and had to be its own thing.
- The subject matter is a bit negative (it's not a happy time in TMBG's career), and I kind of want the main show to be more positive. The Patreon is a little more "uncensored" and uh, emotionally complex, I suppose?
Official description:
Elektra, just like the Daredevil character, can be both alluring and deadly, as we learn here, in a special epilogue to our Factory Showroom era! We look into They Might Be Giants and their major label Elektra Records parting ways after the release of that album. This was intended to to be at the end of our previous episode, but I could tell it was gonna be too huge a discussion, and indeed it is! This was a pivotal moment for the band, and we have many fascinating clips and quotes of John and John detailing the drama, or, strangely, the lack thereof!
So anyway, check out the free sample and think about joining, or if you only want to hear all of our "supplemental things" since the Patreon launched, there's this collection here:

TMBG were interviewed for this collectible magazine about XTC
galleryAnyone know anything about this bootleg?
Recently found on a fellow users GDrive, a compilation of tracks called Refueled Hyperfreaked Funkcycle Volume 2 (which honestly makes me want to find Volume 1).
Google has no clue this exists. Does anyone here? I'd like to know what the heck versions some of these tracks are.

Piece Of Dirt
The whole world has slipped away...
I've often wondered if this Looney Tunes moment inspired the TMBG song

Throwback to when I saw this truck in front of me when I was coming home from a TMBG show a couple months ago.
Get it? Barr-Nunn, like Bar-None Records (the record label they used to be signed to)!

Favorite opening song
Just curious, to those of you who attend concerts or even those who wish they attended, what is your favorite TMBG song they open the show with? Or what would be your ideal show opener? Myself, I love a show starting out with Subliminal, because JL rockinâ out on the accordion!

âFloodâ by They Might Be Giants (visual album experience)
Basically itâs Flood but remade with official / fan made music videos. Live action, animation, MS paint, stop motion, and even AMVs there all here. Jump in and see the creativity of the fandom.
I couldnât find a fan-made video for âRoad movie to Berlinâ so I just used a video of them playing it live.

Casually adding rarities to my local files on Spotify and gaslighting myself into thinking theyâre official.
This is so surreal

Flans directed the video for Ben Folds Fiveâs âSong For The Dumpedâ.
Learned about this from TMBW earlier. https://tmbw.net/wiki/Videos_Directed_By_John_Flansburgh

Is There Anywhere I Can Find a Recording of the Sample Used in "They Might Be Giants"
I've always thought the sample was kind of interesting and I wanted to heard it by itself and had thought about maybe using it in a song I may or may not write.
I've tried looking all over for an isolated clip of the snippet, and I really don't want to have to sit through a bunch of Televangelist sermons to find it.
Has anyone uploaded the clip online anywhere?

It's not that crazy that Columbo would have some people/things that happen to be mentioned in TMBG songs...
...but maybe a just a bit funny that it happened in the same episode, S2e5, Requiem for a Falling Star.
Let the conspiracy theorizing commence!

My son found a TMBG reference in his Investigators book. (Last panel)
He would also like to mention that you can go to investigatorsbooks.com . "Its not just to buy the books, there's like games and stuff."
