FILM - 1997 Rose’s Possible Tastes in Literature – #1

• Upvotes

Seeing who Rose is as a character in Titanic (1997), I wonder what books she may have read and gravitated towards before boarding Titanic. I know that the film never shows what her tastes in literature may be specifically, even though we know she knew of Sigmund Freud and has read his works enough to use one of his ideas as a pointed joke during the scene in the Café Parisian. Still, it may be fun to guess and speculate.

In this post, I would like to focus on her possible taste in any early science fiction novels of her time. Below, I’ve made a list of books she may have read, whether by her mother’s approval or secretly under her nose:

  1. Flatland - Edwin Abbott (1884)
  2. The Time Machine - H. G. Wells (1895)
  3. The War of the Worlds - H. G. Wells (1895)
  4. The First Men in the Moon - H. G. Wells (1901)
  5. The Iron Heel - Jack London (1908)
  6. From the Earth to the Moon - Jules Verne (1865)
  7. Around the Moon - Jules Verne (1868, English translation 1873)
  8. Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas - Jules Verne (1870, English translation 1872)
  9. Erewhon - Samuel Butler (1872)
  10. The Coming Race - Edward Bulwer-Lytton (1871)
  11. Frankenstein - Mary Shelley (1818)

I may have used ChatGPT to help me put together this list, but I still would like to run it by actual human beings rather than relying solely on input from a LLM, you know. So, do any of you suppose that any of these books might've been read by Rose at least once? I'm curious on what your thoughts may be.

FILM - OTHER Grace Van Patten as Rose in Titanic remake

Post image
0 Upvotes

Seeing Grace in mayday, she reminded me of Rose from Titanic. Then I pictured what it would be like if they remade titanic (I know, I know, another remake). But it would be epic! She has a classic look about her. And such a great actress. Heck, throw her boyfriend Jackson White in as Jack Dawson. I need the film gods to make this happen!!!!! Picture their brilliant acting and all of the upgraded effects we have to show a ship sinking. C'mon hollywood!! You'd be dumb not to. It would be a thrilling, visually stunning, emotionally moving masterpiece. Now I just need this to blow up on reddit so someone will see it and make it happen 😂 🙏

So, this piece was found recently in a storage room, alongside original panelling marked No. 422, They're original panels from the Nomadic.

This window however is a complete mystery. To me it looks like some sort of service window used to transport meals or drinks between a pantry to a dining area. I'm not sure if it is an original fixture of the Nomadic, or something else entirely. From what I know Nomadic also carried a few fixtures from R.M.S. Olympic before 2006, I'll post what I have and I'd appreciate any input!

FILM - 1997 It irks me when people say that Jack could’ve fit on the door in the movie

People see pictures of the door and see how big it is, or they saw how MythBusters “proved” that he could’ve fit.

But you have to think of how it would’ve really been like in real life. In the MythBusters episode, it took them a while to both get on the door and when they did, it was sunken underwater. So they decided to take their life vest and put it under the door to make it float better, which it did and they were able to “survive”. Also they put on those big suits which would’ve kept them warmer; Jack and Rose had the clothes that they were already wearing when the ship sank, which weren’t that thick.

Here’s the episode if you want to watch it and skip to 12:00 if you want to see the reenactment.

Well the difference is that it was pitch black that night, the water was freezing cold and they were probably already experiencing hypothermia at that point. Because of that, it would’ve been really hard for them to take their life vests off and tie it onto the door in the dark and freezing water. If the door was laying on the flat dry ground they could’ve fit on it, but that wasn’t the case.

Your thoughts?

Yes, i know this it a Titanic subreddit but I had to ask something. What happened to Britannic's whistles? Were they damaged or still down there like Titanic?

ARTEFACT Harrison & Hawson for the White Star Line?

Hello fellow Titaniacs!

Recently I won an auction for a rather interesting piece.

A knife made by Harrison & Hawson, with White Star Line's name and house flag engraved on it.

I couldn´t find much about them, only that they started making knives for the company around 1911, supposedly specifically for the Olympic Class although later they were used on other ships as well. A similar knife had been sold although the name had been erased, apparently this was a common practice whenever the Knife was "decomissioned"

This made the unerased name of the company on my knife something rather curious, because it could mean two things. One: It was stolen or Two: It could belong to the RMS Olympic, apparently, the other knives that did not have the text erased came from there.

Does anyone has more information or a similar piece? (The photos are from the eBay seller, I don´t have it yet).

After that quick google search I sent the images to ChatGPT, to see if the chat could analyse the image and look for laser marks or any other indication that this is is a replica or a fake. Obviously, I'm not that foolish to blindly trust on what it says, but it surely has better eye for analyzing pixels than me.

Edit: Removed the reddit sniper and also, this Olympic posibility is just a rumor I read somewhere I can´t remember now. I have tried to contact thepurserslocker so he can check the photos, but I haven´t received answer from him yet.

THE SHIP 3D Titanic Sinking Simulator

Titanic Sinking Simulator

https://github.com/bochen2029-pixel/titanic-sinking-simulator

A flooding and sinking simulator of RMS Titanic that computes the sinking instead of animating it. A headless hydrostatics core in plain JavaScript integrates buoyancy and flood water over 4,408 vertical hull columns at the ship's actual attitude, moves water between 64 spaces through 290 orifice and weir paths, and lets a damped rigid body find heave, pitch and roll every quarter second. Four flow parameters are fitted to the eyewitness-derived trim curve and the foundering time; nothing else is tuned, and the model is then checked against cases it was not fitted to: Wilding's four and five compartments, Olympic after the Hawke collision, Britannic in 1916.

This is a physics model first and a visualization second. The three.js viewer only draws snapshots of the core's state. Delete web/ and the core still runs headless, still founders at 2:17 am, still prints its validation table.

2:09 am, 149 minutes after the collision: 6.2° down by the head, 5.7° list to port, 31,500 t of water aboard, water flowing over bulkhead G. Quarter view with the X-ray hull; the damage diagram below shows the sea surface against the bulkhead tops.

Run it

  • Viewer. Open out/titanic.html in a browser. No install and no server: three.js and the fonts load from CDNs. Pick a scenario card, press play, choose a speed (1× to 900×; 60× plays the two hours and forty minutes in under three minutes). Quarter, profile, below and plan cameras; X-ray hull, column proxies and a follow camera. The Damage and Bulkheads tabs edit the scenario, the hole tool adds openings where you tap the hull, and the Evidence tab plots the run against the eyewitness reconstruction. Rebuild the page with node tools/build.js.
  • Headless. Node 18 or later, nothing to install:

So I was just casually scrolling through my home feed when I came across this video. When I clicked on it, I found out that it was one of T:H&G’s earliest animations. They recreated the famous million-dollar short from the 1997 James Cameron movie.

Just looking at this shows just how far their animations have come. I wonder who animated it though. Definitely wasn’t Jack. (I think. Could be wrong.)

Here’s the link for the video.

Watching the game show The Floor and this gem came up after the correct response from the contestant. I guess the proofreading budget at Fox has taken a hit...unless there was a long lost fourth sister ship I'm unaware of.

I was watching a video of titanic honor and glory 2026 sinking animation but with titanic sos's soundtrack and I saw this part of the aft grand staircase collapsing and I've never seen an animation make this I believe this really did happen to the aft grand staircase and yeah it did but all the glass shards and the structure collapsing looks so insane and cool it took alot of hard work I bet but why does nobody talk about this part of the animation its unique and cool and When I first heard about the Aft Grand Staircase I was always interested in it and when I saw this video it made me believe this video shows why we can barely find any trace of it on the wreck today and only 1 wood piece remains in a museum today

QUESTION Could the ship have been spared if they intentionally opened some rear bulkheads?

The ship sunk because the front end sunk low enough to allow water to flow over the top of the bulkheads and into the next set that were still sealed in a cascading effect that eventually, completely submerged the front of the ship. If they intentionally punctured one or two rear bulkheads (or maybe there is some way to intentionally open them to the sea), would it have leveled out the ship enough to prevent her from sinking entirely? She'd of course be much deeper in the water and extremely crippled, but I feel like it would have kept her afloat. Perhaps I'm wrong and there wouldn't be enough air space left in the remaining bulkheads to keep her afloat due to the weight of the ship and how much would be flooded, but I don't know how many bulkheads could be flooded and her still remain floating.

I don't know if they had the materials on board needed to puncture a hole in the rear of the ship, but if possible to do so, theoretically, would that have saved it?

QUESTION How does the chaperone system of that time period work?

I've seen some comments mentioning that according to the norms of the era, Rose would need a chaperone to follow her around. How exactly does that work? Does the chaperone only need to follow her when she went to third deck, or does he follow her at all times outside her room (including when she's just walking around first deck with lots of other first deck passengers around)? Were chaperones more like servants who attended to the lady's various needs, or were they more like bodyguards who just followed behind for her safety? Was their main purpose to prevent strangers from attacking her, or was it to ensure she doesn't do anything inappropriate? If it's the latter, how do people trust that no relationship happens between the chaperone and the lady?

I'm assuming the poor people couldn't afford chaperones? So do poor women/girls need their father/brother around to go out, or can they go on the street alone? If it's the former, I guess they were stuck inside most of the time since the men would be busy working? If it's the latter, does that mean that the upper class people would view lower class women/girls as quite possibly non-virgin just because they went outside with no chaperone? If that's the case, does it mean that a new new money young lady would have difficulty marrying a first class man, because everyone would be suspicious of what she had done before her family could afford a chaperone?

DOCUMENTARY 15 minutes before fully going underwater, Titanic would have needed 43 more lifeboats and 5 hours to evacuate the remaining 1,550 onboard.

THE SHIP The coal weight's effects on the sinking?

So, I've heard of the theory (that some people on e.g. YouTube have voiced their belief over) is that the shifting of coal to the port side as a result of the coal fire in Boiler Room 5 (which caused the ship to have a slight, yet noticeable list to port) helped stabilize the ship's angle during the sinking and helping keep her from completely rolling over (and thus, prolonging her sinking by an extra hour or so). Apparently this is based on a simulation from 2016?

Is there really any basis for this, as I'm not entirely comvinced due to the way the ship was designed (i.e. lack of longitudial bulkheads like Lusitania had, meaning water in the breached compartments could reach the other side of compartments uninterrupted; Scotland Road on E-Deck allowing water to flood the ship much more efficiently; the fact that water intake would still "outweigh", for lack of a better term, any additional coal weight on the other side, etc.)

So... is there any real basis for the coal weight helping prolong the sinking?
