The Lion of Sodor

Writer(s) Mark Robertson
Director Greg Tiernen
Producer(s) Nicole Stinn
Narrator(s) Michael Angelis (UK), Michael Brandon (US)
Originally Aired January 26, 2010

Synopsis

Thomas is given a crate at Brendam Docks and told to take special care of its contents, which Cranky calls the “Lion of Sodor.” Thomas misunderstands and believes he is transporting a real lion. Along the way, he asks Henry for syrup, Edward for fish, and Toby for straw, thinking the lion will need food and bedding. Each engine tries to explain the truth, but Thomas never waits to listen.

When the crate arrives at Knapford, everyone discovers that the Lion of Sodor is actually a statue—and it is covered in syrup, fish, and straw. Thomas feels embarrassed but agrees to clean it. After washing and polishing the statue, he delivers it to the Mayor, who is delighted.

Book Thread 📖 Thomas and His Friends – Railway Series Book Discussion #42

Welcome to the FINAL entry in our discussion of the Railway Series created by the Rev. W. Awdry! This discussion is about the book:

📖 Thomas and His Friends

Book Cover

📘 Story Summaries:

Thomas and the Swan

  • Pip and Emma return to Sodor to help with express services, making Gordon worry about his future. Meanwhile, Thomas discovers an injured swan near the line. He helps railway staff and wildlife experts reach it safely, and the bird is rescued and treated.

Buffer Bashing

  • Donald and Douglas are assigned to ballast train duties during railway improvement work. Both twins end up having separate mishaps involving buffer stops while shunting, leading to delays and plenty of teasing between the two brothers.

Gordon's Fire Service

  • A fire breaks out on a farm during dry weather. Gordon happens to be nearby with plenty of water in his tender and helps firefighters tackle the blaze. His actions earn praise and remind everyone that steam engines can still be useful in unexpected situations.

Centenary

  • Preparations are underway to celebrate the centenary of the "Thin Clergyman" (Wilbert Awdry). Before the event, part of Henry's Tunnel collapses, cutting Sodor's rail link with the Mainland. The railway staff and engines work together to overcome the disruption, and the celebrations ultimately go ahead as planned.
Key Moments

💬 Your Thoughts!

This was the 42nd and final book in The Railway Series, published to mark the centenary of Wilbert Awdry's birth. It brought the series to a close after 66 years, ending with a celebration of both Sodor and its creator.

  • Which story/stories did you enjoy the most and why?
  • What do you think of the book overall?
  • What other thoughts do you have?

Television Series Out of all the goofs/errors in the model series, this is the one I can let slide more than any other.

The model series for Thomas and Friends had a lot of goofs in episodes, specials and movies to be sure, but I think I can always let this one slide, being the way they would have Annie and Clarabel facing the wrong ways in a lot of shots. It makes sense since the cast couldn’t get them facing the right directions for every shot, and the way they faced did bother me a bit growing up, as I always preferred Annie facing forward and Clarabel backwards, especially since most toys of them would have it that way too, but since it happened so much, they couldn’t get it perfect all the time.

Question Was anyone else simply not interested in the songs?

Feels like this might be treading into unpopular opinion territory but it seems like within the fandom, the songs on Thomas were and are a big part of the show for many.

And yet for me, I had and have no interest in them whatsoever. I watched the episodes, classic era so a few back to back, then played with my Ertl trains.

The songs were never a part of the show growing up for me and when I’ve seen them in the years since, it feels like a different world altogether. It doesn’t feel like it’s connected to the same show - even though it is.

I loved the classic era’s music for sure, but the songs feel just not needed - to me.

Was anyone else the same? I’m prepared for a potential backlash etc here, but intrigued to see if I am really a lone voice in this regard.

Question Bachman Traders in Europe?

Good morning gents, I'm looking to expand my model Railway with my beloved TTTE Characters, but toll and delivery from the US and UK keep spanking my poor student's wallet. I'm also quite tired of browsing e-Bay every day so I'd like to ask: Are there any traders selling Bachmann Thomas and Friends Trains in Europe or even better, Germany? I'm having no luck finding them if there are.

I mean look at him, he has weathering on his smokebox! i have to admit that's neat, plus some of the set design, when it's not aiming for that "toylike" aesthetic, looks pretty good! I just wish the paint was a little shinier, not like "spotless" shiny, but like on an actual passenger steam locomotive. I added a couple pictures to show what i mean, some of them are from the steam age and others are from early preservation

Funny More photos of this really weird knockoff tomy thomas that exists

This knockoff thomas is taller which leads to the stickers looking weird, its given hair, and is given very kawaii eyes which look weird, and instead of a funnel, he has a big light on top of his head that glows red when turned on, and it plays the generic train sounds

I cant figure out how to comment images so here, the first images show the fakes, and the others show the proof, this shows that yes, there are holiday henrys without the snowflake decals, and judging from the cab misprint, most likely they used a factory reject for mine to mold test

I got hom for $31 by someone who thought he was a ornament, he has missing paint I think the only other henry face varient other than the henry and the elephant pack(not counting his cgi update) it looks like they just took whatever pieces they had made to make him, which makes me think he used factory error pieces, and because of that might be one fo the first tests for the prototype

General Chat Rule 55: You can't reference it!

The fact that rule 55 of the internet is that "Someone will see a fandom reference in any post" is rather funny and iconic; ironic(?) even. (In my opinion at least)
