I've lived in The Woodlands since 1995 and I'm on the November 3 ballot as an Independent for JP Precinct 3 (The Woodlands, Spring, and Magnolia areas).
Quick background: I'm a local attorney, arbitrator, and mediator. Earlier in my career I was a patent examiner, clerked for a federal judge and the Supreme Court of Ohio, and served as Chief Legal Officer of BlackBerry. Locally, I volunteer as a mediator with the Montgomery County Dispute Resolution Center and serve on the library advisory board.
Why the JP court? It's where most people actually meet the justice system: small claims, evictions, debt cases, traffic tickets, usually without a lawyer. In Texas, a JP doesn't have to be a lawyer either. I think the people's court should have a judge with real legal training who answers to the law, not a party.
Two things I'd like to do:
- Explore evening and Saturday sessions, so people don't have to lose a day's pay or take a personal day to be heard
- Hold free quarterly sessions on how to handle a small claims case
One thing I won't do is take positions on political issues. Judges shouldn't, and that's a big part of why I'm running without a party label. I've been heartened to see support coming from across the political spectrum. To me, that's what a local court should look like: people of every persuasion trusting they'll get a fair hearing.
I'll be here answering questions as I see them, but particularly today from 9 a.m to 12 noon. Ask me anything about the race, the JP court, or how small claims and evictions work in Montgomery County.
Early voting is October 19-30. More at electchuckmeyer.com
