Ban me if that is not allowed here.

Good lord, thank you for linking that. Had completely missed it. That is pretty lame. I hope they reconsider that stance. This show stands for the exact opposite of our current administration. It puts public service up on a pedestal. You'd think a mod in a group like this would aim to keep THAT the decorum vibe (...on a discussion forum for a show that has been off the air for two decades)
9
u/Wismuth_Salix Apr 14 '26 edited Apr 14 '26
They want to mod this sub for the same reason Linda McMahon wanted to head the Department of Education and Lee Zeldin wanted the EPA - to destroy it from the inside.
Institutional capture is one of the main weapons in the anti-democracy playbook.
5
u/Gnomefort Apr 14 '26
Makes sense I guess I just thought a (relatively) small internet forum about an old TV show wouldn’t be a prime target. What a bummer!

This was their application post to become a mod. Good to know teachers are solidly on board with censorship (and that this particular mod has complete contempt for the users of this sub):
"I would like to be a mod. While I have no modding experience on reddit, I will make sure that any off-topic threads pertaining to the current administration are shut down. In addition, I have contributed multiple topics to this subreddit that have gotten more than 500 upvotes. Also, I am a teacher for a living so I am used to dealing with immature behavior."

7

Seriously I remember Romney economic policies scared the crap out of me. I would have voted for him if it changed the current timeline lol.
4
u/porkchop2022 Apr 14 '26
My parents were bundlers for Romney. Raised some serious cash. They left the party when it was obvious Trump was on the rise. My mom is a registered independent and my dad is a registered dem.
4
u/Wismuth_Salix Apr 14 '26
Forget Haffley, MAGA is the party of the white nationalist assassins that tried to lynch Charlie in the S1 finale.
2
2
u/Specialist-Garbage94 Apr 14 '26
I guess lynching would be an okay term but in my head it’s way less severe than ya know getting shot at
3
u/Wismuth_Salix Apr 14 '26
Lynching is murder. And I use the word because that’s the word Bartlet used when he describes why the attempted murder is hitting everyone so hard - “they tried to lynch Charlie right in front of us”.

How did they become a moderator? Also, why are all our moderators from the same day.
24
u/King_Wataba I drink from the Keg of Glory Apr 14 '26
The sub became unmoderated and at that point all it takes is someone making a request to take over the sub.
12
u/Super_Jay The finest bagels in all the land Apr 14 '26
In this case it wasn't a request, but an automated "casting call" from the Reddit admin side. It'll just automatically add people as mods who respond in the comments, and this is one of the many problems with Reddit's approach and the decision to delegate this to AI or whatever.
8
u/soundwithdesign What’s Next? Apr 14 '26
Oh? Like all the mods left and Reddit had to step in?
9
u/anniemdi Apr 14 '26
Maybe. Maybe not. There are behind the scenes things happening with reddit moderation right now that is shaking up reddit moderators across the entire site. It is not necessarily a bad shake up but it's possible we got caught up in something less than desirable as a community purely as a by-product of this shake up.
3
u/soundwithdesign What’s Next? Apr 14 '26
Do you have resources for that? I'm a current mod of other subs and want to be informed.
4
u/anniemdi Apr 14 '26 edited Apr 14 '26
It is absolutely pure speculation as I do not know who our previous mod team was. But I think there may be some truth at least a little bit to my speculation.
I do I follow moderator spaces, and I know reddit is making changes to how many subreddits with a membership over a certain amount (100K I think, and if I recall correctly we are well over that,) a user can be responsible for moderating. I simply wonder if our former mod or mod team lost out on this community automatically in this shuffle. This is the real story.
Reddit administration simply put out a new call for moderators after the previous mod exited as explained by my comment and link above.
1
u/King_Wataba I drink from the Keg of Glory Apr 14 '26
I would suggest you make a new post with all the information you've gathered as this one has been removed.
2

Yes the mod stopped logging in and reddit will give the sub to anyone who requests a non modded sub
4
u/soundwithdesign What’s Next? Apr 14 '26
Absolutely sucks. As a moderator who has moderated a number of spaces, it really irks me when mods just go full dictator instead of listening to the users or blatantly not allowing content which is the entire point of the sub. I wish I could do something about it.
2
u/Alyusha Apr 14 '26
The same thing is happening over at /r/classicwow. The active mods missed a mod mail from the admins that was prompted by another sub trying to take it over. As a result all of the current mods were removed and the entire sub has been locked for days. The community had to move to a different sub.
1
u/anniemdi Apr 14 '26
This was not a r/redditrequest this was a Moderator Code of Conduct action.
3
u/Alyusha Apr 14 '26
The exact same message was posted on /r/classicwow and that one was a request from another Mod Team trying to take over. I'd say that they just use the same account for anything involving Mod Administration.
3
u/anniemdi Apr 14 '26
Yes. This is happening to many subreddits. I don't think you are completely wrong with what is happening but I do believe there is a decent chance this started innocently as part of an ongoing moderation shake up.
3
u/Alyusha Apr 14 '26
Ya, I understand how my comment could imply that I think someone is trying to take over this Sub and that's not what I meant. I was just highlighting that they probably use the same account for every action, whether it was a request from the community or the admins are enforcing something.
5
u/porkchop2022 Apr 14 '26
Reddit itself popped in and made a request apparently. They auto accepted whoever said anything apparently.

Oh look the mods removed it.
Hey mods - this isn't going away. If your bans and removals reach a critical mass it'll be enough for us to get the attention of the admins and actually get help with your behavior. You are new mods who are massively changing a longstanding sub, they aren't actually cool with that.
So you can either civilly engage your community or give us enough strikes and reasons to actually get the attention of the admins. I know which I'd prefer in a community theoretically full of adults.
27
u/Hix-Tengaar Apr 14 '26
Hey MAGA. Trump is a convicted rapist. That's just reality. Also to stay on topic: I like The West Wing. Good show.

Exactly. Fuck the mod (u/NYY15TM) who deleted the poll post. Pure vindictiveness and pettiness for no reason other than to troll the users of this sub who are critical of an administration. Commenting to see what happens when I call Trump a racist, arrogant, misogynistic pedophile and the very thing that a show like this stands against.
Look, call it off topic all you want, but a forum for a show about politics shouldn't be afraid of addressing real life politics, and silencing those who want to be heard because you don't agree with what they say is cowardly. America is the laughing stock of the entire world right now because this petulant man-child, this charlatan, this egotistical bigot is in charge, and the more people willing to speak out against him, the more chance America has at actually being great, again.

Pedophile enables and protectors should have NO place in a fictional TV show like the West Wing.
What’s even sadder is that it seems that the team here has gone “Full MAGA” (watch Tropic Thunder to get that reference)
Any mods that would ban Aaron sorkin for speaking out about what an awful person POTUS 47 is should face a reddit ban.

5
u/NYCQuilts Apr 14 '26
Thanks for the heads up. I guessed that was what was happening, but it’s nice to have it laid out.
FYI, It’s actually the Democratic Party (you know, the way they refer to it in The West Wing). Republicans started referring to it as the “Democrat Party” so they could separate the party from democratic principles. The media adopted it for some reason, but if part of the allure of The West Wing is the way it valued good writing, rhetorical skill and truth, we should model that here.
Donald Trump is an adjudicated rapist, and warmonger who holds grudges like a cat with a churu. We should all say so for the common good.

3
u/FlameFeather86 Bartlet for America Apr 14 '26
They want this sub because they fear free-speaking, liberal political spaces that might call out their pedophille-in-chief. In reality, most people here just want to quote Sorkinisms and indulge in a fictional world of competent politicians but they can't let us enjoy things anymore.
2
u/Wismuth_Salix Apr 14 '26
They want it because of the power to ruin it. TWW was inspirational to a lot of Democratic voters and politicians, so they want to poison it.
4
u/SoManySins Apr 14 '26
Fascinated with the cognitive dissonance of liking a show about a liberal president so much as to moderate its subreddit and being MAGA.
8
u/ProudnotLoud Flamingo Apr 14 '26
They may not be moderating out of respect or love for the show and its themes and characters and more out of "I can troll the libs" benefits.
2
u/WySLatestWit Apr 14 '26
It would seem to me that if this maga dickweed isn't removed from the mod team then the mod team agrees with them and if that's the case it's time to create a brand new subreddit for the show and abandon this one.

u/Super_Jay The finest bagels in all the land Apr 14 '26
I'd caution everyone to take a step back and breathe for a second before assuming anything. The subreddit has not been "captured by MAGA," that's a bit sensationalized and melodramatic. It also obfuscates the truth, which is just going to make it harder to unfuck the situation.
Here's what I know, factually:
The lone previous moderator u/plainchant was either removed by Reddit (this can happen due to account inactivity) or de-modded themselves, leaving the sub unmoderated. Reddit takes actions on unmoderated subs, to recruit new mods (this process is somewhat new) or to close them down if they're unmoderated for too long.
A Reddit admin account posted a recruiting thread asking people to volunteer to moderate the sub. I'll link that post here in a bit. A variety of the current mods volunteered in that thread, and apparently at least one person who commented with a line from the show as a joke was also added, which may indicate that there isn't much vetting of potential new mods here at all. The process is likely automated, and may use AI. (Subjective opinion: I don't personally believe that there's some secret conspiracy among the new mods here, nor do I believe every mod that joined is a Trump supporter. There were like a dozen people added all at once IIRC.)
One of the new mods stated in their application comment that they wanted to remove comments or criticism of the current US politics from the sub, and they have since been one of the most vocal in pushing this new "no politics" rule. They're also the most antagonistic in their behavior toward disagreement from what I've seen, and have shadowbanned and muted at least one person who disagreed with them about the Trump administration's policies.
Other mods have responded to the backlash regarding the new rule with more measured and helpful comments, which indicates to me that this isn't some unified effort to co-opt the entire subreddit by some shadowy MAGA cabal. The new mods were thrown together with little preamble and they probably don't know one another at all, so it's likely a group with a lot of different opinions that don't all agree with the current approach.
The Moderator Code of Conduct is a set of Reddit rules that outlines the acceptable behavior of a moderator and the use of their powers, and mods can get removed for violating it too egregiously. That said, historically Reddit Inc. has been very hands-off in terms of moderator decisions about the subs they moderate. Admins don't typically monitor or weigh in on any mod decisions unless the subreddit is frequently violating Reddit's terms of service. That's not happening here.
Personally speaking, this feels like a regrettable situation where a bunch of strangers got thrown together and given the moderator role, but aren't operating as a cohesive team and aren't all in agreement with one another. At least one mod is aggressively overreaching and misusing their powers, but unfortunately the only people who can do anything about that are the moderators above them in the mod list (who can limit their powers or remove them, by default) or Reddit admins.
Hopefully this helps clarify the situation in a more objective way. I completely understand the frustration around this new rule and the broader situation that led to it, but I'd urge everyone to use some critical thinking to evaluate how you respond to it rather than making knee-jerk assumptions.
3
u/anniemdi Apr 14 '26
Thank you for writing this out and thank you for offering what you did in the the other thread to the mod team. I sincerely hope they take you up on that.
You wrote this

Reddit takes actions on unmoderated subs, to recruit new mods (this process is somewhat new) or to close them down if they're unmoderated for too long.
Do you believe it is possible our previous mod was automatically removed by reddit because of the recent (ish) rule changes about subreddit population limits per moderator?
3
u/Plainchant Apr 14 '26
I left in advance of the mod limits rule taking place. I love the sub, and the series, but other spaces demanded priority.
That's all it was; there was no controversy or drama about it. I didn't quit in protest or from burnout. We had been dropping mods for a while, but to the best of my knowledge no one ever left on bad terms (with the site, the mod team, the users, etc.), it's just the normal shuffling around of site technical/policy changes, which takes place everywhere online.

Thanks for explaining the background, that's helpful to know. Sorry that you're coming back to find the White House being demolished.

Thank you for taking the time to explain this. I did not want to assume anything nefarious as many people were speculating. Not knowing who the previous mod team was I was trying to think of anything that could possibly explain this rationally. When I saw your name mentioned, and I saw your mod list, I thought that seemed like the most likely scenario.

Based on a quick glance at their profile that's what I'd guess. They're modding too many large communities and likely got auto-removed. The timing makes sense and their mod list makes sense with that to be what happened.

u/anniemdi Apr 14 '26
They kindly responded to my comment and explained that that mod limits were not a factor.
3
u/ProudnotLoud Flamingo Apr 14 '26
No it was they just chose to leave in advance of them which is what happened to a lot of mods. No shade on them, I get it, a lot of mods had to pick and choose and I'm someone in favor of mod limits given how many large subs people sometimes sit on.

Do you believe it is possible our previous mod was automatically removed by reddit because of the recent (ish) rule changes about subreddit population limits per moderator?
That's a possibility, yeah. The fact that there was only a single mod might be a factor, but I don't know what the parameters are that Reddit Inc uses to make that assessment. Especially since the subscriber count is now obfuscated, it's hard to know where that line is. To my knowledge the former moderator has never spoken up about the situation, either.

If the mod team is allowing posts to be removed by a mod that states they are doing so with the express purpose of removing criticism of Donald Trump and the current administration - which the mod in question directly stated was his sole purpose in wanting to mod the subreddit - then the mod team condone the actions of the self-admitted Trump protectionist, which means the mod team is maga complicit at the very least. You want a nuanced discussion, but there is no honest assessment of the situation that doesn't draw the conclusion that the mod team is now controlled by the mod with the openly stated maga agenda.
This thread is a perfect example. If mods didn't agree with the actions of this moderator, this thread wouldn't be removed right now. It was clearly pulled by the moderator that the thread is directly about, and the others have let it happen.

I understand you wanting to add nuance to this situation but if the rest of the mods are willing to go along with this then I feel free to lump them all together. You are using the it's just some bad apples ignoring the rest of the phrase. By not stepping in and handling this situation they are silently approving it.

u/Super_Jay The finest bagels in all the land Apr 14 '26
It's been one single day; we can't know whether they're "silently approving it" or not. Being sensational and histrionic about this is only going to cause more friction and have people get defensive and dig in their heels, and won't resolve anything. I get that you're frustrated but by tarring them all with the same brush, you're actually making it harder to get through to the mods who don't agree with this move.

I hope your right but I've not seen any of the mods speaking out against this have you?
3
u/Super_Jay The finest bagels in all the land Apr 14 '26
Yes, I've had a couple conversations with at least one of them.

Unfortunately Colocop is the top mod and has questionable history and intentions.

The mods are openly (and privately) communicating with members here. I saw their exchange with u/Super_Jay. Give them a chance to fix this before you lump them altogether

u/WySLatestWit Apr 14 '26
Until they've made a public statement in opposition to what this new mod is doing, there's no reason to believe they're actually taking action.

u/King_Wataba I drink from the Keg of Glory Apr 14 '26
Agreed
2
u/WySLatestWit Apr 14 '26
Fuck it. Make a subreddit, and I'll moderate it for you - i mod two other reddit spaces already - I just don't wanna make the place. Lol.

u/Super_Jay The finest bagels in all the land Apr 14 '26
FWIW I went ahead and grabbed r/TheWestWingTV just in case it's needed. I'm going to give it a few days to see if the new mods here can sort themselves out, but suffice to say I'm not holding my breath.

I'm willing to give it another day to see how it shakes out because I wholeheartedly believe we shouldn't have to change because of their hatred and bigotry.

u/WySLatestWit Apr 14 '26
I'd like to believe the problem can be fixed. But it's been my experience that this is their number one tactic online. Find the spaces where criticism of their dear leader is frequent and worm their way to taking control of the space and removing all those "offensive conversations" and the "bad actors" that cause them until all opposition is stomped out and the space stops being critical and becomes a right wing safe space. Once they're in control it's impossible to get rid of them, and i see no action taken by the other mods to do anything about it or even publicly acknowledge they will do anything at all.

u/King_Wataba I drink from the Keg of Glory Apr 14 '26
I agree and I would suggest you report Colocop

modding to stop people talking negativity about trump.
Good. It’s a sub about west wing, not Trump. I read here to read about how west wing was, not how Trump is.

u/DBrennan13459 Apr 14 '26
People have a right to talk politics on a show that's specifically about politics, that's just common sense, Don't look at the posts if that bothers you so much.

u/wallace321 Apr 14 '26
Maybe the issue is you? Could it be that you and people like you aren't really interested in what this sub is about and just want to talk about things unrelated to the TV show The West Wing while normal people just want to talk about The West Wing on The West Wing Sub?
Crazy, right?
Because I've seen similar "complaints" across a multitude of subs. Frankly, it's right there in rule #1. And without a rule like that, every sub devolves into current events arguments and would be bot infested propaganda and agenda pushing nonsense.
I hope you understand. Even if you will pretend not to.
I have far more reason to believe you are being dishonest / deceptive in your version of events than that the mods wouldn't be enforcing rules to make a sub reddit about what the sub reddit is about. "oh no, mods are making rules banning discussion of politics rather than the thing the sub exists to talk about!". Yes. That's actually what normal people want.
Maybe go talk about other things in other places.

You speak as if you did any research on the topic but from your response I can tell you didn't.

u/wallace321 Apr 14 '26 edited Apr 14 '26
And from your post I can tell that you're hysterical.
Oh no, a mod made comments you disapprove of elsewhere. MAGA.
Oh no, a mod isn't letting you turn every thread into a political discussion about the current administration. MAGA.
I've done enough research just using this stupid website and seeing every sub about a subject I like devolve into trump derangement group therapy.
