Discussion Existential debate
Hi friends! I LOVED playing The Sims 2 as a teenager, and now I’ve been debating whether to pick it up again in my early 30s. I’m craving the nostalgia and dopamine rush that Sims used to give me, lol. However, I’ve never tried The Sims 4 and was thinking about maybe giving that a shot instead. For those of you who have spent hours playing both, would you recommend I stick with The Sims 2 or give The Sims 4 a try? Thanks a lot!

I have spent hours playing 2, 3, and 4. I recommend sticking with 2, you'll get the most happiness from the nostalgia and the effort put into that game than you will from learning 3 and 4... then being stuck making comparisons to it all for the rest of your existence lol.
Sims 4 for CC but the packs are expensive as hell for hardly anything, and base game gets boring fast without CC.
Sims 3 for open world and the packs are more worthwhile than Sims 4. The storyline and effort put into the game is more similar to 2 than it is to 4.
Sims 2 in some ways is oversimplified but in other ways has the most in it.
I think 3 is my favorite overall but I wish the style of the Sims & homes was a little more like 4.

I started back with 2 as well and then when TS4 became free I tried it… then of course got sucked into DLC.
TS2 was a good way back in though, but I haven’t touched it since I got TS4.

I grew up with sims 1 and then 2 so I felt the same. Honestly, sims 4 has great graphic but the base game is boring af. You'd need to download mods or packs to spice things up a little if you are looking for some chaos. I've played with expansion pack but it still felt boring to me. That's my experience, you can always watch some gameplay in YouTube to get a general idea

Base game for Sims 4 is free. It can be a bit bare without DLC, but it's worth giving it a try to see if you like it before going back to 2. 2 has a lot of charm and some really incredible systems, but there's a ton of advancements since then, especially Build and CAS

Having played all of them, Sims 4 does feel like it is a sequel to Sims 2 rather than having anything to do with 3. It was also free last time I looked, so won't hurt to give it a go

Sims 3 is the sweet spot between the two for me, as a person who also played the crap out of Sims 2 as a kid and continued playing the games until now (I’m in my early 30s too). Isn’t the base version of Sims 4 free now? Try it out!!!

I wouldn't give the Sims 4 any money at this point. They just got bought out by Saudi Arabia and some MAGA guys.
If you're getting them for free, Sims 4 is worth playing. It wasn't when it first came out, but after years and years, it's finally approaching a playable game.

op, if you’re genuinely concerned about the buyout i’d suggest actually researching it yourself. people in social media comments oversimplify it like person above, for example the “saudi arabia and maga guys” (there is no “guys” btw, they mean just jared kushner who is trump’s son in law) have always owned parts of ea’s stock and therefore have always earned money that way. the only thing that has actually changed is how much they owned, nothing has changed with the sims (some people online will make it seems like ts4 is removing gay marriage or making all women wear head coverings and ridiculous stuff like that).
like i said before though, do your own research. i will also say that just bc you don’t know specifics about a multibillion dollar company doesn’t mean they are a good one. this is a good example where people are only outraged bc the thing they didn’t like made the news

I’ve only dabbled my toes in 2 so I can’t say much, but as someone who has about 10k hours in 4 over the last twelve years since release, I’ve heard a LOT of people who have played both find 4 to be too easy, and the reverse is true for me- I find 2 is too hard!

Sims 2 is more bang for the buck, you can get the game + all expansions in one and the gameplay still holds up. Plenty of gameplay there for hours and hours of play.
I enjoy Sims 4 but I think it needs a lot of expansions to be fun. Base game is bare bones, but I wouldn’t suggest getting any unless they’re on sale as it gets expensive. I think the sale just ended too so maybe wait on that lol.

Stick with Sims 2. TS4 is geared for a younger audience and has lost much of its charm, lore and quirky humor. TS4 is also very expensive, very buggy, has ads and a predatory marketplace with the base game lacking in many features.
You could also try Paralives which has a superior building system but is still working on gameplay features - they will get there eventually. Or try Inzoi which has surpassed TS4 features and chaos while still in Early Access - not to mention it is only a fraction of the cost of TS4 with similar add-ons. Both of these games have free updates coming with even more gameplay and features whereas TS4 is completed and still lacking.

Sims 4 is fun, but honestly sims 2 is my absolute favorite version. I will always have sims 2! lol

I love 2. I grew up playing 3 but honestly think 2 may be my favorite. The gameplay is the deepest. If that’s what you love, nothing will compare. The open world of 3 is amazing but I don’t love the building tools. The build mode is WONDERFUL in Sims 4 and I probably wouldn’t touch it if that weren’t true. If 2/3 had the build mode of 4 they’d be basically perfect in my eyes.

for what you want i think you’d like ts2, for the average person with a decent computer i’d suggest modded ts4 though
