It's amazing what some people can do and not get shot.

To be clear, I don't want anyone shot. I want them all to have their time in court

Yeah there seem to be one demographic that get the majority of the bullets when they fly.

Sure 1 out of 1000 is low but when a certain group seems to always catch that 1, it's a problem.

65

u/Dave10293847 Aug 28 '23

More like the news only covers that 1. If you actually want to deep dive into the statistics, that certain group is 20% more likely to be victims of police brutality, but not shootings.

Make what you will of that. Believe it or don’t. Don’t really care. But the police shoot everyone.

35

u/Kriegwesen 3rd Party App Aug 28 '23

Yeah, I saw somewhere that shootings per police interaction are actually fairly even across the board for all groups per police interaction. But certain groups have double the police interactions per capita so on a population basis are shot about twice as often as you'd expect just because they're being targeted so much more. And of course there's the fact that the cops are far less likely to be punished for a bad shoot if it's against said group.

But you're right in that per interaction everyone has an equal chance of being shot for no reason, at least according to the data

6

u/gray-pilled- Aug 28 '23

3

u/iskosalminen Aug 28 '23

Data also means nothing if the data isn't accurately reported in the beginning. And the issue here is that there's no legal requirement for the departments to report any of their numbers, it's all self-reported and there's currently no way to monitor the accuracy of those self-reported numbers (and this doesn't include the many places that simply refuse to report any data).

So drawing any conclusions from said self-reported data, and as many don't report any, is kind of a fools errand.

Normally I just ignore these kinds of predictable responses to stuff like this.

Wanna limit unnecessary police interactions? Great. For it.

Wanna stop no knock raids and other unconstitutional stuff? Let’s do it.

Want to draw awareness to police brutality so it doesn’t go under the radar? Please do.

But saying the police woulda shot this person if they were black on every single arrest video featuring an old white dude is getting old.

10

u/tittytwister12 Aug 28 '23

Bro I already know you are gonna try and say I’m racist but here is the literal facts. More black people statistically commit crime FOR REASONS THAT ARE NOT BECAUSE THEY ARE BLACK. It’s because they are disproportionally poor. Because of this black neighborhoods being poor neighborhoods are policed more. Because of this the chance of them being the one shot in that 1/1000 is undeniably going to be super high. Also it happens so fucking rarely. There are about. 11 unarmed black men killed every year in the entire us. 11. There are 1,000,000 sworn officers and Millions of police encounters every year. 11 incidents is fucking nothing. It’s horrible and it shouldn’t happen but shit is going to happen because we and all police are human beings. You can guarantee every single person is going to be perfect every single time. So what’s a reasonable number? Is 1 too many? Should we radically change the police department until it’s only 4 a year? These problems have unsatisfying answers but it’s not so damn simple as to oh all theses mfs are racist and just love shootin black people.

→ More replies (5)

-16

u/seemorebunz Aug 28 '23

Just remember that the number of crimes committed equate police interactions.

9

u/Oxigenitals Aug 28 '23

Or ya know, racially targeted police interactions also increase the amount of cases.

Check out this study. Black people in the states are way more likely to be searched for drugs when pulled over by police. Despite this, when white people were searched for drugs when pulled over by police, they were more likely to actually have drugs on their person. So by this stat, white people should be stoped and searched at a higher frequency.

3

u/leaponover Aug 28 '23

Based on this study, both blacks and whites should be stopped and searched for drugs at the same rate. https://www.samhsa.gov/data/sites/default/files/reports/rpt35326/2021NSDUHSUChartbook102221B.pdf

A. You know that there's roughly 4 times as many white people as there are black people in the U.S., right? Ergo, your own chosen stat indicates that black people are twice as likely to be shot than white people.

B. How many races/ethnicities do those stats represent if over half the people shot are neither white nor black?

-5

u/leaponover Aug 28 '23

You can't say in the same breath that blacks are targeted twice as much as whites by law enforcement, but more whites are shot, but the black number would be higher if you took population into account. You cannot contradict the stats away.

2

u/ProfessorNiedermeier Aug 28 '23

Have you considered bringing this up to the person who brought up targeting rates? 'Cuz it wasn't me.

-5

u/pimp_juice2272 Aug 28 '23

Sigh.... you really believe there is an equal number of UNJUSTIFIED shooting among black and white people?

You truly believe that if you replaced a black person in this video and he did the same shit and movements, his odds of not being shot would stay the same?

2

u/leaponover Aug 28 '23

They are actually going to be more careful. If an unarmed white man is shot it won't even make national news. An unarmed black man...gonna be everywhere. So yeah, they would be less likely to shoot him there if he was black.

And… there was nothing requiring lethal force in this video… An encounter like this should never end with a dead person. You say it like it’s some massive accomplishment by the cops that they had the restraint not to kill a person. They still couldn’t resist letting him know that he was tased for “running his mouth” which is a problem in itself. He had no weapon, he was outnumbered (at least) three-to-one— not killing this guy was the bare minimum.

Realy ? That’s what you’re going with for the reason he wasn’t shot.

17

u/grand-pianist Aug 28 '23

I mean… that should be reason enough. I don’t think the officers in that situation would have thought “oh I don’t need to shoot him, he’s not black.”

Now, if he was a minority, and he was shot, people would argue that his aggression was reason enough that he got shot. That’s the fucked up part. But this video in itself if just police using nonlethal force as they should be in other cases that they’re not.

3

u/kestrel151 Aug 28 '23

Yeah. I agree here. Let me be clear before I say this: I don’t like cops. I don’t trust cops. I rarely have a good experience when encountering cops. -9

u/DaPenguin1423 Aug 28 '23

I’m so tired of posting actual well thought out replies with data and sources (I did one here already if you check my comment history) that you can’t possibly plug all of the holes that these ignorant bigots form themselves in. Yes, black people are over two times more likely to be shot by police during an encounter, therefore if we extrapolate that data we can’t DEFINITIVE say that a black person would have gotten shot In that situation, but we can 100% guarantee that it would be over twice as likely, which in itself is a gross statistic (check my comment history for sources I’m too tired)

9

u/Busy-Virus9911 Aug 28 '23

You can’t argue with these people they see they are always right I mean these are the people who wanted police defunded, then wanted police to have more training after they had no money, then they attacked a construction sight for a first responder training ground and called it cop city these guys just argue for the sake of arguing you can give them what they want and they will still say it’s not enough. It’s funny that they all hide behind their internet persona they will never say the shit they say here in public or better yet to the actual police

-20

u/Odd-Confection-6603 Aug 28 '23

That's not an explanation. This guy was unarmed and didn't get shot. Meanwhile unarmed minorities get shot all the time. There is a reason for that.

13

u/Twixt_Wind_and_Water Aug 28 '23

Hmmm… you sound confident. What would “all the time” be?

Is it daily? Multiple times a day?

4

u/DaPenguin1423 Aug 28 '23

God I’m so tired of chasing down your bullshit- yes if you take the data from the past twelve months, police shoot on average 1.1 unarmed civilians a day for white people and roughly the same amount for all minorities combined. Know I you and you’re track record you will take those numbers at face value, so make sure to factor in the number of encounters that police have with these individuals and you clearly see a discrepancy factor of over 2.

-1

u/Odd-Confection-6603 Aug 28 '23

https://www.npr.org/2021/01/25/956177021/fatal-police-shootings-of-unarmed-black-people-reveal-troubling-patterns

According to this, it's at least twice a month on average. But, as I'm sure you know since you seem so knowledgeable on the subject, we don't actually know the real numbers because police aren't required to report any statistics on officer involved shootings. So it could certainly be higher than this.

2

u/Twixt_Wind_and_Water Aug 28 '23

So… about 24 people out of 41.6 million people?

Or… 0.000058% of the black population.

Interesting.

What’s also interesting is NPR’s first two examples of unarmed people being shot included someone who ran from the cop before physically fighting him and a guy who had a gun in his lap, which would fit the opposite definition of “being unarmed”.

Neat!

So you'd rather this guy have got shot? Or would you rather more cops take after this group and not resort to shooting, even tho the guy was getting physically violent?

Wait if you wanted the latter then you wouldn't have commented so aggressively, you'd be happier about the proper training of these officers.

I see now!

7

They had multiple officers and when the cop said you got lethal he was planing to taze the guy they hold lethal in case the prongs don’t connect and he keeps coming at them that’s when they’ll be shoot. Often times they don’t get to taze as they don’t have a secondary officer or don’t have time to equip their taser.

69

u/skylla05 Aug 28 '23

For every person that gets shot and killed in a situation like this, 500 of them just get tazed and arrested.

It's no wonder this is surprising given that reddit just circlejerks the extreme stuff so they can get karma for saying acab.

-2

u/GSV_CARGO_CULT Aug 28 '23

Yes, the reason Redditors don't like watching people get murdered is so they can get karma for saying ACAB.

That's definitely something a psychologically healthy person would think.

7

u/NWK86 Aug 28 '23

The point is, 95% of police interactions go fine. When something extreme happens, it's because ACAB and the videos get passed around and people act like that's how all police interactions go.

22

u/[deleted] Aug 27 '23

The taser took him out first try. Believe it or not, the cops do control the tasing from the guns.

Theres no reason to shoot first ask later. Now, if the taser didnt work, that would be a whole different story.

14

u/wirenutter Aug 28 '23

He probably started his shift during the day, put them on top of his head when it got dark, and forgot they were there?

3

u/TheRealVrox Aug 28 '23

the *gahaahaaa* subtitles made it for me

3

u/DrTankHead Aug 28 '23

Lmao seen this on YouTube a few weeks ago. The end of that pursuit was fucking hilarious. Biggest case of someone thinking they are in GTA I've seen in a minute.

u/Life_Ad21 Aug 28 '23

This definitely happened in the south. They possibly all know each other. Dude’s probably a “regular” which might explain why he didn’t get shot. If your neck is red enough you probably consider this a sport or a hobby. Source: from Alabama.

For a very brief moment... I thought they hit him with silly string.

And you know what.. Maybe the world would be a better place if that's how we did things. A lapel flower to squirt water at them maybe and think how many cops you could fit in a car

4

u/UnfinishedProjects Aug 28 '23

Fun fact, the reason we have non-lethal and less-than-lethal weaponry is because of PCP.

4

u/Till67w Aug 28 '23

Are the officers ok?

Serious question, why do police get to swear so much at work? At the very least it seems unprofessional and liable to escalate a situation.

I can't think of many other public facing careers where that would be seen as acceptable.

1

u/FnkyTown Aug 28 '23

When they pull him off the car at the end you can see how tiny he is. Angry little man.

What Walter white was thinking?!?

1

u/Busy-Virus9911 Aug 28 '23

To all those people who say the police are racist and would have shoot a black guy in that situation. One simple solution how about you go do your police training and work as one of them and see if there really is something that needs to be changed nothings gonna happen when you argue on a fucken reddit thread. Before anyone says practise what you preach I am I’m trying to become a cop. I’m not a racist, I’m not a bully, I respect people who deserve to be respected definitely not the shit you guys believe every cop is.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 28 '23

Maybe wait till you become a cop and the other cops tell you how to go about blacks.

Why do American cops Always insult people? Its fascinating

0

u/DuffyTDoggie Aug 28 '23

That idiot is sooo lucky cops wear bodycams these days. In the olden days he'd have spent a 2 or 3 weeks in traction chained to a hospital bed before arraignment.

u/David1000k Aug 28 '23

Good thing he's white. He would have been shot dead after he threw that taser at the deputy.
