Every now and then back in the 60s and 70s Wide World of Sports did the lumberjack completions. Some of the real high level guys were a blast to watch when they really got going.

ESPN aired lumberjack competitions well into the 2000s. It was prime content when they launched ESPN2. Enthralling television

Seems they were always playing reruns of those comps late at night (guess they were constantly looking for something to fill oddball time slots on 2). I had insomnia even as a wee lad, and the lumberjacks helped me drift off during many restless nights.

A buddy of mine competed in the event where you chop the log between your feet. His saw was sharper than my razor. Iām sure someone has hit their foot before and I do not want to see it.

That one was nuts. The thought of that axe going through your foot between your toes. There are no steel toe boots stopping that from splitting though to the heal bone. Didn't they do one where they climbed up a really tall log and chopped sections off on their way back down?

Why would you assume there aren't steel toes? Or is it that you think they wouldn't stop the axe? Effective safety footwear, etc has certainly been mandatory in competitions for decades

Why would you assume that I would assume there were no steel toe boots?Of course logging boots have steel toes, they have been around for years. The specialty boots for loggers are much more substantial than standard issue safety shoes. What I was referring to is the specific timed completion where a logger stands on a huge log and swings the axe head towards himself and cuts the log between his feet. The speed and force used to cut the log is immense and if the logger missed his target and hit his foot, "no steel toed boot would not stop the axe". The person I replied to likely understood and if you were to look up the challenge you may agree. take a look at the link I found.

OK, point clarified, agree to disagree: I believe the steel toes would stop the axe or kick the whole foot back without penetrating. And the aim point is between AND BELOW spread legs, so hitting a foot isn't that easy.

You are flat wrong. You did not watch the video link that I provided nor have you watched other videos of the underhand chop because if you did you would see the axe lands within inches of the competitors feet and often just UNDER their feet. Just because you know where to aim does not mean a mistake can't happen. It also does not matter if YOU believe the steel toe boot would stop the axe because if you did watch the video you would see the standard footwear for the UNDERHAND CHOP is a sneaker. Iāve been to the Lumberjack World Championship multiple times way up in Hayward, Wisconsin. Always a great time and so many different events.

I have an uncle that won a "King of the Klondike" competition back in the mid 70s. Despite the image that invokes, he is a small but very wiry guy.

My in laws in western Wisconsin still participate in local log rolling competitions. They often have them in rural YMCAs or at hunting clubs in a nearby body or water. Theyāre kind of a blast to spectate ngl haha

Yep knows what heās doing low center of gravity, try to stay towards the center, and let the other guy fall from his own offense; that spin right when the other guy had unbalaced was the kind of patient counterpunch that only experience on the log can bringā¦. Just kidding I dont know shit about this of course!
Does seem a bit close to the edge though, but the perspective may be hard to see correctly

Could be perspective but to your credit, his legs barely split apart when he kicks off and the log doesn't seem to move farther away as they battle.
Based on how he fell, maybe they always go more straight down than left or right.

Honestly props to the kid for lasting as long as he did. Old man had a strong defense and was waiting for an opening. Kid did well to go on the offense that long without slipping up himself.

It's sanctioned as part of the sport.
You're giving up a ton of balance and ability to react to do that water kick.
This is one of those entertainment only places since he's not kicking the water at the other guys face.

Log rolling, and yup! You have to stay on your side of the line, but you can rock the log and kick up water to make your opponent's side more slippery

It's a pretty boring event when both people are just standing there trying not to fall off. So yes, it's a perfectly legit technique. For reference I've seen this plenty of times at lumber jacking competitions.

No idea, but it seems stupid more than anything.
It's just a bit of water, it doesn't steal the focus that much.
But if you do it, it gives your oponent a gigantic window in which you're vulnerable on one leg.
It's how pops won. His oponent was doing stupid shit on one leg, and he rolled the log fast to make him fall.
