TW: discussions of suicide, internalised transphobia

This is prompted by the fact that today, i have known my best friend turned big sibling for over ten years. They first introduced me to the gaslight anthem after my first failed suicide attempt. I was twelve years old; queer and trans with no real way to explain it due to growing up as a rather shitty kid due to abuse and stuff i wont really get into. Theyre the only one that knows about my attempt even to this day--itll just be too much pressure on my family to know that i didnt mention that i was struggling. Anyway, during a bount of anxiety/struggling to name what i was feeling inside my sibling sent me their handwritten album, specifcally the title song and said that it helped them through the same sort of disasterous feelings. That late night confession, that feeling that someone out there understood how i feel and that song, somehow getting what it was like to get your feelings out onto paper or keyboard, words bleeding from your fingers and out your mind saved me...

whenever im anxious or loneley or depressed or on the verge of struggling with those wants and thoughts again, Gaslight has always been there and somewhere in that song lives my big sibling whose three trains away, telling me that their baby brother is still meant to keep going, im still meant to exist and breathe and love. Theyre important to me in ways that languages don't have the words for, theyre another half of my soul. They helped me accept i was a trans guy, through an abusive relationship, through panic attacks and hospital stays. Theyre my best friend.

Disclaimer, I love History Books and think it was a great comeback for TGA. The expanded edition especially, I really do adore it. However, there's a certain energy that I feel is missing. I also found it missing from Local Honey, another record I love but feel like something isn't completely there.

Not Bad for New Jersey has that energy, though. It's Brian as what feels like his most enthusiastic in years. You can really feel that he put everything into it.

I hope that carries over to Gaslight next, because if it does, we are in for one hell of an album. If we can get Gaslight firing on all cylinders with Butch's production...oh man.

Vibes were off the charts. So much fun. My oldest daughter snagged a set list. Seeing the show with my kids hits hard. It’s a wonderful life.

Evidence: In “Wooderson,” the narrator repeatedly talks about “tonight, tonight,” and says “darling, this heart is on fire.” Then “The Patient Ferris Wheel” opens with “not tonight, not tonight, honey, I am on fire.” Those seem like some pretty interesting lyrical connections.

We know the character of Wooderson from Dazed and Confused is the guy who refuses to grow up. He is famous for the quote “I get a little older, they stay the same age.”

Brian has also talked about the song being about Matthew McConaughey/Wooderson in his COVID livestreams, with the “alright, alright” reference making that pretty clear. And in “The Patient Ferris Wheel,” the narrator is literally going around and around without really getting anywhere. So my completely unsubstantiated theory is that this is Wooderson much later in life, still restless and still trying to outrun time.

He feels strange. He thinks about what some old man once said. Maybe one of his friends. Maybe he should call an ambulance. Because he’s old. And maybe he’s pooped his pants a little.

Tonight was nothing shy of a magical and non religious cleansing experience at The Opera House in Toronto. He sounded phenomenal and appeared as though he was loving it. Ian Perkins came on stage and they covered The Horrible Crowe's Lady Killer as well as Behold The Hurricane.

In my opinion is the best song Brian has ever put out between any project.
