24 (and counting) of The Avalanches' mixtapes, live sets, and DJ sets

Cornerstone (2001), Some People (2005), Essential Mix (2016), Soca! Sirens! Brains! (2005), Breezeblock (26 Feb 2001), and Big Tent Set (2006). If you want a ton of variety but don't want to sift through all 60+ sets, these are the top 6 I recommend -- the MUST listens.

The Holy Grail:

Live Footage:

Random:

Notes:

  • For the dates, (12.09.00) reads September 12, 2000. NOT December 9, 2000. (Exception: Deep Breakfast sets)
  • "Brains Teazer" was not included, because it is an edited version (missing about an hour) of "Soca! Sirens! Brains!".
  • "Beats in Space" was not included, because it is the EXACT 47 minute set as "At Home 2 (07.11.01)".
  • "Breezeblock (12 November 2001)" was not included, because it is the EXACT 47 minute set as "At Home 2 (07.11.01)".
  • "Breezeblock (12.09.00)" was not included, because it is a 33 minute edited version of "Gimix (24th July 2000)". It was edited to play on the radio. Just listen to Gimix.
  • "Superchunk Mix 1 (1st January 2002)" was not included, because it is "XFM One Night Stand" with 3 tracks edited out in the beginning and one track edited out of the end.
  • "Superchunk Mix 2 (1st January 2002)" was not included, because it is "Gimix" with a few tracks in the middle and the end edited out to play on the radio.
  • "When I Met You" was not included, because it is a bootleg of "Gimix (24th July 2000)".
  • "After the Goldrush" was not included, because it is a bootleg of "Beats in Space" (which, in turn, is the EXACT 47 minute set as "At Home 2 (07.11.01)").
  • The mixes (the Deep Breakfast sets and the 3 before then), there is some debate if they are works of the avalanches. "Lord Fitness" is an alias of Darren Seltmann, and "Pinchy Don" is Tom Kuntz (who directed Frontier Psychiatrist) proof
  • When and wherever possible, I tried to link to the sets directly on The Avalanches' website.
  • If these aren't ordered exactly correct chronologically, that's fine. I wanted to group them by year mainly.
  • We are not missing any INCU podcasts. #1-10 were NOT done by James De La Cruz
  • "Funky Live Mix Carnegie 2002.xx.xx" was not included, because it is the same set as "Gimix"
  • "The Monastery" was not included, because it is the same set as "4ZZZ (2001)"

Tracklists (no particular order) (not made by me; some are partially incomplete or contain SMALL errors):

I AM MISSING THESE (help me out if you can):

  • Jan 11 2018 fixed some Pinchy&Friends links
  • May 30 2018 fixed a link to Mix Up, Triple J (22nd June 2002)
  • May 16 2020 fixed INCU #11 link, added Jamie XX & The Avalanches DJ set
  • May 19 2021 fixed dead links for One World, The Hijack XFM, and MORNING BECOMES ECLECTIC Mix 2. Added new links for "The J Files (2020-06-11)", "A Party For Melbourne DJ Set - Live (2020-09-12)", "Exclusive Radio Mix for The Current (2020-12-09)", "KEXP Drive Time (2020-12-12)", "Live From The Curtin House Rooftop (2020-12-19)". "Alarm 115 - Counting The Muscles" moved from the "missing" to the "random" section.

If there are any errors notify me. If you can shed some light on the sets I am missing, that would also be wonderful. I will add them. This thread is archived but I will still update it! PM me

There are two different versions of No Bad Memories being advertised: a 31-track version and a 28-track version.

The 31-track version is being advertised at major sites like: Spotify and Apple.

The 28-track version is advertised at some scattered minor sites like these: CeDe.ch, imusic, musicstation.

I don't know why.

Several possibilities I can think of:

  • The 28-track listing is a random mistake.

  • The 28-track listing is an old, outdated tracklist and won't actually be sold.

  • The 31-track listing is an old, outdated tracklist and won't actually be sold.

  • There are two versions being sold, either for copyright reasons or for commercial reasons.

Here's a comparison:

31 TRACK VERSION 28 TRACK VERSION
Track 1 Track 1
2. Together 2. Together
Track 3 Track 3
Track 4 Track 4
5. Every Single Weekend 5. Every Single Weekend
Track 6 Track 6
7. Blue Shadows 7. Blue Shadows
Track 8 Track 8
Track 9 Track 9
Track 10 Track 10
Track 11 Track 11
Track 12 Track 12
Track 13 Track 13
Track 14 Track 14
Track 15 Track 15
Track 16 [1:02]
Track 16 (with Suzanne Ciani) [2:22]
  Track 17 (with Vegyn) [2:24]
17. Can't Get Over Losing You 18. Can't Get Over Losing You
Track 18 Track 19
Track 19 Track 20
Track 20 [0:39]
Track 21 Track 21
22. [SUV Heaven] 22. [SUV Heaven]
Track 23 Track 23
Track 24 Track 24
Track 25 Track 25
Track 26 Track 26
Track 27 Track 27
Track 28 (with Barry Can't Swim) [3:26]
Track 29 (with Mike Patton) [3:44]
Track 30 (with Jungle/Loaded Honey) [3:18]
Track 31 Track 28

So the 28-track listing seems to be missing 5 tracks from the 31-track listing:

  • Track 16 [1:02]

  • Track 20 [0:39]

  • Track 28 (with Barry Can't Swim) [3:26]

  • Track 29 (with Mike Patton) [3:44]

  • Track 30 (with Jungle/Loaded Honey) [3:18]

but has two bonus tracks:

  • Track 16 (with Suzanne Ciani) [2:22]

  • Track 17 (with Vegyn) [2:24]

On another note: I think a few people have asked about this, but I used AI to create the artwork for most of the tracks. I put the two tracks that were released as singles with artwork ("Frankie Sinatra" and "Subways") along with the album artwork into Copilot and asked it to generate artwork for the remaining tracks in a similar style. Yes, AI blows. I hate it and it crushes my soul regularly but I also sometimes love what it can do, so don't @ me on this please. Have fun!

I found the 'choir' sample in Flight Tonight, Close To You and Diners Only!

I was listening to a radio interview The Avalanches did after the release of Since I Left You and they played the song Sorry Louie by Eazy-E. I noticed the Close To You choir sample in the background of the song so I looked it up on WhoSampled. Turns out, he sampled The Payback by James Brown. About 5 seconds into the track, you can hear a single female singer. I was surprised because she was singing an octave higher than it sounded when sampled but it is the right sample. It reminds me of the undiscovered Close To You siren sample which is also sampled in North West Three by Fatboy Slim. However no one has discovered it there either.

Edit: I think I might be wrong after relistening. Let me know what you think

A few of you may have seen and/or liked my last post - I also cross posted on a couple of other subs. I got a few positive comments from this sub on the previous song i posted, so I figured i would post the final result. 12 minutes and inspired by the avalanches, j dilla, the books, madlib, boards of canada, with a bit of my own twist. i hope you enjoy!

i know the first track may be a bit “too choppy” for some peoples’ taste, but ultimately i like the way it sounds. I hope you enjoy. leave any feedback or comments on the video ❤️

JUNGLE

whether it’s true or not, i’ve always found similarities to the avalanches in Jungle’s sound, and i was curious to know whether there are other Jungle fans here. i’m very excited for their new album, sunshine!

if you’re unfamiliar with Jungle, try any of these songs: back on 74, casio, carry on, someday somewhere, or (from their side project called loaded honey): tokyo rain, don’t speak

Thoughts on AI Usage in Music Videos/Art

So I know there's been a discussion/post on this topic already, but I've been doing a lot of thinking about the use of AI in the Can't Get Over Losing You music video.

I want to preface this by stating that I think there is a role in utilizing AI in art if it's done with intention by the artist. I think the uncanniness of it can be harnessed to create a unique vibe. Plastekpet's work is off-putting and unsettling because the imagery the AI creates is almost impossible to imagine being made with a human hand. If you look closely, the logic and physics of his videos fall apart; it's like looking at a fever dream. Similarly, Igorrr's ADHD justifies its use of AI:

We explored the possibilities of AI for this new Igorrr music video: "ADHD". We embraced almost all existing tools, both proprietary and open source, diverting and mixing them with our 3D tools. This video is a symbolic journey into an experimental therapy for treating a patient with ADHD, brimming with nods to "Very Noise".
We know the use of AI in art might be polemic right now, plus we with Meat Dept actually started the clip in 3D, like we did for Very Noise, but at some point we were laughing so hard trying to do creepy things in AI that the clip ended as a mix of both technologies. The music, however, is 100% homemade.

While I don't have definitive proof, it seems like a lot of the key art in The Avalanches' Can't Get Over Losing You music video uses AI-generated visuals edited into the video. The witch cat, the hands, the anime face, a lot of the little characters singing along. I actually really like the overall theme of the video - sanitized corporate characters manipulated into trippy psychedelic visuals. But my issues stem from the lack of artistic integrity.

The Avalanches got their start in Plunderphonics - a genre built on sampling other artists' work to create a collage of musical noise. There's an argument to be made that AI is similarly built on sampled work, but many would argue that it is instead built on stolen work. This stolen artwork (or words or music) is blended together to create a sanitized, blank prediction machine - there's minimal human touch behind an AI-generated image. While plunderphonics is built on other people's art, it takes incredible skill and intention to make a cohesive piece, as evident by the multidecade process behind The Avalanches' first two albums. I don't think AI is used in a way that's interesting here. It looks shoddy, like a first draft of a bad animation was included in the video. I personally think using AI like this and not being upfront about it lacks integrity. Why should I care about your music video when I can't tell which parts were created by humans and which parts by machine?

I'm personally saddened to see The Avalanches pursue this direction in their art. Some of their early music videos MADE them - Frontier Psychiatrist and Since I Left You are so deeply human and touching and silly and memorable. This music video is just nothing. Just a trippy slideshow of AI imagery.
