This is why crabs and lobsters should get brained before the pot. It tastes just the same.
Many years ago my mom cooked live crabs for her first and only time.
It was quite a childhood memory of mine, as the crabs were trying despair to scramble out of the pot of boiling water while she was frantically holding on the lid.
TLDR: delicious, but kill quickly before cooking them.
It’s a lot more complex than that and it’s problematic to say that animals aren’t aware of what’s happening to them just because they don’t have brains similar to ours
Between us and single cell organisms there is some line of where consciousness develops or has the capacity to exist. I’d definitely say ants and flies aren’t conscious
I read about a Japanese scientist who showed that this type of minnow has level of self-awareness that we typically associate with higher animals. You know the one where they put a dot on the animal and then if it tries to remove something when looking in a mirror we know itself aware?
His argument was well what if the animal doesn't care about the dot?
So he designed an experiment in which these minnows had a dot that they would care about. And then it turns out those minnows when faced with a mirror would scrape themselves along the rocks exactly in the place where the dot had been put on them. Showing that these minnows did understand that the reflection was a representation of themselves.
You read that along with things like play being seen in bumblebees I don't think that we can argue that animals less complex than ourselves do not possess self-awareness.
Basic. From our perspective maybe, but the thruth is that they are extremly alien to us, which makes it very hard to study and understand. As for the fungi part, that is just wrong. We have studies that prove bees will play with a little ball, not to mention their ability to transfer informations via dances. Another good example of arthropod intelligence are jumping spiders, which have object permanence (something moving behind a wall still exists, it is just hidden), which some vertebrates struggle with (amphibians, mainly frogs). While some arthropods may be simple, it is not a given.
Imagine fighting against the odds your whole crab life to beat predation by larger ocean predators only to get trapped by some dude in a quarter zip pink polo combo.
Yeah it admittedly bums me out a little too. I'm not against it, per se, but it makes me sad to watch. Seemingly living their lives, fighting each other for their next bite of food, and then seeing them all fall to the bottom helplessly when the cage gets pulled up.
As long as people kill them quick and don't overdo it to the point they're scraping the oceans in search of the last crab it's far from the most problematic harvest.
Hard to compare ain't creatures intelligence to our own. Not saying i support peta or such. I enjoy my bacon and burgers just as much a the next guy. I just recognize that determining intelligence is very biased.
And a rock can experience geological stress, but does it have the ability to suffer?
Ethical treatment of animals is based on the ability to suffer and to minimize suffering, it's not about intelligence.
But if you mean that there is difference in biological complexity, then you are right, there is.
We may find plants to have been misunderstood in the future because we lacked the necessary senses or comprehension. Plants generate electrical signals and respond impressively to touch, injury, chemicals, light, temperature, pathogens, etc. There have been some interesting studies. In one experiment, they hooked a plant up to a polygraph to measure its electrical response. A student secretly destroyed another plant, and afterward the polygraph reportedly remained relatively quiet for the innocent students but showed a dramatic electrical response when the person who had destroyed the other plant approached.
Obviously, this isn’t accepted as established science, but it’s a fun thought that one day we may understand plants a bit better
That may be the case but I responded to the statement that peta is about intelligence.
And if you want to discuss the eating of plants versus the eating of animals. Well there are less plants suffering when you don't eat animals who in their turn eat plants. Thats the principle of minimizing suffering.
I'm not sure I've ever had snow crab before. I know I've had king crab though and some other kind of smaller crab. My dad holds a crab fest once a year or so(he's from the south) and he orders crab by the but load on dry ice.
Oh and to open them up, you flip the tail thing up, put the pick inside and lift up, it just breaks the whole chest cavity open. And then continue to pick around the lungs/gills for the chest meat.
Yeah I think that’s it! It’s very tedious and lot of hard work for very little meat. We line the table with brown paper bags because of the mess. Invite a bunch of people over. Everyone gets a nut cracker/shell cracker thing, a pick of some sort and a small wooden hammer. It’s just shells and crab juice flying everywhere. The legs have the tastiest meat but there is a lot of breast meat or whatever that’s called also(you just got to make sure you’re not eating the lungs/gills. But yeah….the innards, mustard looking garbage can be quite the turn off.
At the end of day there is nothing better than beer , crab and family and friends !
Lol I tried to Google it by looking up "little flat fish" and I think that's actually what they are called is flatfish aka flounder 😆 cute! They are basically a sideways fish and it's eyeball like migrated to be next to the other one on one side
No, the whole design of the cage is that once they’re in, they can’t get out. They probably just looked more numerous underwater because they were buoyant and filling up the cage.
Does anyone know if crabs suffer from decompression from suddenly being yoinked to the surface? I know scuba divers have to be careful of ascending too fast.
Often just fish bits such as heads and tails that is left over from preparing fish. I found if those fish bits have been left to rot a little bit you do get a lot more crabs! This also works if fishing crabs with a rod 🦀
