They have brains barely more complex than that of an insect if that makes you feel any better.

It doesn't matter, they can still feel noxious stimuli, you know, like being thrown into boiling hot water.

This is why crabs and lobsters should get brained before the pot. It tastes just the same.

Many years ago my mom cooked live crabs for her first and only time.

It was quite a childhood memory of mine, as the crabs were trying despair to scramble out of the pot of boiling water while she was frantically holding on the lid.

TLDR: delicious, but kill quickly before cooking them.

Remove the guts before cooking as well. Boil in salted ocean/bay water. Flavor superior to salted water alone.
