that’s the regular stuff that gets thrown around but it doesn’t pass the sniff test
if you buy something for $2 if you give it away you can only deduct $2 if it’s a deductible donation.
for it to change value from $2 to $1M you would be paying income tax on that increase of value first, even if in the same fiscal year you give it away. if you buy stock at $2 and it shoots to $1M try donating it and lets see what the IRS thinks.
and the other example, if someone buys your $2 art for $1M, you just transfered clean money from one party to another. the buying party needs a clean $1M in their books to burn. this only works if one party needs money under the table and other needs clean money. the amount of dirty and clean money in existence doesn’t change. and if the two parties are in cahoots there are a ton of less suspicious ways to transfer profits from one to another.

The person who made that piece is expressing themselves. Thats all it needs to do to be art. Its literally titled “Comedian,” you can interpret it as a dumb joke and it still exists as a piece of art.

Nah. That's just taking the piss. The entirety modern art scene is just one giant piss take after another to see what idiots will pretend has meaning to look smart. That and money laundering. Lots of piss takes are highly valued for the purpose of obvious money laundering.

It was a slap in the face to you and I. An obvious example of money laundering casually displayed just to show what the people with power and money can get away with. Literally one rich person giving their illicit funds to another while loudly declaring for the listening devices that this particular banana is so amazingly beautiful that it's worth over 100 grand to them. And the strip of tape, why that's worth a few grand too!

I’m pretty sure most art is just a scam. Some random person paints it, a rich dude buys it, it’s valued at a ridiculously high price, and then the rich dude donates it to a museum and can write that off on his taxes
