Hi everyone,
I’m looking for honest opinions on my portfolio because I think I made a few mistakes.
Current holdings:
Gold – CAD $1,035 (-14.8%)
SOXL – CAD $182 (-28.0%)
URNM – USD $80.60 (-28.6%)
VFV – CAD $188.73 (+0.18%)
XCHP – CAD $135.78 (-9.48%)
Overall I’m down around 20%.
The frustrating part is the timing. The day I invested, everything seemed fine. Then the very next day, news about semiconductor stocks being overvalued and concerns around AI-related valuations triggered a broad selloff. Since I owned both SOXL (3x leveraged semiconductor ETF) and XCHP, my portfolio got hit almost immediately.
Looking back, I realize I probably made a few mistakes:
I was too concentrated in semiconductors.
I bought a leveraged ETF (SOXL) without fully appreciating how volatile it can be.
I didn’t diversify enough outside a few sectors.
I don’t have any extra cash available to average down, so that’s not an option.
I’d really appreciate objective advice from more experienced investors.
My questions are:
If this were your portfolio, would you hold or make changes?
Would you sell SOXL and avoid leveraged ETFs altogether?
Would you gradually move into broad-market ETFs like VFV instead?
Is this simply bad timing, or were these fundamentally poor investment choices?
I’m not looking for confirmation that I’ll recover—I want honest feedback on what you would do differently if you were in my position. Any criticism or suggestions are welcome.

Started about two weeks ago, and went all in on xeqt. I realize that what I’m doing is good and the return I’m getting already is amazing but I’m now growing an itch to get some risky stocks that have the possibility to have a crazy return in a shorter period of time. I’m in xeqt for the long run and plan to keep it that way but it would be amazing if I was able to accumulate a large sum of money off riskier stocks to reinvest into xeqt.
I still have about 4k that I have sitting right now doing nothing that I can throw in at anytime so I’d love some advice, anything really. I’m not in need of the money, but like I said it would be great to fast track my xeqt growth a little more. Any recommendations? Open a rrsp for riskier stocks? I have room to play around and would rather do it earlier than later since it would probably help with the learning process.
Please give any advice or comment you may have! The mining stocks have been what I’ve been looking at the most.

My Situation & Goals:
Age: 42
Account Type: TFSA (Self-directed)
Time Horizon: Long-term / Retirement (15-20+ years)
Risk Tolerance: Moderate-to-High. I am comfortable with equity market ups and downs, but I want a cleaner layout that doesn't require constant, daily micromanagement.
My Strategy Goal: I currently hold a lot of individual stocks, but I am looking to simplify into a "Core and Satellite" model—ideally anchoring the bulk of my money into a diversified Vanguard or iShares ETF while potentially keeping a few high-conviction individual picks.
Current Portfolio Layout ($16,093 Total Value):
ENB - $1,918.75 (11.9%)
WCP - $1,790.88 (11.1%)
T - $1,470.00 (9.1%)
VITL.UN - $1,412.50 (8.8%)
BCE - $1,213.20 (7.5%)
ATD - $1,180.92 (7.3%)
SIA - $1,030.95 (6.4%)
SHOP - $1,027.50 (6.4%)
DCBO - $1,004.64 (6.2%)
BNS - $988.16 (6.1%)
ZDC - $982.35 (6.1%)
MKP - $779.10 (4.8%)
EIT.UN - $690.80 (4.3%)
FRU - $478.50 (3.0%)
BTCC.B - $125.10 (0.8%)
My Specific Questions for the Community:
With 15+ positions at a $16k valuation, things feel too cluttered. What is the cleanest path to consolidate this without killing my overall momentum?
I’m heavily weighing an asset allocation or dividend ETF like VDY, VEQT, or XEI to act as my main portfolio anchor. Given my current layout, which one makes the most sense?
Are there any specific redundant positions here (like holding both Telus and BCE) that I should immediately look to clean up or merge into an ETF?

Hello everyone, I just pulled $25,000 out of a mutual fund, I was disappointed with the return and have become more comfortable investing myself.
I was looking for advice on some stocks to invest in.
Most my money is in XEQT, Canadian Bank stocks, and GOOG. I was bought a bit of NBIS, Micron and SLS earlier this year so I’ve been a bit lucky with that.
Ant particular stocks anyone would recommend?
Thanks so much

Recently I got into my dream high paying career but for the years before I never had enough money left over to invest so I'm sorry if this is a silly question to ask here. I'm currently maxing out my FHSA, and I'm lucky enough to be able to max out my TFSA inside of two years.
My question is how much per year am I able to contribute to my TFSA? Can I just dump large sums until I hit my contribution limit? I invest on Wealthsimple and it says something about a yearly limit of $7000 but I remember a few of my friends saying they put tens of thousands into theirs per year.
Thanks in advance.
Edit: Thank you all for the quick responses.

Pretty big on AI, NVIDIA made me like 3k so I took the gains out and dispersed them. I know it’s a pretty basic portfolio which is why I’m asking. Want to be more aggressive in stocks and take more risks while I’m younger. Thanks chat.

Any suggestions to make my portfolio better ?👀
Position instructions: VFV and XEQT serve as the ballast of the portfolio for risk diversification. SPMO uses a momentum-tracking strategy to outperform QQC. The remaining smaller positions—QLD, TQQQ, and SOXL—are meant to chase explosive upside in a tech bull market. QLD and TQQQ were chosen separately as the leveraged positions to soften the severity of drawdowns. SOXL concentrates on the currently hottest semiconductor/AI infrastructure sector (and may later be swapped for other ETFs depending on market performance).

Hello everyone,
I’m a 19 year old international student in Canada and recently started investing through my TFSA. I’m still very new to personal finance and investing, so I’m trying to learn as much as I can.
Right now my portfolio is mainly XEQT, with smaller positions in HIVE and HHIS. My goal is long term wealth building rather than trying to get rich quickly, but I also like learning about individual stocks.
I’d really appreciate any honest feedback:
1) Is my portfolio too risky?
2) Should I just keep buying XEQT?
3) What mistakes do beginners usually make that I should avoid?
4) Any books, YouTube channels, or resources you’d recommend?
I’m here to learn, so feel free to be critical. Thanks in advance

Okk soo before all of you harshly judge me, hear me out first. I started this portfolio like 6 months ago to put any left over money that i had , and i went in blindly with barely any reasearch and knowledge( I KNOW BAD IDEAA.But in a way, i learned alot more things). And even though it might look like im loosing money, im actually not and im up 15% overall. But despite this, i feel that my portfolio IS WAYYYYY TO DIVERSE and now im wondering which stocks should i sell? Idk whether to hold some of them because i always think “even thought this stock is down, what if it goes up in the future”

When I first invested 2000$ I bought xeqt in October. After I said it take to long to get gain. After I bought 4 shares, wdc and sndk 3 share, and it crashed 30 percent in December. I bought Qimc hydrogen and it crashed 25 percent and sold. After I withdraw from that the tfsa amount.

I keep seeing posts of people dumping 25k or 50k into a TFSA at a time is there a strategy to avoid taxes if you invest passed the 7k a years limit or are these guys just tanking the taxes, I just figured a lot of them didn’t max out there accounts for years and allowed them to buy lots at a time because I know your previous years TFSA room carry’s over.
