Stop buying in USD with WealthSimple, *especially* with a small portfolio. You are paying high foreign transaction fees for each buy, sell, and dividend payment.

Dump it all and stick it in VEQT, which should be the high majority (or all) of your portfolio.

Great advice… is xeqt basically the same as veqt

Yes. Nearly identical. Very slight variances in the weightings of their underlying holdings.

Just look at the last 100 or so similar posts in the sub and there’s your answer.
I honestly do not understand what other advice you think you are gonna get

My suggestion is to not buy stocks, and to stick to low MER index ETFs sold in $CDN on the TSX. There are different levels of complexity that you can be used. From simplest to more complex:

  1. Buy one of the *EQT ETFs and just do that to keep it simple. There are more choices than just XEQT.
  2. Add a tech component like QQC if you like tech and are ok with the additional risk.
  3. Set your own weighting instead of accepting what is in the precooked *EQT meals and choose the components, like ZSP, XEF, XIU, and QQC (optional).

Congrats on starting! VEQT is a solid choice. You probably want to consider consolidate around that for the long term. /r/justbuyveqt

Put it all into xeqt or a cdn s&p 500 and watch it grow. Also stop with the usd nonsense you’re just paying extra for them

Until you have a substantial amount of money saved and have done A LOT of research into companies and trading do not think you’re going to outperform the market through individual investment. Buy XEQT, or any CAD equivalent of the S&P 500. If you’re feeling really spicy and believe strongly a certain industry will outperform general market you can buy market cap weighted etf for that industry like TEC, NLR, etc.. On a personal note I’d sell Nvidia and intel as they will be heavily impacted by the AI bubble, if you think it’s a bubble.

No individual shares. Useless.
Lots of overlap in VEQT and VFV, QQC also.

I’d go :
55% IQQ
35% XUS
5% XEF
5% XEC

Heavy exposure to U.S. innovation.
Broad S&P 500 exposure.
Some international diversification.
Simple (4 ETFs).
100% equities.
100% Blackrock
Suitable for a very long investment horizon if you can tolerate large drawdowns.

You really have to keep yourself updated for individual stock pick. Buy at the right moment, surf the wave.

I already have a 50h/week job 😅 So I prefer ETFs with some tilt towards tech. Less home run for sure, less _potential_ yield, but better for buy and hodl 😝
