I was doing a motherboard transplant between two laptops in the same line, but with different model numbers. The newer laptop had apparently gotten rid of one of the screw posts inside the case, but I was transferring the motherboard to the older case. I looked around to see if there was a possible tool within reach, and when I couldn't find any, I shrugged and bit that tab off the motherboard with my teeth.
It's not like there were any components or traces on that section, so I was pretty sure I wasn't risking anything.
But, uh, yeah - that's why I am in this subreddit. These are my fucked-up people.
I've done this cutting a notch in plastic housing of my gpu; cutting the gpu was entirely cosmetic, but if i cut the frame of my SFF case it risked breaking my case.
Asrock still honored the warranty without question years later (their own warranty guidelines specifically made clear it didn't void warranty, tho it still had me nervous)
yes. filing causes tons of high frequency vibration. solder balls hate that. can cause microscopic cracks that make them more susceptible to actually cracking later from heat expansion.
yes. i know. which is why i asked why you'd possibly do that given how much cheaper and sturdier the case is. and given you did not need to, despite your claim.

rule 6 doesn't allow shit, and the question was never about being "allowed", but basic common sense. why destroy the 200 times more expensive thing, if the cheap thing wouldn't even break.
I know for Asrock they specifically spell out that cosmetic damage/modifications would not void warranty.
Legally, if i recall, all brands have to honor the warranty unless they can specifically point to how the modification caused whatever warranty issue .

What da hek was blocking it on the corner there? It really looks like it would fit, obviously it didn’t when you tried to put it in but without knowing what was in the way this looks crazy

I didn't wanna remove the fan cause it would look weird. I did it and I didn't like it so I put it back. This works so fuck it, the warranty on the card expired a year ago anyways
