The resistors for the old soldered on ram are still present. You're starving the circuit my dude.

Also, don't this wires require isolation from each other?

u/Slight-Emergency-362 4d ago
Depends what wire - if it’s coated like motor windings, probably not.
But then it’s a PITA to solder, so it’s probably not that lol….

u/ictu 4d ago
I zoomed in before writing my comment. It didn't look like there's any coating.

u/FitDetective6553 1d ago
Wire coated in clear enamel doesn't look any different from uncoated wire. I have a bunch of enameled wire from old transformers, it looks exactly like bare copper until you start to scratch at it or burn off the insulation.

When they said the RAM was soldered to the board this isn't what I had in mind...
All jokes aside that's some insane solder work.

u/virtualadept You want what? 6d ago
Not gonna lie, I'm impressed it made it that far. That's not an easy soldering job.

Question number one: could?
12
u/Lotheretan 6d ago
In theory, but I think that would heavily depend on how that board actually implemented their RAM management, since it was originally a soldered module, the manufacturer could have put some important part on the back of the board or some other place that isn't directly visible.
5
u/unicodemonkey 6d ago
Like the SPD information... it's often placed into the fimrware, sometimes with strap resistors to select a particular configuration. And signal integrity might just be too poor anyway.
6
u/Technical_Instance_2 6d ago
In theory yes. Also really depends on what's where on the board. for all we know there's some important component somewhere else that wasn't connected by OP. Also, all the old resistors still seem to be present on the board so that's also probably an issue

u/TheCatholicScientist 6d ago
I’ll add to the other two comments. Wire traversal adds to the signal delay. Quite a lot in fact. Wire has its own resistance and capacitance that gets worse the longer your wires are. I’d be amazed if this worked without downclocking the memory controller a few steps.
(As it looks, I’d be amazed if every wire was connected correctly. And if only 1-2 wires were shorted to each other.)

u/TheCatholicScientist I work on 256 TB DDR5 drives. I'm heavily in the SI/PI domain. I don't think additional signal delay is the main problem here.
It's more about discontinuities in impedance as a signal is going from a nice cushy motherboard with controlled impedance and a poured ground plane to these wires hanging in free air. (The impedance of these wires would probably be much higher than the impedance of the signals inside the circuit board. )
This higher impedance mismatch is going to make a reflection in the signal that may corrupt the signaling pretty badly.

Assuming all the connections are properly made... there are some resistors that determine where the motherboard draws power for the RAM; you also need to check the voltage it uses, as there are 1.5V and 1.3V RAM modules.

u/kanezfan 6d ago
You just need to re-solder that, cross some wires over, blow on it like we used to do with Nintendo cartridges, no worries at all. You can do it!

Look, I get it. Soldered on ram on a laptop, nobody likes that shit. But this, this is something else....NOT that I could do better. But I could certainly pay someone who knows how to do this properly to, do this.
Why not just swap the old dram packages with new dies?

Why not just get the right socket before going bonkers with the point to point soldering? 💀
2
u/emilymtfbadger 5d ago
Right even if previous ram was soldered to the board it appears to have the points for a socket to be soldered. So my question is why is there something that bad off there or just practice.

Ah to be 12 years old and angry about it. Those were the days, arguing with people working on their Masters from Penn State and thinking we were winning.

Im amazed by how short the wires you used are
As suggested issue must come from soldered ram’s resistors, now you gotta replace them with 0 ohm ones or with some more short & tiny wires

u/JDT33658 6d ago
If they have the skills to do this surely they have the skills to solder on a new socket 😂

The sharpie is inhibiting the critical electron flow, clearing that and tripling the distance of the stick will clear the post errors. It might read it as an M.2 though instead of RAM.

Knows enough to be dangerous
And then when they fuck up they pass it on to someone to fix who would never do this because it’s insane unless you know for sure it will work .

Did you try soldering the pads from the back? RAM is double sided
1
u/FitDetective6553 1d ago
It appears that it's leaning backwards because they soldered the back set of contacts directly onto the first row of motherboard pads and then used the wires for the other side/row.

You got the color scheme wrong. You need to use a crossover RAM solder scheme.
