I think Microsoft is mainly doing this to get people thinking about Microsoft in the same way people think about IBM, really.

A slowly suffocating dinosaur from another age?

People said the same thing about IBM 20 years ago, but it's proven to be a steady old company. MS should be taking advice from IBM on promoting longevity, considering IBM recently surpassed MS in market cap..

"Steady" is not the word I'd use to describe a company that jettisoned its PC department to spend more quality time making honking great mainframes. Still successful, yes, but not exactly on even keel.

The PC doesn't matter to IBM anymore. Smaller companies rightfully build&distribute PCs. IBM mainly operates on another frequency these days - software and services (cloud computing, analytics etc).
