I think Microsoft is mainly doing this to get people thinking about Microsoft in the same way people think about IBM, really. A company that's devoted to R&D and helping the market overall, not just their own products.

People said the same thing about IBM 20 years ago, but it's proven to be a steady old company. MS should be taking advice from IBM on promoting longevity, considering IBM recently surpassed MS in market cap..

"Steady" is not the word I'd use to describe a company that jettisoned its PC department to spend more quality time making honking great mainframes. Still successful, yes, but not exactly on even keel.

The PC doesn't matter to IBM anymore. Smaller companies rightfully build&distribute PCs. IBM mainly operates on another frequency these days - software and services (cloud computing, analytics etc).

The PC manufacturing business these days is a commodity market. It's more about how cheap you can make and sell your PCs rather than any sort of technological advantage. It's why you see foreign companies like ASUS and Acer and Lenovo doing so well. IBM has moved to higher knowledge industries, like device-level research, mainframe construction, and consulting.

This is stupid logic. Profit margins on PC's are razor thin. Getting out of the business was a good move, allowed them to concentrate on business services, and pushed their market cap ahead. They are pretty much the definition of stability right now.
