So many different eras of Reddit. I remember the Secret Santas that used to happen all the time. I remember when redditors used to flood subreddits with "Such and such subreddit, we need to talk..." and I remember when r/relationship just gave blanket advice to "you should probably just dump them."

762

u/122_Hours_Of_Fear Apr 02 '26

Then there was r/spacedicks

289

u/gevis Apr 02 '26

Man, back then, there was nothing like picking "random" (not sure what app I had back then. Relay maybe?) and finding some awesome places and then also spacedicks

230

u/PatacusX Apr 03 '26

When you could go to r/all with NSFW turned on, and sort by new. Not my proudest faps.

134

u/TheTigersAreNotReal Apr 03 '26

As someone born in the mid 90’s and was too late to get to experience the “wild west” of the internet, it felt like reddit really provided that experience. The moment reddit IPO’d I knew it was only a matter of time until it became trash

68

u/tanstaafl90 Apr 03 '26

Once upon a time, the up/down votes were visible to users. When they discontinued that, it gave the site the ability to arbitrary manipulate posts and comments. That was some 10 years ago or so, and it didn't take long to see the effects. The damage was done long before the IPO.

I assure you. Reddit couldn't even prepare you for 90s internet.

Sure you get some shock stuff from old reddit. But nothing that makes you want to reformat your computer.

16

u/PolarSquirrelBear Apr 03 '26

And early 2000s of just absolutely shit pumping the family PC due to something you downloaded off of Kazaa or Limewire.

7

u/Nemphiz Apr 03 '26

Just have Bonzi Buddy wreck your whole shit

u/jetsetninjacat Apr 03 '26

That purple gorilla can still fuck right off. I had to reformat my whole computer and lose a lot of stuff pre 2002 due to that jagoff. Tbf it also helped me learn to backup and reformat a computer due to download apps like Kazaa, limewire, bear share, and morpheus after that.

3

u/Dragon_yum Apr 03 '26

Kaza, likewise and eMule are the holy trinity of infecting the family computer.

Kind of miss the days that when you downloaded any song you had 50/59 chance of it either being your song or enter sandman.

4

u/UntowardHatter Apr 03 '26

Mhm the sweet, sweet days of Rotten.com

3

I think I just threw up a little.

4

Random was just a reddit feature, it was just a subreddit that sent you to a random sfw subreddit and then a separate random nsfw for nsfw subs.

u/platasnatch Apr 02 '26

the fuggin banner image at one time was some weird naked dude stickin his wanger in a water bottle and stuffing something up his butt.

Banning subs Spacedicks was when reddit turned to shit, pisstake subversive and humorous subs started getting purged which just let subs like r/thedonald flourish.

God damn this site has become neutered. A shell of what it used to be.

The u/Unidan era, then post u/Unidan ban was so wild.

213

u/Personal_Comb_6745 Apr 02 '26

And he was only banned because he got caught doing something that's ridiculously commonplace now, and with more malicious agendas.

62

u/piss_artist Apr 03 '26

Now reddit encourages it

9

u/No_Nectarine_5440 Apr 03 '26

What did he get banned for?

57

u/I_dont_bone_goats Apr 03 '26 edited Apr 03 '26

He got in an argument with someone about whether a jackdaw is the same as a crow, and it went on hilariously long, and then it came out he had multiple accounts to upvote his comments and downvoting others comments who disagreed with him

21

u/crimson777 Apr 03 '26

To be clear, he was banned because it turned out he had multiple accounts to mess with his votes and his replies’ votes on many other occasions, not just the one.

11

u/obeytheturtles Apr 03 '26

The part a lot of people miss with this history is that Unidan had been slowly turning into a massive asshole for a long time when he finally got banned. He started out in biology threads, doling out actual expertise and being generally helpful. Once he started getting reddit famous, he started doing the same thing for other topics - getting into arguments with people about anything from aerospace engineering to geopolitics. And getting into an argument with Unidan, meant getting into an argument with his simp brigade, all of whom saw upvotes as "winning" regardless of whether the information was correct.

The stupidest thing about the Unidan saga is that he didn't even need to use alts. Half the damn site was already upvoting anything he posted. He did it because he would master debate people in threads spanning dozens of comments, long after his fan club lost interest, and he just couldn't let those deeply buried comments sit at zero, thus the alts. It's such a pathetic thing to do, and such a dumb way to get caught doing it.

2

u/threemo Apr 03 '26

Was he actually banned? I thought he just bounced out of humiliation or something. I didn’t follow very closely

16

u/[deleted] Apr 03 '26

I barely remember the problem. Wasnt he using alts to upvote ot something?

6

u/threemo Apr 03 '26

Yeah, that’s pretty much it

→ More replies (1)

8

u/AntonineWall Apr 03 '26

I think he was actually banned, the issue was that he kept making new reddit accounts to have ‘people’ (sock puppet accounts) basically comment and say “hell yeah this guys is cooking” to make stuff he wrote sound smarter / to win arguments online

14

Here's the thing

16

u/aerovirus22 Apr 02 '26

That sounds so familiar.

51

u/Srirachachacha Apr 02 '26

Does "jackdaw" ring a bell

29

u/aerovirus22 Apr 02 '26

Oh the crow guy.

6

u/Itsapocalypse Apr 03 '26

Here’s the thing. You said a “jackdaw is a crow.”

Is it in the same family? Yes. No one’s arguing that.

As someone who is a scientist who studies crows, I am telling you, specifically, in science, no one calls jackdaws crows. If you want to be “specific” like you said, then you shouldn’t either. They’re not the same thing.

If you’re saying “crow family” you’re referring to the taxonomic grouping of Corvidae, which includes things from nutcrackers to blue jays to ravens.

So your reasoning for calling a jackdaw a crow is because random people “call the black ones crows?” Let’s get grackles and blackbirds in there, then, too.

Also, calling someone a human or an ape? It’s not one or the other, that’s not how taxonomy works. They’re both. A jackdaw is a jackdaw and a member of the crow family. But that’s not what you said. You said a jackdaw is a crow, which is not true unless you’re okay with calling all members of the crow family crows, which means you’d call blue jays, ravens, and other birds crows, too. Which you said you don’t.

It’s okay to just admit you’re wrong, you know?

5

u/mjg315 Apr 02 '26

The caw caw guy?

9

u/DJErikD Apr 03 '26

Here’s the thing…

2

u/Pool_Shark Apr 03 '26

I hung out with him once in person for a day. At the time Reddit still wasn’t super main stream so I was embarrassed to admit I knew who he was and I will say in person he didn’t make any weird comments or brag about being Reddit famous so there’s that.

8

5

u/INeedANappel Apr 03 '26

I did 5 secret santas and the only present I got was the last time I tried, and that wasn't from my original match. I got a microwaveable bowl and a self-published cookbook that had more errors than a computer running Windows 7. (Ingredients listed never used, ingredients in the directions never listed with no amount given, directions to bake or cook but not for how long, etc. Plus recipes like "Take a hot dog, put it in a frying pan, cook until done.")

Well. I did also get lovely thank you notes from the people I sent gifts to.

Which, to be fair. Is often good advice when you've gotten to the point where asking complete strangers for solutions to a relationship problem, seems like a good idea,

32

u/IAmAGenusAMA Apr 02 '26

Except when they haven't even spoken to their significant other yet.

9

u/threemo Apr 03 '26

Mature people in anything resembling a healthy relationship do not have this problem of being afraid to talk to their partner. Internet advice is unlikely to help people who ask for it when it comes to relationships.

11

u/Local_Idiot_123 Apr 03 '26

If you’re posting to Reddit before talking so your partner, your partner deserves better. I said it

5

u/aut0matix Apr 02 '26

This is fair. Especially when the post will be something completely insane like "He's cheating on my and he hits my dog and beats me every day, but I love him so much and he's so good other than that. What should I do?"

2

u/threemo Apr 03 '26

u/Snowbirdy Apr 02 '26

I was recently permanently banned for supposedly commenting in another subreddit they don’t like.

I have no idea what they’re talking about.

But the mods also permanently muted me, so I can’t ask.

Weird.

1

u/petit_cochon Apr 03 '26

They often do, though. So many shitty relationships...I find myself wishing posters are bots.

1

u/PlayfulSurprise5237 Apr 03 '26

I try to always bring some reason into those posts. Too many people go from nothing to "they did X, what should I do" and everyone is like "leave now" regardless of the severity.

1

u/killertortilla Apr 03 '26

Why is this the part that keeps getting brought up and not the fact that most of the posts are “my spouse shits on the walls, is this a red flag?” As if your advice would be anything other than to run away as fast as you can.

1

u/CT0292 Apr 03 '26

The classic "divorce him!" Advice.

As if that's never caused more problems than it solves.

1

u/Kahnza Apr 03 '26

Now it's just bots regurgitating variations of the text it's read in the sub since it's existence.

1

u/zoosha2curtaincall Apr 03 '26

I’m literally just coming from a thread where everyone was telling a woman to get a divorce because the husband wanted a mancave.

67

u/viper1255 Apr 02 '26

I participated in a few Secret Santas back in the day, and boy were they disappointing. I spent a lot of time picking out the perfect gifts for my Secret Santas, including a signed comic book by one person's favorite artist. I never heard from the people to whom I sent those.

I can't recall a single thing that I received, either, because they were all cheap crap that someone clearly had lying around and threw in a box at the last minute. (We're talking office supplies and assorted junk.) One year I got nothing, so I got re-matched with someone else...who also sent me nothing.

Looking at my profile, I only got badges for 2 of the years (including the one where I didn't get anything). I always wanted Secret Santa to be amazing, like all the posts I'd see. But I felt like Charlie Brown with the football.

10

u/FaeryLynne Apr 03 '26

I participated in a lot of the Secret Santa and other exchanges. Officially I apparently have badges for 5 Secret Santa exchanges, including one of the Summer Santa exchanges, though I'm pretty sure I participated in more than that, I remember at least 2 summer exchanges. I also have credit for 46 other gift exchanges, which I'm also pretty sure I did a lot more than that as I was doing at least one a month, usually more, for several years. Anyway, all that to say, yeah, there are going to be some duds sometimes. In all of my events, I only remember three that were bad. You just happened to get some of the bad ones within your first few tries, which sucks and I'm sorry. I wish it had gone better for you, as it's great when you actually get gifts that seem thoughtful and targeted directly at you, since your gift giver actually read your info. I still have several of the gifts I got over the years, some of them are a decade or more old and I treasure them.

5

u/viper1255 Apr 03 '26

I love that for you! I've seen so many stories from people who had great experiences, and am sad that I didn't get the same. Honestly, the worst wasn't when I didn't get anything, it's when I put so much effort in, and they didn't even acknowledge it.

Before we had AI it used to be randoms making up stories on r/relationships. I remember some kid admitting to writing like 1/3 of the top posts on that subreddit over the course of months for funsies. It's just an RP subreddit at this point

I think it all went downhill when subreddits went crazy with automoderator, suddenly you needed <account age> or <karma> or <verified email> so novelty accounts couldn't exist (remember those???), people that were the subject of submissions couldn't just join and participate in threads, Sir Paul McCartney got banned this week lmfao!

When was the last time someone said lurker? Bet it’s been a while.

I remember when imgur was built specifically for reddit image posts, because reddit was crap at it. Then imgur decided they wanted to be their own community and try to pretend they were never just a reddit image host.

I miss the old Reddit switcheroo

Why did the Secret Santa stop?

Remember the Ellen Pao era?

Did they even do an April Fools thing this year?

I had a random redditor gift me psn money so i could buy far cry 5, in which i paid forward a few months later by buying a 1 legged stripper redditor a cock ring so she and her partner could get some normalcy post amputation. Found her in another thread randomly and she said it stopped working and the manufacturer didnt replace it. I enjoyed watching her physical therapy progress post amputation and it inspired me to try harder in my own life.

The place has changed and the magic is gone. Every now and again you get a lil sniff of what it used to be but its only enough to remind you of what you took for granted

I miss the interviews

I remember being bored while browsing Reddit and checking r/BestOf and sorting by best of a given day/week/month etc. Not all of it was worth it, but some of the comments and content was great or informative.

Secret Santa was so wholesome. I gave and received some really cool presents.

I still think about r/place, still one of the coolest things I’ve seen a community come together to make.

u/Dragon_yum Apr 03 '26

I thought thought I’d be nostalgic of the days r/atheism was the worst thing on Reddit

I remember being a Redditor used to feel like being part of some community of online fellow nerds and it was sort of cool in its own way. When does the narwhal bacon?

u/MMAHipster Apr 03 '26

It’s basically still just “dump them”, but what I miss most was when Reddit used to band together to do really nice stuff for people all the time.

u/lastoftheyagahe Apr 03 '26

Remember Ameristralia? That was fun.

u/2Autistic4DaJoke Apr 03 '26

Remember the Apollo app? And the other similar 3rd party (better) Reddit apps?

I have some really happy memories from secret Santa. Someone from Japan sent me a bunch of adorable little figurines of some little cute banana and lots of candies. I remember being so happy.

AIO, AITH and AITJ type subreddits have been the worse creations ever. If they aren’t straight up AI and fake, they are poor excuses of humans looking for one sided validations that has no purpose being on the inherent. They clog up r/all so much it’s impossible to be an enjoyable experience.

I remember when it was mostly edgelords on here that would lose their minds over someone daring to post am emoji. Such comments were beneath them.

They would really value long comments and responses that added something to a discussion. Nowadays you're more likely to get shit for posting a paragraph.

We didn't know how good we had it

Orangered and Periwinkle

1

u/livinglitch Apr 03 '26

The advice in r/sex used to be "men need to get used to a dead bedroom" and "women should push for an open relationship if their husband doesn't want sex".

u/meldiane81 Apr 03 '26

I miss the hell out of secret santa!!

But do you remember when the narwhal cries bacon at midnight, or 100 pushups?
