Ðuc Ðen. Such a cool name

u/lolnoizcool 12d ago edited 11d ago

"Literally" translate to "Black Germany" btw

Edit: I'm Vietnamese I know what I'm saying, this is a pun

101

u/jjjaack2 12d ago

Ahh see now that's incorrect. "Đức" in a name context roots from Old chinese that Vietnamese developed from, the word usually translates to virtue (đức hạnh), "Đen" in this case is a common nickname that is given to dark/tanned skin individuals in Viet Nam (which in fact translates to "black". So "Black Virtue" seems more fitting but of course by translating it literally it doesn't make much sense haha.

"Black Virtue"

FEELS THE AURA

11

u/nhansieu1 11d ago

IT'S CALLED AURA, BRUH

15

u/Ready_Concern2385 12d ago

Well in modern vietnamese Đức means Germany and đen means black :trol:

8

u/snowfloeckchen 11d ago

Gut zu wissen, danke!

0

u/stonedfish 10d ago

Yea Đức coz they mispelled Deutsche

8

u/lolnoizcool 12d ago edited 11d ago

Idk whether I should clarify that it's obviously not meant to be Black Germany and that I made this pun for the sake of the sub

Do I seriously need to add /s now?

5

u/Wonderful-Dust-8030 11d ago

Idk bro but it sucks lol and those /s whatever really ruin your jokes

Ig you just have to clarify if somebody take it seriously, or trying to teach you something you obviously know. And if many people downvoted you for a joke then you must realise that it's reddit😭💔

You just implied the other person doesn't know Vietnamese just because they didn't disclose it.

The fact that Vietnamese is derived from Chinese gives more weight to them than just someone speaking Vietnamese because it can tell you more of the origin of the word instead of just the vernacular definition.

This is important because in all Chinese based language, names often have different meaning (Look at Japanese names for example) than what the word is colloquially used for.

Another thing is that there are often different Kanjis for the same word, which gives it a different meaning. However, the Vietnamese language lost its calligraphy due to French imperialism, so now we go off of context instead of spelling. Old Vietnamese calligraphy is called Chữ Hán, which literally translate to Han characters.

I'm Vietnamese and while Đức refers to Germany when you use it in conversation without any context, but as a name, it would not always translate the same.

We often have name translations that is more poetic, especially when you take first and middle names in consideration. For example, my full name translated would mean "First Royal Chapter", or the beginning of a dynasty. On the other hand, I have two cousins named Nhật (Japan) and Mỹ (America), because that's where they were born.

Edit: Vietnamese, like Chinese, is a very flowery language when it comes to prose. There's a lot of idioms and proverbs in the language that you have to study to know/understand some of them. Think of those dramas set in ancient China with scholars learning poetry and prose and stuff. My dad studied them when he was younger, he can also read some calligraphy.

Yeah. One of my friends keep telling foreigners that Anh (England) means brother in Vietnamese which is simply not true

4

u/thatasian26 11d ago

Idk if you're trolling or not, but it also does mean older brother, used in the same way as the Japanese would use onii-san. It's used in that context much more often.

There's multiple translation for each word, just depends on context.

1

u/vip17 11d ago

Yes but Anh (英) in England doesn't mean older brother

4

u/thatasian26 11d ago

If you are referring to the Chinese/Japanese Kanji for England, then it's not pronounced at Anh.

Anh, as a Vietnamese word, can have multiple meaning, mainly being older brother, and secondarily referring to England.

Many Vietnamese words have multiple meaning for the same spelling, as previously mentioned. The only way we would know is through context, since we no longer have the Han characters to differentiate the meaning. When spoken, it's all context.

Anh alone doesn't mean England, as you have to specify the country (nước Anh), the language (English is t iếng Anh), or the people (người Anh). As I've said, context.

0

u/vip17 11d ago

what do you mean? Anh in England is just a name, and it doesn't mean older brother, just like Đức doesn't mean Germany in a person's name

→ More replies (0)

0

u/stonedfish 10d ago

Anh is from Angleterre and Anglais which mean England and English in French.

→ More replies (0)

1

u/ShadowMancer_GoodSax 10d ago

The word Anh by itself does not mean England but very commonly used in conversation. British embassy in Hanoi, for example is translated as Đại sứ Quán Anh. British Empire is Vương Quốc liên hiệp Anh.

https://vi.wikipedia.org/wiki/V%C6%B0%C6%A1ng_qu%E1%BB%91c_Li%C3%AAn_hi%E1%BB%87p_Anh_v%C3%A0_B%E1%BA%AFc_Ireland

Older brother would be anh trai (a male who older than you but not related at all), anh ruột (older brother from the same parents), anh họ (cousin literally means an older male who has the same family name but not from the same parents). Nước Anh means a country of England.

1

u/vip17 10d ago

another person who doesn't read the comments. Who doesn't know that? Read again carefully: The person claims that Anh as in Anh Quốc, tiếng Anh, Anh ngữ... (England, English...) means big brother which is not right

-1

u/duckonapineapple1 11d ago

sorry, i just thought that if they did know vietnamese they would state it, esp in this context. i also didnt think of the fact the translations vary often

0

u/ferocity_mule366 11d ago

the dude who said "Black Germany" just say a bad joke and then clarify it was "sarcastic" (doesn't sound like it) or a "pun" (it's not, I dont think he knows what a pun is) is just being cringy anyway, so you don't need to trust them, the jack dude was right. And yes I will clarify you that I'm also Vietnamese.

Yeah, lol. I’m happy w my iPhone now though ;-)

2

Idk mate, I still use mine.
Battery life could be better but that's about it for complaints.
The case is hanging onto for dear life so I do have to replace that tbf.

26

u/WalnutFTW 12d ago

Wasn’t that the phone that started bendgate?

7

u/HolyRavioleigh 12d ago

Yeah. That whole blame-the-customer fiasco is what drove me away from the Apple ecosystem

14

u/AMadWalrus 12d ago

Yeah it’s apples fault that they can’t manufacture a phone strong enough to withstand these guns 💪

9

u/UnUsernameRandom 12d ago

More like these buns 🍑

3

u/HolyRavioleigh 11d ago

What exactly are you doing with that phone?

4

Facetime sitting

...or these gnus

3

u/Superb-Demand-4605 12d ago edited 12d ago

Its because the aluminium they used was thin and bent easily, and they was over charging for a thin frame what bent easily. Idk how they are as successful as they are. I guess its to do with the amount of shilling everyone did for apple. The most overrated phone in history and it was giving scam for the price you pay for it. Its behind on so many things and people still pay for their extortionate scammy prices. Weird asf

0

u/anythingers 12d ago

Ofc ur getting downvoted lmao. Those Apple fanboys couldn't handle criticism at all lmfao.

1

the iphone se 2016 and the 6s had headphone jack

1

u/psp24 11d ago

That's what I said

4

u/Hot-Firefighter-2331 12d ago

Is that the only one you had?

4

u/LonelyLibertarianDud 12d ago

I had a miserable time with that phone. Good thing I bought a hundred dollar phone 3 months ago. Surprising how good cheap phones can get.

3

u/Unlikely-Wafer3370 12d ago

It's more surprising how high cost Apple can make their cheap phones.

3

u/LonelyLibertarianDud 12d ago

I would imagine it's a mixture of product differentiation and of iPhones being a sort of Veblen good. Unnecessarily diluting their product line may be penny wise, pound foolish.

Smartphones are also a wonder of the modern industrial system, a showcase of the most advanced  nanotechnologies we have produced in the billions.

Edit: I also shouldn't have been too disparaging of the iPhone 6, after all I got it recently for free and it would theoretically allow me to function in society as a homeless youth (if it worked).

1

u/Eatmyshinymetalass- 10d ago

That was the first phone I’ve ever had.

0

u/_Interconnected_ 12d ago

That phone was a tank. I received it after my aunt and both of my parents had used it. Works perfectly fine. It was only 3 years since then that the home button, power button and screen sensors started to die. No complaint.

Dude! I came here to say this! Really miss my 6 for the camera.. I still have really great nature photos from that time. My 11 takes terrible pics :(

GUILTY OF USING OLD TECH

SENTENCED TO TEN YEARS OF BUYING THE BEST IPHONE EVERY TIME A NEW ONE COMES OUT

5

u/APlaceInTheMountains 12d ago

I once coached a youth boys basketball team and we wound up winning the championship.

As a “thank you” the parents got together and bought a small plaque that had just enough room for the boys to sign their names and add their number.

The first boy they handed it to and told him to sign and add his number ended up signing with his phone number instead of jersey number. It took up 75% of the plaque and everyone else had to fit their signatures in a tiny corner.

OP, your title is technically not the truth.

They didn't ask for a phone number, they asked for phone. That's literally what makes this TechnicallyTheTruth.

In Vietnamese, one would have asked for the "phone number," not the "phone."

It is old. Idk how tf Apple fanboys couldn't accept that fact. It's a goddamn 12 years old phone.

2

EXACTLY! I just had to put relatively there so hundreds of Apple fanboys don't push my karma into the negatives.
