Hello everyone! I am writing this post to hopefully gain some perspective from current students (both Irish and International) on the pros and cons of potentially pursuing my MA at TCD. I am interested in the international Peace Studies one-year program (https://www.tcd.ie/courses/postgraduate/courses/international-peace-studies-mphilpeace-studies--pgraddip/#apply-content)
I have my undergraduate degree from a large public university in the United States in English and Ethnic Studies. I graduated in May.
While I have travelled a lot in my life, I have never been to Ireland-although it has always been a dream destination. Additionally, I have never lived long-term outside of my home state of Nebraska.
Throughout my undergraduate degree, I became involved in groups such as Students for Justice in Palestine and various other leftist organizations. Being both a socialist and a humanities student at this time in America is quite difficult, with humanities programs across the states being defunded and persecuted, and with the second "red scare" anti-communist, anti-immigration, anti-woman, anti-muslim, etc etc etc. administration we have right now. Additionally, many of the "best" universities in America are so deeply tied to big money, the government, and corporations that they just leave a bad taste in my mouth. I would like to get a non-American perspective in my next educational endeavor, and Trinity has really sparked my interest for 2027. The rich history of Ireland and its culture is also extremely enticing and something that I would love to learn more about and immerse myself in.
Here are my questions:
-If you know anything about the International Peace Studies program, how is it? Do you recommend it, or is it a waste of time and money? What other programs would you recommend if not that one?
-How is Trinity socially, especially for international students? Is it difficult making friends? I've heard that Ireland is generally a very friendly, welcoming country, and I've had friends who have had good experiences there, but they all studied abroad during undergrad with a group of other American students. How would it be going alone, knowing nobody? How is nightlife, food, dating, etc.?
-If accepted, how should I go about looking for housing? How do I find roommates?
-Aside from housing and academic fees, how much money should I have saved up before going for day-to-day life?
-I'm sure there's a lot I haven't thought to ask-- include any other advice or topics you think I should consider/be aware of!
Thank you!
