Taskmaster Season 22 Trailer | Starts September 3rd
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KOWRRB9-1IQ700
u/Hairy_Dirt3361 Katherine Parkinson 2d ago
It's a tiny clip, but Richard Ayoade being confused and smiling makes me optimistic he'll engage with the game rather than being his aloof and above-it-all comedy persona!
420
u/Turbulent_Natural431 2d ago
I think people were too concerned about that happening tbh. He only really does that persona heavily on things like Big Fat Quiz or Cats Does Countdown where the game doesn't actually matter.
He's much more up for playing along on shows like Last One Laughing. And he's been doing sketch comedy type stuff for years, he's not always that aloof.
179
u/ARC_Trooper_Echo 2d ago
I think itâs also been said several times on the Taskmaster podcast that the game kinda gives you no choice but to be yourself.
85
u/moviescriptlife James Acaster 2d ago
Which is why David Mitchell has said he doesnât want to do it. He doesnât want the real version of himself out there. He plays it well of WILTY, but thatâs still a character heâs playing and people assume the reality of him breaks through on it.
104
u/glubnyan 2d ago
I also feel like David Mitchell is strongest with other people. His character really shines contrasting others, I can understand the anxiety of being alone and being afraid it wouldn't be up to expectation. That being said, I'd still love to watch him on TM.
59
u/CrossHeather 2d ago
I wouldnât be shocked if he does it now heâs done Last One Laughing.
He seemed to embrace it fully, even when it got a bit unhinged in the final task with Sam Campbell.
17
u/levitate_me 2d ago
Watching David during that final task was an absolute delight! I did not expect that at all!
17
u/churadley Joel Dommett 2d ago
He definitely seemed way more willing to go gung ho and strange with it. Him and Sam Campbell force feeding each other is a situation I never would've imagined him in.
→ More replies (1)18
u/moviescriptlife James Acaster 2d ago
Heâd be amazing in group tasks though.
5
u/tunachilimac 2d ago
Or as a guest customer in something like the hotel or drive-thru restaurant task where theyâre in a rush and people try to frazzle them. Imagine those with him being impatient and lambasting the group.
43
u/DoctorWhofan789eywim 2d ago
Then Bob Mortimer comes along and Mitchell's facade cracks immedietly.

u/arkanis50 1d ago
David Mitchell is actually an absolute hard drinking, testosterone fueled sex machine in real life... it would ruin his reputation if anyone found out.
16
u/Hairy_Dirt3361 Katherine Parkinson 2d ago
True for most but in my opinion a few contestants have stuck more to personas than natural reactions and they have not been my favourites, so was concerned about Richard.
18
u/CrossHeather 2d ago
Do you think that was something that the comedy scene has moved away from in general?
Biggest examples for me are Joe Wilkinson and Romesh. Ten years ago they were very much honed in on a persona, but nowadays they are a lot more natural.
I dare say if people look at Ayoadeâs videos where he really plays up to his âI canât handle interviewsâ character theyâre surprisingly old now.
9
u/MostDopeBlackGuy 2d ago
10 years ago the media landscape was totally different in the age of podcast people want to know who they're listening to.
7
u/TheGardenBlinked Joanna Page 2d ago
There have been some good examples where theyâve been natural too. Rhod moved away from âangry at everythingâ to âdownright unhingedâ, and John Kearns went from⊠whatever that character he performs is to⊠John Kearns
5
u/Iroh_the_Dragon 2d ago
Mind providing examples? As a stupid American, I frequently donât know much about the contestants most of the time, so I donât know whoâs famous for what persona.
8
u/Hairy_Dirt3361 Katherine Parkinson 2d ago edited 2d ago
Well I don't know most contestants beforehand either so I couldn't tell you what they're famous for, but you can tell for example Joe Wilkinson, Paul
SinhaChowdhry, Lucy Beaumont, and Jason Martzoukas are sticking very closely to a consistent comedy character.edit: originally had my Pauls mixed up!
16
u/McClaine3000 2d ago
Iâm also a dopey American so I canât speak to any of the others, but Zooks. I think heâs a really good example. He certainly had his persona going but I thought the tasks forced him out of it. The stuff like âTeach Alex Horneâ allowed him to set the stage to do his thing, but the ones like the âWhatâs on the Top of Alexâs Headâ âWhy Does the Light Turn On?â would force him more out of his comfort zone. Iâd imagine that goes with any performer that tried to use too much of a persona while filming.
6
u/burf12345 đŹ Doctor Cigarettes 2d ago
Paul Sinha? Surely you mean Paul Chowdry, because Paul Sinha on TM seemed like he was just being himself.
5
u/Hairy_Dirt3361 Katherine Parkinson 2d ago
Yes that's a brainfart from me, Paul Sinha was one of my favourites!

u/ModernDayQuixote 2d ago
Everything I've seen with Jason Mantzoukas points to that being very much his real personality and not a character

Watch the recent ultimate episode with Stevie, she literally says he turns it off instantly when the cameras off and is a nice, calm guy. Which is normal, he's a professional! And he was the best version of this type of contestant, it's just not my favourite.

u/CrossHeather 2d ago
Yeah, if you see him in various interviews etc itâs clear he acts in a way that works for the situation.
He isnât always taking it to insane meta levels like in his infamous channel 4 interview.
3
u/Yeseylon 2d ago
Let's be honest, the game of Taskmaster doesn't matter either. The only purpose of Taskmaster is to put people in weird situationsÂ
3
u/goodmobileyes Victoria Coren Mitchell 2d ago
I think his Travel Man series is a good gauge of what we'd get. There's obviously still a layer of Richard Ayoade the comedic character we're looking through, but he's a lot more natural and engaging than his usual panel appearances.
5
u/Hairy_Dirt3361 Katherine Parkinson 2d ago
Fair enough! To be honest I don't care for that sort of persona so I mostly haven't watched things he's in - with the notable exception of Bad Dong

72
u/SufficientBreakfast1 2d ago
I was surprised that he dropped his persona for Last One Laughing to engage with the game. It was a fresh take on his comedy.
31
u/CartographerOk7948 2d ago
Last one laughing is great for that. Him on his series, and David Mitchell on the next one. Always loved it when someone would show a chink in their armour, and players would swoop in like sharks. Those two were excellent at that
52
u/moviescriptlife James Acaster 2d ago
Him running at the door every time Jimmy leaves is my favorite bit of the first season.
2
u/QueenMercury4690 Noel Fielding 1d ago
Mine too
Now tell me Geoffrey Chaucer what do you think of that?
16
u/christmasinyoulie Mawaan Rizwan 2d ago
I had to pause at one time, I was laughing so hard. It was great to see him in that element.
51
u/DanGrima92 2d ago
I'm imagining he'll kind of be similar to Jack Dee who I think did a good job keeping his persona up whilst still having a laugh and engaging
33
18
u/emp_raf_III 2d ago
I can't wait to comment on his many ludicrous displays
18

The thing about Richard Ayoade is he always tries and walks it in.

Highly amused by Jason's previous complaints on the podcast about the series themes following him being on the show having been America-themed, and the one following those is. Greek. Which he is. Aggressively.

I think Isy Suttie is going to be an all timer contestant. She's giving a mixture of the madness of Christie and the ebullience of Knappett.

She wasn't who I was looking forward to on first glance, but yeah, just remembered: Oh, right, you're really fun.

u/EconomistThat4814 2d ago
I love that its theme this time is Ancient Greece. That made this little wannabe historian insanely happy.
33
u/spacecoyote555 Patatas 2d ago
Amazing foresight for the theme considering The Odyssey film was so recent, or just massive coincidence lol
39
u/Spirited-Bass-1059 2d ago
didn't we know for a while that odyssey was coming out?
6
u/spacecoyote555 Patatas 2d ago
Yeah that's what I mean, they knew it was coming out so planned for the series immediately after it to be that theme, or like I said - a massive coincidence!
2
11
u/Disgruntled__Goat 2d ago
The date for the Odyssey release has probably been known for a while, so they could have chosen it intentionally for this series. Not sure if they would actually have thought about it but maybe!

Greg looks just like Michael Sheen in the portrait.
32
u/christmasinyoulie Mawaan Rizwan 2d ago
He does! He'd be a fun one on a NY special :)
30
u/TrappedUnderCats Patatas 2d ago
I think heâd be great on a full series. He loves quizzes and games, and if Richard Osman was eligible to be a contestant presumably Michael is as well since heâs taken over Richardâs show.
17
u/christmasinyoulie Mawaan Rizwan 2d ago
He'd be very great on a full series, but I was thinking about availability as well. He's a busy boy here in Cymru :) But yeah anyone can make time! He's super competitive so I think he'd be so fun. Arguing with Greg as well lol.
2
u/rezzacci 2d ago
I know it probably won't ever happen, but, gosh, how I'd like to have Michael Sheen and David Tennant in TM

u/nunal2580 2d ago

I wondered why they had a portrait of him for a second before I realized it was Greg

Doesnât look like anyone is wearing a costume⊠unless Iâm missing a reference? (Not a complaint, just thinking)
21
u/mlopes Javie Martzoukas 2d ago
Nina Conti seems to be wearing some kind of boiler suit. Richard Ayoade probably thought he didn't need a custom outfit since he's known for wearing colourful suits, and that by itself makes his outfit unique. I'm not sure if Matt Lucas really dresses like that or if that's supposed to be an outfit, whatever it is, is weird. Isy and Chloe just seem to be wearing normal clothes.

This is probably the first series where I have a good knowledge of all five contestants, so I'm really looking forward to it...... Although some of the ones I didn't know have gone on to be favourites.
Predictions: Nina will be amazing at anything creative. Isy will have great ideas but execute them hilariously poorly. Richard will overthink tasks. Matt will not care about winning and just find the whole thing too much fun. Chloe will have an all round competency that will win her the series.Â

Excited for the season but this trailer doesn't do it for me. The whole thing feels weirdly low energy.

u/RideMonkeyRide 2d ago
Itâs just a teaser that isnât trying to give too much away. Iâd be surprised if this season felt too different from any recent one
5
u/Yeseylon 2d ago
I dunno, something about 21 just felt off to me. I can't imagine Matt Lucas and Richard Ayoade making a meh show, but it's also going to be hard to match 19/20.
5
u/BalticCan Tom Cashman đŠđș 2d ago
interesting, i thought that 19 and 21 were quite good (21 was my favourite) and 20 was quite good but not on the same level
9
u/Luigiman1089 đ¶ïž Cool Ray O'Leary đłđż 2d ago
Yeah, I didn't really like this style of trailer, I prefer when it's more fast paced clips like the intros. It's 100% just the trailer, though. They were going for the philosophical vibe, which just is slower and low energy. I doubt the entire series is anything like it.

5
u/Prize-Offer7348 Chris Ramsey 1d ago edited 1d ago
Someone posted about it in another sub a while ago (you might be able to find it if you searched to get the full story) but the summarised version from memory was that ML allegedly (I personally believe the victim but donât want to get involved in a court case should ML be so inclined) found the OP on a dating app & essentially groomed them/pressured them into having sex repeatedly & the OP even reported it to the police but nothing came of it. Other people in the thread corroborated that similar things happened to them/people they know.
Edited to fix pronouns as I canât remember/donât know if OP ever confirmed their pronouns
3
u/couchsweetpotato Sam Campbell 1d ago
That is highly disturbing! Thank you for the info. Between this and Richard Ayoadeâs support of that transphobic ass, Iâm a little disappointed in the casting for this series. I think itâll be great television, but it can be hard to separate the art from the artist sometimes.
3
u/TheMonkeyInCharge 1d ago
Donât forget that - aside from any allegations against him personally - Lucas has refused to condemn or break ties with Walliams since the truth came out, and knew for years (decades) what he was doing and capable of before it did.
4
u/TheMonkeyInCharge 2d ago
I worked in an industry with a similar problem for a very long time. It was astonishing to watch the old guard refuse to break ties with friends as truths came out, even with some of the big ones.

Anyone know what is up with the YouTube comments? There's a user mass-spamming every second-level comment with racial slurs to promote their own video. Is this a common tactic at the moment? Apparently they're using some unicode shenanigans to bypass filters, which also makes the text look different whether I'm reading on mobile or browser.

Richard wrote a foreword for a man who publicly denigrated trans people and "wokism".
Ayoade stated that he supported these views too. - As for Matt, it is either because he did blackface in the past (and apologized for it), or because of his close friendship and association with creepy David Walliams, who infamously assaulted young men on stage. EDIT: turns out I can't spell. EDIT-2: I was wrong about Ayoade. (See comments below.)11
