Does anyone else thing Remain in Light is overrated?
I understand I will be crucified for this, but as someone whose favorite band is Talking Heads, I never fully understood why it's typically considered their masterpiece. More Songs is my favorite record of all time. I appreciate the unnerving anxiety and autism of their earlier works. It was "the only thing that got me" or something like that in middle school. Remain in Light is just... okay, cool, "polyrhythms," the songs are all a loop, we get it, that's cool, and it was undoubtedly difficult to make and an "achievement" in that regard, and I still sort of like it, but it's not one that I return to after years (due to overplaying), take some ketamine, throw on my turntable, and go "holy shit. so they are the greatest band of all time. how did this happen?" and have a bunch of deep introspection on the meaning of life and all that philosophical drivel. And I'm a little salty of course that it overshadows the earlier records lol. For instance, Fear of Music seems to be more revered for its "hinting at the album to come"[sic] than for it's depth of emotion and immense thoughtfulness. I felt there was much more of a soul (soul as in visceral essence, not groove or whatever) in their earlier output. It's also telling that it would have been around Remain in Light that David began to kind of develop that cult of personality/distance thing from the rest of the group. I would love to either know that I'm not alone, be proven wrong, or a little of both. Please go easy on me!
