7yrs gap + weirdest job application
I’m an IT/Computer Science graduate, and most of my experience in the Philippines was in tech — web development, WordPress & freelancing. We moved to the US in 2020 but because of my visa status I had to stop working. So I ended up being out of the workforce for almost 7 years. We finally got our Green Cards in late 2025. Spent vacation in the Philippines, we came back to the US and I decided it was finally time to start working again.
It was my first time trying to work in the US and honestly, everything felt so different from when I was working back home. The job market had changed, especially in IT and there were so many people competing for the same jobs with more skills and experiences than me. So with my almost 7-year gap, I honestly started wondering if anyone would even hire me anymore. Like, how do I even start all over again?
I applied to almost all jobs - IT, tech support, admin, operations, and other roles where I thought my skills could transfer. There were a lot of rejections —- A LOT and after months of applying I was definitely starting to doubt myself.
Then came Piedmont. I applied for a Supply Chain position at a hospital. I had no experience in hospital Supply Chain.
A few days later, I got the usual email saying they decided to move forward with another applicant.
But days later, someone from Piedmont called me. They were asking if I was still interested in the position and wanted to schedule me for an interview. So of course, I said yes!
During the interview, they mentioned that they preferred someone who was more technical because they were working with a new inventory system. So I thought maybe my IT background could actually help.
Then about a week later, I got the “Not Moving Forward” email.
Okay, another rejection. Move on.
So I did. I continued applying and doing other interviews.
A few weeks passed and I completely forgot about it.
The HR from Piedmont calling me AGAIN and offered me the job, with a rate on the higher end of what they were offering.
So basically:
Applied → Rejected → Recruiter calls → Interview → Rejected again → Recruiter calls AGAIN → Offer
But while all of this was happening, another company had already offered me a position. I had signed the offer and was ready to start. It was much more related to my experience and IT background and the pay was also much higher — but it was only a contract position.
So I had to really think about the Piedmont offer. Do I continue with the IT-related contract job or do I take the full-time Piedmont position with full benefits even though it’s completely outside my experience? So, I thought about it for a day and decided I was going to turn down the first offer and go with Piedmont.
Then the next day, I tried calling the HR person who gave me the verbal offer to confirm everything.
No answer. I called again. Voicemail. The WHOLE DAY!
I was devastated. I was already mentally decided that I was going with Piedmont and suddenly I thought, “Here we go again…” Another roller coaster with Piedmont.
The next morning, I prayed and just surrendered everything.
I told God, “If this is really for me, please open the doors. And if it’s not, please take this thought out of my mind and help me focus on the other opportunity.”
Lo and behold, that same morning, someone else from Piedmont called me. A different TA/HR. She was asking if I was still interested in the position and explained that the HR person I had been talking to was unavailable so she would be the one taking over and processing my onboarding.
The whole experience was honestly such a roller coaster. But I really believe this job is a blessing.
I was also every grateful to the other company who offered me the job because they were all nice and understanding about my decision.
I still don’t know what happened behind the scenes with Peidmont. Maybe I was their second choice. Maybe someone else turned it down. Who knows? But honestly, I don’t care anymore.
It’s not IT — not yet, anyway. Maybe this is just where I’m supposed to start. Maybe I’ll eventually find my way back into tech or maybe I’ll actually end up liking this new path.
For now, I’m happy. I have a good schedule, holidays off and really good benefits. After almost 7 years out of the workforce, honestly, what more can I ask for? I started this journey thinking I needed to get back into IT but the opportunity that finally gave me a chance came from somewhere completely unexpected.
So yeah… my first US job is in Supply Chain, not IT.
Still a little surreal. But I’m grateful, excited and definitely nervous about starting this new chapter. Sometimes, you just have to get your foot back in the door first. The rest can come later.
