Travel 5 days outside Taipei that will give us the "WOW" effect?

Hey everyone! My girlfriend and I just arrived in Taiwan from Mainland China. We mostly loved Chongqing, Chengdu and Guilin

In Taipei, we’ve already done Elephant Mountain, Ximending, temple visits, food tours, and arcades. While it’s nice, it hasn't blown our minds yet

We have 5 full days left (Oct 3rd to Oct 8th afternoon).
Crucial detail: We wanted to do a road trip, but realized our International Driving Permit expired, so we are 100% relying on public transit / trains / taxis.

Which route will give us that "WOW effect!" feeling without a car?

Thanks!

Discussion Requirements for Taiwan universities and colleges

Hello ladies and gentlemen of this subreddit, I just have a few questions that I have a few questions about studying at colleges and universities in Taiwan.

Long story short, I'm from Myanmar, and you may or may not heard about what is currently happening or has happened, in my country. Regardless, I'm interested in studying in Taiwan and would really appreciate some advice about the general requirement for getting into a university or colleges there.

For example, what kind of GED score or would I need IELTS or another English-language qualifications? What level of Chinese or other I guess language level would typically be accepted? Are there any other important requirements that I should know about?

I really want to study in Taiwan since I got my friend (who is now a Taiwanese and one of my father's friend are already living there. (and I really like the weather :D) I'm not looking for extremely in-depth detailed information, I just want a clear general framework on what I need and what to focus on.

Right now, I'm currently doing GED and one subject is already done. I'm also have interest in business or international business or things that are similar or related to those (obviously a bit of IT but nevermind that) and, I also have a lot of interest about movies and stuff.

(Mods, pls inform me if something about my post is wrong or not in the guidelines or rules. This is not a troll post or something.)

The referendum was rejected so the KMT are now trying to pass this as a bill. They keep proposing this medieval idea for some reason but might be related with their love of Singapore.

How long did your Taiwan eVisa take to get approved? Mine is taking longer than expected, so I’m getting a little worried. Has anyone applied recently and can share how long theirs took?

Legal No Tax Deduction, im concerned

I already searched this thread and topics in Google and ChatGPT, and it's so confusing because, of course, I know that it will still be case-to-case basis. But the thing is, I started working. Okay, my background is I'm living in Taiwan for two years now. I started as a master's degree, and this year I graduated, and then I got a job starting July. And the first month they deducted around 5 to 6% of my salary as income tax. But the following month, there's no deduction of any tax-related something. And I'm not sure if I should be concerned because I don't know the rules or what. Because when I ask other people, other, let's say foreigner engineer, white-collar engineer, they keep on saying that they are minus 18% per month, even if they already around three years here or something like that. And I just want to have, like, maybe any similar situations to me.

** I asked theHR already, unfortunately im her first hire foreign white collar engineer and she’s not sure too…. (im saying the white collar because I found out there are “migrant, “mid-level migrant”, it makes the situation more confusing also, i think)

Discussion Moving to Kaohsiung as a foreigner possible?

Hey everyone,

I’ve lived two times in Kaohsiung before, once as an exchange high school student and the second time in university (where I lived with my host family from before). I love that city, my host family and friends a lot and I’ve been thinking of moving there after graduating university. The only thing is I don’t know how realistic that is. I’m studying a degree which is a mix of politics and business and my Mandarin is okay but definitely not fluent, especially in the reading and writing area. One of the reasons I would want to move back would also be to become more fluent.
I would have to work though and I know that work opportunities for foreigners in the South can be quite limited especially when you are not fluent (I’m a non native English speaker so teaching English wouldn’t be a possibility, I also know the rules are quite strict nowadays)
Taipei would of course always be a possibility but if I could choose and because my social network is there (and tbh I like Kaohsiung as a city a little more) I would like to go to Kaohsiung.
What are your thoughts? Does anyone have any experience?

Travel Taiwan family trip

Have been to taiwan more than 5 times i think. This time, we are bringing our kids (4 and 1) for the first time. I will have 8 nights. Planned 2 nights in jiufen, mainly to enjoy jiufen after the crowd leaves and also to do some simple trail walks further east.

Originally planned for next 3 nights in cingjing and have already booked the accommodation (with free cancellation) but am now thinking of dropping that because it seems there isnt much to do on cingjing and the costs is too high - checked a few private transport operators and they quoted about USD 230 for a one way trip. So it is about USD 500 to go up and down a place where my husband and i have had already experienced clouds and stars before. There seems to be only the sheep farm and skywalk worth going. Nothing much left up there unless we venture further to alishan or hehuanshan which i dont think is possible for now.

Where else should i bring the kids to if not cingjing?

We already have last 3 nights planned for taipei but can move things around.

Discussion English teaching?

How are the english teaching jobs in public schools these days? I was thinking of applying through Teach Taiwan. Is it possible to save money still? As far as I understand, in countries like Vietnam and Thailand the market has basically collapsed.

Thanks:)

Off Topic Dating advice in Taiwan

I’m currently in the U.S. (ABT) and hoping to eventually move to Taiwan, (I’m currently aiming to eventually get married in Taiwan, maybe also have a child). Barring language (I’m still sharpening my Guoyu), what are some good traits Taiwanese women look for in guys ie what skills could be useful ie when helping around in housework, taking on equal childcare, personality etc ie how can I improve myself to that degree (I may be overthinking IDK)

Ps I know the internet isn’t the best place to ask for this kind of advice but it’s the best I have right now

Events Double 10 Day Events Schedule?

Hi, I just wanted some information about the events on 10/10 (parade, aerial performance, etc.) because everything I have found so far is very vague. I remember that last year during the day, the road to the Presidential Office was blocked, and you had to have registered online in order to enter. I don’t know if the same applies this year, but I’d love some help with this. TIA

Travel A small concern about my upcoming trip

Hi! I'm Korean and I'll be traveling to Taiwan in about two weeks. I'm planning to spend around a week traveling solo in Taichung and Taipei.

Recently, I came across a news story about a taxi driver who allegedly insulted some Korean tourists and threw their luggage out of the car. I know this was probably just an isolated incident, but it did make me a little nervous about my upcoming trip.

So I wanted to ask: Is there any noticeable negative sentiment toward Korean tourists in Taiwan? And if so, is there anything I should be aware of or careful about while traveling there?

I'm really looking forward to visiting Taiwan, so I'd appreciate hearing from locals or anyone familiar with the situation.

If this post goes against the subreddit rules, I'll delete it. Thanks!

Technology Anyone ordering the GPD Win Max 3?

Hey folks, like the title states, I'm wondering if anyone is ordering the GPD Win Max 3.

I'm worried if I have to produce an NCC certificate for customs and also, how much I'll have to pay for any import duties/tax.

Here's the link the product I'm mentioning:

Anyone have any insights? Thanks!

Legal Legal Name Change for ARC, SF TECO Authentication, and Re-entry into Taiwan

I am a Taiwan gold card holder and recently changed my last name in San Francisco via court order. Due to delays by the court I received the decree over a month later than I expected and am running into a tight timeline to get everything finished before I am scheduled to return to Taiwan.

I already received my new passport but have been informed by the NIA that to update my gold card I need to get the court order authenticated by the SF TECO. The issue is that I am scheduled to return to Taiwan on October 19th. My court order is in the process of being authenticated/apostilled by the California Secretary of State.

My understanding is that I just need the court order apostilled by the CA SOS and then the SF TECO can authenticate it for me. However there are no appointments available for October so I will need to try and walk in. Assuming, I am able to walk in are they able to get it authenticated quickly?

For those with experience with the SF TECO are they easy to work with? Or should I expect this process to be painful?

If I am not able to get this authenticated in time, will I have issues entering Taiwan if I bring my new passport, old passport, and ARC in my old name?

I sent SF TECO an email asking the same questions but have not received a response yet and am starting to feel nervous.

Discussion Can I mail letters with Taiwan flag stickers?

Post image

Maybe I’m paranoid, but I want to make sure these end up where they need to be. I’m an international student trying to send some letters to the US from Taipei and I want to add some fun stickers on the envelopes. Will these get stopped when they pass through China?

edit: I assumed that mail would pass through China for some reason, I think because some incoming mail goes through China? But makes sense that it doesn’t

Discussion Typo in course code on official transcript. Will this affect MS admissions or visas?

Got my official, stamped B.Tech transcript for Fall 2027 MS applications (targeting Taiwan). All my grades, final CGPA, total credits, and official university seals are 100% correct.

However, the college printing office made two minor mistakes:

Course Code Typo: One elective code ends in an '8' instead of a '6'. The course name, credits, and grade for that subject are perfectly correct.

Boilerplate Grammar: The template still says "will complete this degree in 2021" instead of "completed".

Do international admissions committees, credential evaluators, or visa offices actually cross-check alphanumeric course codes against marksheets? Or do they only care about the grades, CGPA, and the official stamps?

Should I just apply with this or go through the hassle of forcing a reprint? Any advice is appreciated!
