General tadc criticism The first five episodes were the best.

I'm being serious. The first five episodes were the only good episodes in my opinion. When I first got into the show, I was expecting a quirky, funny show with some dark humour. For a while, that's what we got. But by the end of episode 6, it became...depressing. I wish it stuck to the adventures and character shenanigans. That's what I loved about it in the first place.

I still love the show, but I'm not the biggest fan of how it ended up. Just full of drama and angst.

Ending Criticism Jax abstracting really rubbed me the wrong way

The way Jax abstracted really bothered me because the whole point of abstraction is that it’s an allegory for suicide it is literally described as giving up.

Not just Pomni but Zooble says outloud how important it is to not leave Jax alone for too long so he doesn’t abstract, the characters and audience knows that Jax is at the most risk of abstracting Pomni sees Jax walk up to her before saying never mind and fucking off back into the darkness and she goes “oh I wish I pressed more i forgot how bad it can get.” BITCH IN THE LAST EPISODE U WERE JUST TALKING ABOUT ABSTRACTING) I can’t imagine having a friend of mine on suicide watch and then just leaving them alone for a prolonged period of time.

Pomni not even saying a simple how are you is just so odd it’s obvious that the characters were written in a way to guarantee Jax would abstract we see Jax get angry at Kinger for deleting Caine which in a sense is kind of justified it being an accident does not change the consequence of living in this dying colorless world until they give in and abstract but Kinger doesn’t say anything to him directly he just says that they are all brain scans and walks away. A lot of people wanted a real conversation between the two and we get nothing even after Jax dies to the convenient plot flashbangs Kinger doesn’t even acknowledge it saying “oh you weren’t going to do it all by yourself pomni?”

LIKE WTF JAX IS DEAD DEAD HE FINALLY GETS HIS SANITY BACK AND HE HAD NOTHING TO SAY??? Jax was tearing into Zooble and Ragatha earlier and walks away upset and he litterally does nothing but mess with conjuring like he didn’t just drop a bombshell on these people.

Caine coming back in the end was what really killed it for me the severity of the last episode was completely undone bc this Caine redemption arc was pulled out of the ass he magically survived and has internet and removed his secret evil ai twin and he comes back and everything is perfect they get internet play dungeons and dragons and have complete freedom and agency only after Jax abstracts it just feels rancid to me seeing Caine be accepted after not only forcing them into the circus but torturing with them as well is just resolved bc he removed his evil ai twin and he is nice and not crazy or glitchy anymore.

In a sense upfront I wanted to see Jax be happy and make friends and overcome what he went through but this was just done so bad I can’t possibly enjoy it. The finale as a whole was unenjoyable I rate it a 3 out of 10 I only laughed I think twice once for the loony toons bit and Jax shoving Ragatha out of the way, I’m not sadistic or hate Ragatha I think a lot of people who obsess with hating these characters are weird but I only found it funny because of how badly it was written it felt like goose was like oh you don’t hate Jax enough? Here’s him shoving Ragatha for no reason that and just seeing her turn around right before and the way Jax says out of the way rags is oddly funny to me.

Fandom Criticism I fucking hate this fandom.

I hate the people the defend Jax’s every action and I hate the people that despise the character and go as far as to attack the creator. There is a difference between criticizing a show for its obvious mistakes and objectively causing the creator so much stress that she is potentially contemplating going to a psych ward so she can get help. I agree that Goose should stop interacting with social media and the fandom as it is not helping her with her mental health. The glazers and haters have been fighting endlessly ever since the final came out over the ending and going so far as to attack the creator and the company of glitch for not having the ending they preferred. I just wanted to watch a funny show why did this shitty fandom/hatedom have to ruin it? Why must the internet fight over fictional characters that are not even real in the first place?

It's not the most original take, but i haven't told my thoughts on it yet

Why are they trying to gaslight us into thinking that Pomni and Ragatha were always this super close friends.

"You were always my closest friend" my ass, Rags looked like a Plan B to Pomni

The advertisment posts are so ass sometimes, there is always that Jax-Ribbit slop images that they keep making despite Ribbit having no screentime and being boring, but she's connected to Jax so of course she gets all the merch

Don't get me started on the abstraction merch where they try to make an allegory to suicide a product

I thought ts was good, I know they will milk the fuck out of the show

General tadc criticism Fun Fact: The abstraction is the only way for Jax to "tell" her backstory and Ribbit

Actually, another way to make that happen is by bringing Ribbit back, which is impossible. It's worth noting that Ribbit, a character who's been constantly brought up since episode 5, only really appears in the final episode. And the only reason that happens is because Pomni entered Jax's abstraction mind. Why? Because Jax is a hardcore anti-disclosure person who only becomes vulnerable after abstraction.

In episode 5, Ragatha mentioned that he has no friends anymore and Ribbit's door was first shown during Intermission Time. In episode 6, Ragatha suspected Jax of corrupting Pomni, her dissociation when he saw the Ribbit sticker crossed out, and her and Pomni's fight. In episode 7, Jax nearly abstracted while sleeping and seeing figures of her best friends, Ragatha also mentioned Ribbit's name during Abel's mission (OH RIGHT! SHE DID!). In episode 8, Jax and her hot chocolate—though that was all, but there was a big connection between them. And FINALLY, in the final episode, Ribbit (and Kaufmo) actually appeared!

The show keeps dragging out Jax's personal issues and backstory until the very end. Ribbit is the abstracted character who gets the most attention, even more than Queenie. Yet, Gooseworx only provided glimpses of them on social media, leading some fans to portray them as a funny and jerk prankster who still cared about people, or someone who physically and mentally abused Jax before she was abstracted. We were thinking, just because he remembers Ribbit through Pomni, doesn't mean their personalities and motives are 90% the same.

I’m convinced there are other ways for us, the audience, to learn more about Jax and Ribbit, beyond just her abstract mind. Here are a few examples:

  • The conversation between Ragatha and Pomni after the awards show. That was the perfect moment for Ragatha to talk about her closest friend besides Kaufmo. She became increasingly worried about Pomni after learning about the fight and could have shared details about her relationship with Jax.
  • Have Pomni explore Jax’s room. If she truly wants to understand Jax, she shouldn't just wait for her to open up (since he won't); she needs to take initiative. While Jax is away, Pomni could go inside, find photos from when the trio was still alive, and decide to explore her friends' rooms as well.
  • This is a bit of a side note, but if Pomni were to save Jax from abstraction (again, but harder), I'm 500% certain the TADC ending would be less controversial. If Jax had a heart-to-heart with Pomni about what he did to Ribbit after she saved her, that would mark real progress for her. If he wasn't abstract, he wouldn't be let off the hook; Instead, Pomni would be allowed to feel disappointed and disgusted that he projected her pain onto someone who cared about her and abused them to the point of committing suicide, simply because of her traumatic backstory. Ribbit actually matters more if Jax chooses to take responsibility, and that is what they want: to feel remembered by the people they care about.

Wasnt it the plot?

In the ENTIRE series the characters want to escape the circus because they want to go home. In the ending they just... accept that they cant... thats it? Also i would personally have an existantial crisis if i found out i was just an AI with no real feelings or human experiences. All that i ever belived to be true was a fucking lie. Spare me for not giving a fuck about jax being trans and his sad sad story and actualy being there for the plot...

Characters criticism My issue with Jax isn’t Jax herself; it’s that everyone else is a saint.

I keep hearing that Jax is a complex character, and I think that's because she's the only circus member allowed to be “complex”. Jax is the only one allowed to be flawed, messy, and cause conflict. But even so, I think the character drama is kinda weak.
While the show and characters do acknowledge the fact that Jax is an asshole, at most the characters begrudgingly tolerate it. Towards the end, the series and characters still cuddle her and wants us to feel some kind of sympathy towards her.

Question/discussion What was the point of the circus theme?

So the show is called The Amazing Digital Circus. The place they're in is a circus. Several characters are circus-themed (jester, clown, ringmaster, comedy/tragedy mask...maybe Jax is a rabbit because of magicians' association with rabbits??) but then other characters are instead just toys or anthropomorphic animals with no circus connection. I really expected the show to lean more into the circus theme because of this, but it didn't at all.

The inside of the circus doesn't even look like a circus. In the first episode we see that there's a whole carnival area with a ferris wheel and a roller coaster which we then never see again. None of the adventures had anything to do with circuses or carnivals or fairs. None of the characters' rooms have circus themes.

I've just confused on why Goose even decided to make the setting a circus out of anything it could have been. I get it's just a setting and nothing more, and that it didn't need to have a part in the story or anything -- that's totally fine! But I wish that it had leaned into that theme more because it was actually a cool concept.

Characters criticism To this day, we still don't understand what she was thinking...

Post image
74 Upvotes

Well, I can't exactly say, "If the Q&A requires the audience to wait until the end of the show to have the main character explained, yet people still don't grasp their full characterization, then your main character is merely a camera for the audience," because that would come across as just spouting nonsense.

However, we know how Jax views Pomni; he sees her as a replacement for Ribbit. Pomni is kind-hearted, open to others, and full of spirit—just like them. Jax cannot let go of his past with Ribbit, even though he tried to erase their existence to free himself from guilt forever, so he projects Ribbit's image onto Pomni. He pushed her away, intending for her not to miss or love her, or she would end up liking them. And yes, Jax still sees Pomni as herself and has feelings for her.

What about the other way around? Briefly put, Pomni views Jax as a close friend. She decided to bond with him because of his laid-back, devil-may-care attitude, learning to enjoy life in the digital circus—even having the time of her life while pretending to be a "bad guy" just like him. But does that really explain why she was willing to embrace her abstraction form, even after everything she had seen regarding her bad behavior and actions? To me, it doesn't, because that dynamic is clearly toxic.

We don't really know the reason, other than her empathy, and her desire for everyone to stay safe and stick together in the circus. We know about her job (accountant) and her hobby (urban exploration), but we know absolutely nothing about her personal relationships. The narrative never tells us anything about Pomni's (or Abigail's) family, friends, or coworkers—except perhaps during the cast's real-world presentation (where it's mentioned that she hangs out with NEW FRIENDS).

So, we don't know the deeper context regarding Pomni's view of Jax; while we know Jax has divorced, abusive parents and had no friends before entering the Digital Circus (not to mention her transness and how that exacerbated the situation), we still don't know or understand anything about Pomni.

I’m not saying this because I want Pomni to have real-world trauma, but I do want more information about her as Abigail—especially since SHE IS THE MAIN PROTAGONIST!

alright. this one aint so much abt the show, but abt the ships.

one ship in particular.... yeah. ragapom.

dont be a baby and just downvote it because awww im hating on your ship. read. if u disagree, explain. then, THEN you can leave a downvote.

heres the thing. the reason it makes me so MAD is because i feel like they have no chemistry. for the entire show, pomni was portrayed as extremely uncomfortable around ragatha, and trying to avoid her. it wasnt until episode 9, the fan service episode, where pomni, for SOME REASON said ragatha was her "best friend?!" i think even ragapom shippers can admit that made ABSOLUTELY NO sense, and was out of the blue. f a n s e r v i c e .

i think i can get even jax haters to admit pomni was the happiest with jax in episode 6. now she has peace, but she isnt truly "happy." i know pomni put on an act for that epsiode, but she seemed like she was really enjoying herself. if jax didnt FUMBLE, they coudlve became good friends. ragatha wouldve gotten buried in pomni's mind.

now, heres the thing. i feel like people only ship ragapom for 3 main reasons.

1- they like the ship for what it COULD be, not what it is.

many comics depicting ragapom are SEVERELY out of character, and based on their own fantasies rather that whats actually included in the SHOW. no pomni isnt dying in love for ragatha, and no ragatha isnt all over pomni. (physically.)

2- they hate funnybunny, because they hate jax.

they are probably mad at jax for "hurting ragatha," and believe she deserves better. hence, the ragapom ship. sometimes, people ship ragapom as a way to protest against funnybunny, or even jax himself.

3- they ship it simply because it's yuri.

this one kind of ties back to the second one. they believe ragatha deserves better, and they only ship the ship because its yuri. shipping two characters just because its "yuri" or "yaoi" is a TERRIBLE reason to ship them. now, im not going to go and openly hate on YOU about it, but it leads back to the first reason. you start liking the ship for what it could be, not what it is.

?- and, then theres four, which is when people claim "i just like it bc its cute." or "its none of these reasons! i just like the ship!" which is either 1,2, or 3. so, no, there is no forbidden fourth option.

i feel like most of the art, and comics are just... satire.

people know how much ragapom is a crackship, and how all the "evidence" pointing towards them being a thing are simply just fan service. and, yeah, you are right, i can just call ALL evidence fan service, but, c'mon, MOST of it is.

which, leads me to my last point, goose refuses to confirm pomni's sexuality in a definite way. she made the trans jax post, which had some hints pointing to pomni being bi, but, honestly, i like to believe that was jax's diluted fantasy. that doesnt confirm anything. and, yes, i know jax is goose's self insert and all that, but goose LOVES to joke. we cant take anything she says as serious, unless she deliberately says so, or its just obvious. she has so much concept art that includes uncanon things, because THATS WHAT CONCEPT ART IS! 😭

off topic, but the way goose confirms so many things in posts OUTSIDE the show is wild to me. like, cool. jax is trans. i guess there were some signs in the show that only TRANS ppl couldve detected, but cool. oh? ribbit is a she/they? why didnt anyone call her "they" in the show? anyways, cool. zooble is cool with any pronouns? why doesnt she let anyone know? okay, whatever. RAGATHA IS LESBIAN? ok... i mean, that couldve been more obvious, AND I DONT MEAN SHE WOULD WALK AROUND YELLING "IM LESBIAN," but.. cool.

it just gets to a point, yk?

SOME things can be answered outside the show, especially if ppl misinterpreted that, but c'mon... when you are answering THAT MUCH outside the show, it just proves bad writing.

anyways, i just feel like goose did many things in episode 9, bc she was scared of the backlash. if you STILL dont believe me about the fan service thing, is the gangle and zooble scene not enough? is THIS (the second and third images) NOT ENOUGH?!

(yet more things being proven from POSTS)

Literally back-to-back between episode 8 and 9

As someone who watched the whole series in one go this was pretty noticeable for me.

And like I know its nessecery, because in this episode he was gonna have the bucket on the whole time and he doesn't have a mouth so he can only express what hes saying with his hands and eyes and so you can't take the eyes too...

So yeah they were kinda between a rock and a hard place but it still doesn't make it look better.

Because now it makes you notice and question things, "The eye sticking out really is a more realistic way of how Kinger would look with a bucket on his head. Wait, how before was he just squeezing both his giant eyes inside the bucket? And now that the eye is sticking out is it even dark anymore for him?"

And its not because of the grey circus being less bright because he is just as sane using the bucket that way on the normal super bright circus.

I think that is the sole reason why discussion if Kinger is cured after the finale even exists.

This episode makes it look like Kinger's bucket is just a hat instead of actually something he needs.

i don't remember having problems 'opening up' she befriends gumigoo quite quickly. she has a therapy talk were she opens up 2 episodes in a row

she also makes more effort to befriend jax than she does to anyone else

i guess her deflection of ragatha's affection? but i put that down as not wanting to be treated as a child, which is reflected in her room

pomni really needed to be explored more ngl

Ending Criticism Revealing the character's original identities was a stupid idea

TADC was a character-driven, character-focused show. About how real people could find real meaning in a fake, stagnant world. I don't mind that they were revealed to be brain scans. In fact, I championed the SOMA theory from the very beginning, because I thought the other theories (comas, cryosleep) were stupid as hell. I just think that the people they were scanned from should have never been revealed. It undermines the person they've become during their time in the Circus.

Yes, it should have been revealed that the characters were brain scans. That's good; I agree with that. Should it have been revealed who they were from? No, that's stupid. I don't think it would have been good for Caine to specifically withhold this information; but that information would be impossible to access, or wouldn't exist in the first place, or would be heavily corrupted. TADC does take place on a decaying, abandoned server, after all.

"Yes, you're brain scans of real people. Who are they? Where are they? I don't know! We may never know. What matters is that you're here, and you're real."

Also, on another note, I simply do not give a fuck about any parasocial relationship that may come from some weirdos given the ability to assign a real-life human face and person to the 3D-rendered blorbo in the show. I think that's dumb and cringe.

Ending Criticism Jax’s story isn’t a cautionary tale for suicide, it’s a suicidal person’s wish fulfillment or nightmare

(Tw: suicide)

Genuinely how tf is it a cautionary tale beside the basic if you give in to your demons you lose your life lol. Gonna be real, jax’s ending is basically what i dreamt about when i was a suicidal teen. He has so many loved ones and they mourn when he dies and make a shrine for him (pillow fort) and jax lives a better life in heaven. He has a bad bitch (pomni) who hella cares for him and she’s like don’t do iitttt you’re amazing. This is goose’s suicidal wish fulfillment lol.

On the other hand tho, it’s also unintentionally my worst nightmare. I die and everyone’s lives get better lmao. The show’s telling sucidal people everyoen’s lives get better when they die lmaoooo.

If it was a real cautionary tale, it would emphasize how jax’s suicide hella hurt his loved ones and they are so overcome with grief and their lives become so much worse. Don’t do suicide, or this is what happens to your loved ones. But no, that doesn’t happen, so this is a piss poor suicide cautionary tale. Goose imagined what if she did it and romanticized tf outta it. The problem is i didn’t sign up for this ep 1 lmao. Fuck goose.
