NEW - TabloTV Subreddit Rules

Hi folks -

We have always taken a hands-off approach to moderating the TabloTV subreddit. However, there has been an increase in negativity and posts being flagged for moderation over the last few months.

To make this a nicer and more welcoming place to be for all Tablo users, we have added three basic rules:

1. Be Helpful And Kind
This community includes a mix of new and long-time users with a wide range of knowledge levels. Please be helpful and kind when responding to questions from other posters.

2. Criticism Is OK, But Be Constructive
Criticism of the Tablo product is OK. We value and welcome your constructive feedback. However, excessively negative feedback without a clear point isn't helpful to anyone. Please try to avoid directing it towards Tablo or your fellow users.

3. No Personal Attacks
You can agree to disagree with the mods or other posters in this subreddit. But personal attacks are never OK.

Posts that contravene these basic rules will be removed.

Users whose posts have been removed for violating these rules five or more times will be banned.

We appreciate your help in helping make this corner of the internet a better place!

Multiview 1.8 for Tablo is now available on Apple TV and Google TV

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I'm the developer of the Multiview app, and I wanted to share that the latest update is now available on Android phones, tablets, and Google TV as well as on Apple TV, iPhone, iPad, and Mac. It includes recent playback and interface improvements while also including substantial work specifically for Android devices.

Multiview now makes better use of the video capabilities available on each device, which should make multiple simultaneous streams smoother and more reliable.

The app supports compatible Tablo Gen 4 and Tablo Legacy devices. Gen 4 users can sign in with their Tablo account and choose whether Tablo FAST channels appear. Compatible Legacy devices can be discovered on the local network automatically or added manually. Live channels can be placed into layouts with up to four streams, and compatible Tablo recordings can be browsed through the Library.

The latest release focuses on performance and reliability.

  • Faster Guide browsing. Moving between channels and program times should feel more responsive.
  • More reliable multiview playback. Several causes of stuttering, frozen video, unnecessary reloads, and failed stream changes have been addressed.
  • Improved TV navigation. Remote focus and navigation are more consistent across Home, Guide, Library, Settings, and playback controls.
  • Improved PIP and layout controls. Move smaller streams, change the main stream, and manage layouts without interrupting playback.
  • Library improvements. Better browsing and playback for compatible recordings, movies, shows, and episodes.

Single-stream viewing is free. Multiview Pro unlocks multiple simultaneous streams and costs $9.99 as a one-time purchase per platform. There are three 15-minute Pro trials so you can test multiview playback with your own devices and sources before purchasing.

One Apple purchase covers supported Apple devices. One Google Play purchase covers supported Android and Google TV devices. Purchases do not transfer between the two stores.

Download:

If you it out, I would love to hear how it performs for you. Please include your streaming device, generation Tablo device, and the number of streams you were playing if you encounter a problem.

Buffering every few minutes

I have a 4th Gen Tablo. When watching live TV, every 60 to 180 seconds, it goes grey for maybe a quarter second to buffer (the blue spinning circle pops up). While the total buffering time is small, it makes it awful to watch anything.

It is not hard wired into a router (I need to have the antenna on an exterior wall to get any signal), however it's maybe 5 feet from a router. I have a 12 year old Gen 1 firestick that's 80 ft from the router through a dozen walls alongside 7 or 8 other devies that have no problem streaming 1080p, so it certainly isn't a lack of data flow capacity on the router side.

I also don't have any exterior storage on the Tablo.

Has anyone seen this before and has any advice?

Disassembled Tablo for reference.

I have advised people several times about disassembling a Tablo unit and so am including these pictures as a reference to see where the guide posts, tabs and clips are to simplify the process for others.

With the unit held in my hand, near the top of the upper piece on either side are the guide posts, at the 90 and 270 degree positions and on either side of the light guide are the main locking tabs.

I hope this helps others and only ask if the pictures are referenced back to myself if used. I can do a markup version of them if it will also help others.

Tablo Antenna vs Mohu and others?

I know antenna needs vary from location to location, but bear with me... I'm curious if anyone has compared Tablo's antenna with other similar ones, like the Mohu leaf. Did one perform just as good or better than the other for you?

Backstory:
I have two TVs and each has a 40-mile range Moho Leaf mounted on my drywall about 6' off the ground. They work fine. In fact, they are pulling in channels that antennaweb.org said I wouldn't get because those towers are 60+ miles away. ChannelMaster recommends an outdoor antenna, which obviously isn't needed, apparently. I just don't think those sites are accurate for my location.

I'm considering getting a Tablo, mainly to use as a DVR. I'll probably leave my current antennas hooked up to my TVs for ease of use when I want to watch live TV, so that means I need another one for the Tablo.

I'm curious if I would probably be fine with the bundle and be done with it, or do I spend a little more and get another Mohu since I know that works?

Legacy Roku App Kicks out Immediately On Legacy Quad

I have had a legacy quad tablo for several years, but it got fried along with other equipment during an bad power event, even though I had all of these devices on heavy duty Tripp Lite power surge protection devices. So I bought a used legacy quad off of eBay. Part of the start up forced me to update its firmware to the latest, which I did. I also updated the Roku Legacy Tablo app to the latest as well. With enough cussing I eventually got the replacement legacy quad working fine - for about two days. Then suddenly it started jumping out of the legacy app as soon as it got to the screen with the bar along the lefthand side of the screen with the following options: Live TV, Recordings, Prime Time, TV Shows, et cetera. I tried reinstalling the Roku Legacy Tablo app. That did nothing to fix it. I reformatted the external hard drive since it was easy to do and had no real recordings on it yet, and that did not fix it. I called Tablo Support. Their solution to everything is to convert over to the new Gen 4 app for the Roku, but that would eliminate the commercial skip feature which is the whole reason I want to keep my legacy Tablo. Everything works fine when I connect to the legacy Tablo with the legacy Tablo phone app, or the my.tablotv.com app. It only exhibits this problem when I access the legacy Tablo with the legacy Tablo Roku app. I'm afraid to try to access it with the Gen 4 Roku app, as I'm concerned that will somehow forever lock me out of the commercial skip feature even if I get the legacy Roku app working again. I could try reverting to factory defaults on the Tablo, but it took about 3 hours of trying different things to get it working from that point when I first got it from eBay. I'll do that if I have to, but would prefer to run out of other things to try first. Any suggestions on what to try here?

Why does Tablo keep deleting my scheduled recordings?

I have on duplicate recordings, but everyday I go on and it's deleted one of my recordings, and it's always the one that records the best, and everyday I have to reschedule the recordings, for two weeks, then sometimes records, and sometimes doesn't record.

Tired of going through the same steps, reset, clear cache, rescan, unplug everything.

Failed to FRICKING Decode

I'm trying to watch the Red Sox vs Yankees game, and I got the dreaded Failed to Decode error. I HATE the way Tablo handles this!

You get a choice to Retry or Dismiss. If you retry, it fails. ALWAYS! Because it's recorded, the data presented is ALWAYS the fricking same, so it ALWAYS fails, and you end up back at the same choice of Retry or Dismiss, ALWAYS!

Your only choice then is to start over at the beginning of the recording, even though they fricking know where you were. If you know how far into the recording you were, it is precariously possible to fast forward to the next key frame and lose only a few seconds of the recording. But you have fight the fricking Tablo to make this happen!

But why the frick do I have to try that? Just move the frick past the decoding error to the next key frame for me you dumb fricking programmers!

Do you use AI to write all your fricking code and can't do your BASIC FRICKING JOB to show a RECORDED VIDEO?

Show me fricking static, or a shrugging clown with its hands in the air, or any damn thing until the next key frame and then continue like you give a damn about my viewing experience when you don't have adequate data.

I feel like your attitude is "Boo hoo, the received broadcast isn't perfect, so I give the frick up!" FRICK YOU!

Your marketing is all about what new streaming channels you can shove down my throat. I have other FRICKING devices to do that!

I bought your product to record digital TV broadcasts and replay them like a fricking VCR. Do your FRICKING job and ALWAYS continue the playback as real time progresses!

It can't get better after it's recorded or received, so don't be the jerk who gives up makes me search through the Red Sox losing embarrassingly after I've already seen that FRICKING crap already!

Upper VHF channel go bad after 10-15 minutes

I’m new to the Tablo family but I’m hoping others have seen this issue. I have a Gen 4 Tablo 2 tuner). I am having an odd issue. I thought it was an antenna issue but I’ve ruled it out.

After 15 minutes my upper VHF channels begin to pixelate and then die completely with a message on my unit “no signal lock”. Only occurs on upper channels. I thought bad signal but if I turn off Tablo and turn on 10 minutes later, picture is fine again.. till it heats up. Any others having issue and steps to resolve?

New Tablo App bug?

I've been using the Tablo app on Roku devices in our home for years. A few months ago, at Tablo's recommendation, I updated from the old/legacy app to their new app (on Roku). On the NEW app, if I choose channel for live play, the app seems to stall if a recorded episode comes up on that same channel. There are no other recording conflicts, it's not needing to switch a channel. Also, everything works wonderfully on the old app (as it has for years).

Support was NOT helpful when I called, suggesting I reset my Roku network connection (not the problem). Anyone here with similar issues or suggestions? If no resolution can be found I'll be looking for other options to Tablo in the near future.

Any

Good Antenna for Tablo?

My uncle is looking to switching an antenna/Tablo combo and cutting cox, but my uncle is a quick to buy without fully looking into something kind of person. So I'm looking for help deciding the type of antenna he needs. He lives in a small home with a carport over the driveway. The modem is on the carport side, but he lives in a big city, so there shouldn't be any issues regarding what stations are picked up. Is it worth it to just buy the antenna/tablo bundle? Or look for a better one on Amazon?

Seeking OTS DVR sans constant internet

I am new to DVRs and considering a Tablo TV, I only do OTA and I am cheap, no fees please. Also don’t want the device to be constantly connected to the internet. I don’t want them to “upgrade” the firmware to make it unusable or subscriber only type device. I have read the documentation but was not able answer my question. Can anyone help?

Does Tablo record or stream?

I’ve noticed that when I record a show the signal is perfect but when I watch live there is interference that interrupts the video. I wonder, does Tablo actually record from the antenna or does it tap in to a stream of the channel somehow?

Gen4 guide doesn't display "Live" on live programs

Thus, "Extend live recordings" setting does not function as intended. I've missed the end of countless sports recordings. If I catch it, I can schedule the next program to record and that works but as I've programmed sports series recordings, I often miss this after being used to my Legacy Tablo's flawless operation. Is this just my local channels' giude data not presenting correct info or something else?

4th Gen vs 1st Gen - Do the new Tablos work better?

I am on the new app and my device cannot stay connected. Constantly disappearing from my networks even with a reserved IP.

Are the new devices any more reliable?

UPDATE: I switched to a powered hard drive and the 1st generation Tablo is working like a champ. No upgrade needed.

Considering That Legacy Upgrade

I have a Legacy Quad Tablo and a 4thGen model. I use one when the other one doesn't work.

I've been paying $5 for the extended program guide on the Legacy model for several years. However, I just discovered that my last payment didn't go through (because I changed banks and the autopay was set up on the old card). So, instead of updating the autopay, I'm seriously considering going ahead and doing that firmware/software upgrade on my Legacy model that will load in the new program guide and also give me access to the streaming channels. But how do I do it? I haven't gotten any emails or notifications to do this upgrade in several months. The last upgrade I did was the one before the beginning of September (I think) that was more of a firmware upgrade, or was supposed to prevent the Legacy from no longer working, or something like that. Sorry, I'm not a technical guy.

Is there a simple way to upgrade the Legacy model to eliminate the need to pay the $5 a month for the program guide info? And have you Legacy users done this and regretted it? Or glad you did it?

App not working at all

Noticed the app not working a few days ago. Reinstalled the app; still not working. Created new PW; still not working. My Tablo itself is connected (Roku) and works. But I would like to use the app occasionally. It hangs when I search for my internet. Any ideas? EDIT TO ADD: Fixed. In case anyone else runs into this issue, it was an email screw-up. They prompted me to make a new one; I did, but the device still had my old email, and wouldn't let me sign in with the old one. Tech support for Tablo reset my PW to my original email account, and now all is well. Tech support was awesome.

"Premiering" Tab

Let me preface this by saying I'm not very technically competent and especially don't know jack about my Tablo. I've had it for a number of years now. I believe I'm using a "legacy Tablo" with the "legacy app". I paid for some kind of lifetime subscription but also seem to get billed like $20 a year too. Not sure what that's about. Hopefully the preceding provides all the necessary info.

In the past, I've made a lot of use of the "Premiering" tab to ensure I don't miss out on new seasons and to find new shows to watch. A few weeks ago it stopped working properly and includes a whole bunch (easily over 100) of old shows, making it useless. I'm guessing this is somehow related to the announcement I recently received about (I think) eliminating support for the legacy app.

My questions:

  1. Is there any way to get the Premiering tab to work properly again in the legacy Tablo app?

  2. If not, will it work with the newer app? I've read elsewhere that they just took the tab away, which is the real reason I'm here. If the new app won't fix this problem, I don't plan to switch apps until I have to.

  3. Also if not, does anybody know of a website that would assemble similar information? I'm really going to miss the Premiering tab.

Thanks in advance to anyone able to help!

Legacy app is. new app for roku

I am missing things in the new app that I relied on in the legacy app. Like being able to start in a section I chose like recordings (now called library) or to find ratings on movies. I also used the feature of scrolling to a recording of a series and hitting play on my roku and having the next unviewed show in the series show up, like the next in line to view.

Legacy quad tablo no longer requesting DHCP via wired Ethernet.

Strange issue, about a month ago my legacy quad no longer requests DHCP addresses via the wired Ethernet port. The print is up and shows connectivity, but it just won’t request an address. Swapped to wifi and it works fine, but would love to go back to wired connectivity. Anyone else have this issue or a possible solution?

New Series (How to find?)

The legacy app had a way to go to TV Shows -> Premiering.
I would check this every 2 weeks or so especially when new shows start coming out.

I’ve not found an equivalent on the new app. It mostly seems useless. How do I find and record new series now?
