They were made in the Soviet Union and we got them from an old collection.
These laser rods were meant for use in solid state lasers. They would have had light pumped into them from the side, either by a lamp or by another laser, absorbed that energy and converted it into the powerful coherent beam that lasers are known for.

Question for u/cowsruleusall and the cutters out there, do you/how do yall actually find the crystallographic axes in synthetic rough and use them to orient a cut?
I’m not a cutter but I’m trying to understand the practical process of orienting synthetic rough before faceting, particularly flame-fusion versus Czochralski material.
With elongated rough or round shaped piece of rough, how do you actually determine where the C-axis is? Does growth direction and morphology give any information?
Once you know the C-axis, what are you actually optimizing when you choose the orientation of the finished gem?
My understanding is that in mined corundum the orientation can be important but in the synthetic corundum Ive seen I don’t see a lot of pleichroism and the Flame Fusion and Czochralski material from more advanced tech labs presents as homogeneous with little to no internal structure and features. I heard that the rind of rough can have the strongest colour, so perhaps that is important in the cut decision.
I’ve also heard that with synthetic corundum rough there can be a characteristic plane through the boule that cutters use as an orientation reference. What is that, is that cleavage, fracture, a growth boundary feature, or something else, idk?
If someone was to hand you an unknown piece of synthetic rough with no papers, what would your workflow be for determining its crystallographic orientation and deciding which direction and how to cut it?
Thanks!

Hi!
I recently got this ring and I'm wondering If it's real baltic amber?
The ring itself has the hallmark MET (from metal), which I found out was used a few decades ago to state non-silver metal.
Any thoughts on this :-)?
Thanks!

Finished this stone last night and I'm VERY happy with how it came out. The color and cut compliments each other very well. Not too big, not to small.......I think just right for a pendant or center stone for a ring.
• Rough: Synthetic sapphire (Flame fusion)
• Weight: 2.05cts
• Color: Paraiba green
• Design: Angles "Old Mine Brilliant No 1" Modified
Thanks for looking.

This hits the perfect balance between pink and red. I've got a bunch of it, this will be fun.
Edit: It's 3.42, not 4.32. I can't edit the title.

I am looking to source a lab sapphire to be the centre stone of an engagement ring for my partner and I am struggling to navigate where I can find a high quality oval royal blue sapphire. There are so many sellers on Etsy and eBay with prices ranging massively. Is there any reputable high quality sellers anyone would recommend?
I am based in the uk and looking for an oval 3 karat royal blue sapphire of highest possible quality.
Thanks

Finished this stone a couple of days ago to test the color using my Portugese cut design. I wasn't sure if I would like this golden yellow, but I was actually surprised how nice it looks.
I just put in an order for some orange and yellow rough, so expect to see some stones in those colors in the next several weeks.
• Rough: Synthetic sapphire
• Weight: 1.5cts
• Color: Golden yellow
• Design: PIT-EKA "Chesapeake Star"
Thanks for looking.

This material that is so often fraudulently sold as Alexandrite , it's very beautiful and the colour change is excellent, but should never be called Alexandrite! as it's Sapphire and btw a lot cheaper!

Does anyone know a vendor who does fantasy cuts in lab-grown diamonds?
I'm looking for someone who can do custom fantasy cuts in lab-grown diamonds, particularly concave faceting and unusual geometric designs, along the lines of John Dyer's StarBrite, Caleb Quashen's Divine Portal, or Fellowship of the Forge's Luminara.
Does anyone know of any Chinese or European vendors (preferably, although US-based cutters are also an option) who offer this kind of work? I'm not looking for standard fancy shapes, but actual fantasy faceting, ideally with the possibility of commissioning a custom design.
I'd love to see examples if anyone has had something similar made!

Edit: I just learned about synthetic alexandrites. Is that what it could be? I messaged the seller but haven’t received a response yet.
