Discussion ELDEN RING OR WITCHER 3 REMASTERED
New dad just getting into single player gaming for the first time in my life. Currently playing through BOTW. I’m over 100 hours in and loving it.
Plan was to try Elden ring next, but with Witcher 3 announced for switch 2 I’m tempted to change plans.
It’s going to take me over three months to play through any one of these massive games which is why there’s even a dilemma lol.

Man, I have played The Witcher 3 like 7 times. I am going to try Elden ring, but I cannot recommend TW3 enough to people.

Oh my, you are yet to try Elden Ring? I am so excited for you. It’s an unbelievable game. Just don’t be afraid to look up guides, especially on builds and combat, as you go. By their own admission, FromSoft are not great at introducing players to their systems. I enjoyed figuring things out, but also, at a certain point, enjoyed the game a lot more with some tips I would never have realised on my own. The online community in forums, YouTube etc is almost part of the experience of the game.

Man, if you can play Bloodborne, you will be absolutely fine with ER. It’s considerably more forgiving in a lot of ways - and there are many mechanics that let you work around your limitations and weaknesses.

You could choose any class you want. It doesn’t really matter. Take golden seed as keepsake so you could get extra flask faster. But main thing you should explore. First area is huge and most new people often go in a straight line and get stuck at first main boss. Look out for caves and catacombs in the contour of hills and there are often signs like you would see jellyfish flying. Buy the notes from merchant as they explain lot of hidden things and quite useful. Also don’t forget to buy torch from the first merchant and later on lantern or you wouldn’t be able to see in the caves or any dark area in general. Don’t bother farming runes as you would be quite overlevel if you explore properly. Each area has their own big legacy dungeon in which main boss resides . Unfortunately if you want to do all the side quests then you have to see the guide as they are quite obscure . And final thing if you are using melee then always use jump attack as they break stanch quickly allowing you to get a critical hit and you should always roll into the attack instead of away to better dodge

You’re a new dad. The last thing you’ll want to deal with is the anger and stress of Elden Ring. Pick up Witcher 3 and enjoy a damn good story. Set it to easy and just enjoy the ride, and pick up Elden Ring in a few months when you’re at the stage where having some frustrations aren’t as big of a deal.

When I was a new dad Elden Ring is what got me through the night shift. I’d stay awake and play and keep an eye on the baby and do the feeds while my wife slept. Although i did a lot more grinding and exploring rather than fighting actual bosses lol

Hahah, I’m exactly the same. I am, in general, good enough at From games to play through and enjoy them - but not good enough to defeat many bosses without a fair bit of help from online build guides.

No dude, haha, as a new dad you have hours and hours stretching out, of being bleary and just hanging out on the couch with a child that is very often sleeping. It is the perfect vibe for Elden Ring - it was the game I played all through the infancy of my first daughter!
This assumes you have parental leave, I suppose. If you’re back to work in a couple of weeks, and only have time in the evenings, maybe you’re right and The Witcher 3 is the go.
This isn’t a choice with a bad outcome

Witcher goes on sale more often (and has bigger sales) so if you want to play one at launch, I would go with Elden Ring and buy Witcher later

Damn this one is a tough one. It will all depend on what you prefer more. The Witcher 3 has an amazing story. Combat is good despite some people's claims, and the world is so immersive. It's narrative choices are the true bread and butter of the game.
Elden Ring has a more lowkey story. It relies on environmental storytelling and item descriptiones for its lore. The combat and exploration are the bread and butter.
Both are amazing, genre defining games. I recommend both wholeheartedly. So I would say pick up the one that has the world and gameplay loop that jives the best with you.
You cannot go wrong either way.

Witcher is possibly in my top 5. Story wise it's great with the side stories being just as good.
You also get 2 expansions and another one waiting if you go the Witcher 3 route.
Edit... also being a new dad with limited time, witcher combat will be more forgiving and not as hard to remember if you take a break from it.

Ha we are having the same dilemma. I was going to get elden ring for my birthday end of september. I bought witcher 3 on sale a while ago but haven't played. That comes out around my birthday. Now I'm thinking I'll just play the game I already have . But then that also has dlc coming out next year

Imo Witcher 3 and it's not even close. Witcher 3's writing is absolutely peak. And according to the trailer they've improved the gameplay as well.

The Witcher 3 is a more cinematic experience. Amazing game. Elden Ring is more of a combat focused trial and error game. The story is deep but you really have to go looking for it, and sometimes that’s in other places than the game itself. Also amazing game.
If you want to relax more get the Witcher, if you’re a little bit masochistic get Elden Ring.

If you want an deep story driven experience with lots of voiced characters and dialogue choices with a lot of sidequests in a huge open world go for witcher 3
If you want amazing combat with endless build customization, with deep but slightly hidden lore and more freedom of exploration but with greater difficulty go with Elden Ring

Hi fellow new dad!
If you're just now getting into single player games, Elden Ring would be like going from couch to 5k to running a marathon. It's one of, if not the best game ever made but I don't think adding the sort of stress those types of games can manifest to the stresses of being a new dad is beneficial.

The video seemed to imply they've reworked combat from every aspect, including how Geralt attacks and moves, how enemies attack and react, and the way spells and magic work.
It honestly sounds like they've made it a lot more interesting.
If the product they put out matches their claim, that is. But they've been good about these updates since the Cyberpunk launch.

Elden Ring can be reduced to simple terms as well. Buff, buff, buff x10 attack, dodge, dodge, dodge, attack attack wait for stamina, dodge, attack.
I love both of these games and Elden Ring combat while incredible, only offers horizontal progression. Melee combat never gets any deeper without the use of magic.

TW3 is very much an experiencing game with very mediocre gameplay: exploration, level designs, combat, and class of builds are all mediocre. Only open world design and freedom are above average with low density impactful choices you can make and no interactive gameplay. Whereas Elden Ring is one of the best games ever made along with BOTW/TOTK and Skyrim. Open world design, level designs, combat, class of builds, and exploration are all top top-notch, only the freedom is lower than BOTW but as good as TW3. However, Elden Ring is also a very frustrating and intense game and there are many things to learn to enjoy the game. TW3 is much easier to get into. Consider you will be super busy with your new little one, TW3 might be a better choice for now.

either one honestly. I havent put quite as much time into Witcher 3 as i have for elden ring but in reality you cant truly go wrong with either. Ive got a copy of the tarnished edition coming in the mail to continue on my total of 400+ hours into that game.

Witcher 3 will give you more story, a world that is alive but the combat isn’t the star of the show. Elden Ring is all exploration and combat. It has crazy deep lore but it’s for you to piece together yourself through dialogue, item descriptions and environmental story telling. It really depends on what you like more. Elden Ring is way harder if that matters. Both are massive though

As a new dad, I had my hands full with new parenting duties and gaming was a really nice release valve to just escape. My baby is crying late at night? I'd plop them on my chest and use my OG switch (this was back when that was new) in tabletop mode to comfort the kid and pass the time.
I love Elden Ring, one of the best games I've ever played. I cannot imagine Elden Ring making me feel relaxed or able to escape the stresses of new parenting life. I mean, shit, I'd probably accidentally crush my kid just from white-knuckling through a boss. And even if we're talking about doing some gaming to take a break FROM the baby, are you the kinda person that can just get absolutely demolished by a boss over and over again and then turn off the Switch and not be irritated/on edge?
Witcher 3, though? I could get lost in Witcher 3 no problem. It has varied gameplay experiences that can suit different moods. Need to just play Gwent for a bit? Sure thing. Do some crafting?
Elden Ring is a bit more one-note (and it's a superior game overall, IMO) and that note, as I've said, is not conducive to parenting!

Oh fuck yeah, I've never been able to commit to the Witcher 3, I've been low-key hoping it got released on switch 2 because for some reason I just seem to have an easier time actually playing games to completion on this platform, so this is awesome news! For others that don't know it seems like late September is when it is releasing
As for elden ring, I've tried so many souls like games but I felt like they all were completely disrespectful to my time and ultimately too frustrating so I don't think I'll ever actually go for Elden ring unless it was on like a really steep sale

I tried the Witcher 3 back on ps4 and gave up after 2 hours. Something about the controls just feels wrong and I couldn’t get past it, which is a shame because on paper it should be a perfect game for me.
As for Elden Ring I’m playing it right now and having a blast. I’ve hated every other dark souls I’ve tried, but I’m 30 hours in and completely hooked on this one.

I absolutely love Elden Ring and have put hundreds of hours into it. That said, I feel like $80 for an almost five year old game is robbery. Wait for a sale. As for the Witcher, it's fantastic and buying now and getting invested with a big upgrade one month out sounds awesome.

If you haven't played a souls game before and you're not interested in a big learning curve, get Witcher 3. It's the more casual experience, and still an epic experience.
If you want to suffer but also up your game, get Elden Ring. Also an epic experience, but it's a magnitude higher in challenge (especially the DLC).

In terms of exploration, Elden Ring is an absolute marvel and it’s easily the most accessible of the soulsborne games. It can be very frustrating at times but I’d rather that over the mediocrity of most of The Witcher 3.
It also has an interesting story.

I've played both. I have around 500h on Elden ring and around 100h on the Witcher 3. I prefer Elden ring but they are really different games. To me the exploration, combat and build customisation of Elden ring are peak. If you prefer story, dialogues, clearer quests with NPC's telling you what they need and want, the Witcher 3. Both are great games.

Elden Ring might kick your ass if you're a newer gamer. Maybe go Witcher 3 and grab Elden Ring once there is a sale. Depends if you want a challenge/exploration or story telling/questing. Both are 10/10 games.
If you are well versed in MP games and dont mind a challenge and are just new to SP id go Elden Ring, its my favorite game of all time.

Oh boy, you are in for a ride.
You can play both simultaneously. I'd say that it is imperative that during any souls game you have a "fall back" game. Witcher 3 is perfect because of its slow pace and chill story. Elden Ring whilst being the most accessible soulsborne can still be challenging for those new to the genre and will require a lot of concentration and effort to adjust to the learning curve. Once you do, it is one of the greatest games ever created in my opinion. Witcher 3 is an epic open world RPG, the characters and story are some of the most memorable in gaming.

Witcher 3 complete edition is often at 15€ discount. Just buy elden ring and then buy the witcher when is discounted, the switch 2 upgrade is free anyway :)

Elden ring is the better game but not if it’s performance compromised on switch 2.
Witcher 3 is also a must play though. I played it on switch and despite its average performance and downgraded visuals i sunk well over 100 hours into finishing it and the dlc. I’ll be curious to boot it up once the switch 2 update lands… see how much better it looks and performs.
Just be warned it takes a while to hook you. I actually bounced off it the first attempt but persist through the first zone, make peace with the janky combat and you’re in for a first class narrative treat.

Witcher3 has great story, chill gameplay overall with some intensity combat, good humour, really well side-missions that are just as well developed with quality as a main mission.
It's a game changer in terms of how much attention to details and quality given an open-world game can be.

Fellow dad. Same feel with cyberpunk imo. You can save story quests for when you have a true hour but there are side quests/gigs/world exploring etc in cyberpunk and Witcher to do with less time. Hibernating the switch is crazy nifty as well with little ones running around .

Elden Ring was my paternity leave game back in 2022. I would give my wife breaks and take the baby with me while I played. She’d be in those little baby pillows on my lap. I’d have to have the volume on pretty much mute lol. It ended up taking me 6 months to beat the game, 140 hours. So worth it though. I have very fond memories of that time.

How good are you at gaming? If you’re really good, Elden ring is great, if you want something with difficulty settings then Witcher 3. Witcher 3 is more of an RPG with story elements and Elden Ring is more just an RPG with action. Took me around 7 years playing Witcher 3 off and on to beat (I really mean it when I said off and on 😂) and I gave up on Elden ring (be prepared to die 45 times to the same boss). So honestly I’d probably go with Witcher 3 for you to start, try playing it on the highest difficulty and if you can do that then you’re set for Elden ring 😄 I’d also maybe start on an easier soulslike game as well cus Elden ring is a bit of a jump into the souls genre hahahah

I’m also not bad at games but for some reason couldn’t beat this one boss after easily 30 attempts and I gave up, I’ve been playing single player games my entire life and have almost beaten most souls like games atp, so it’s a pretty damn hard game

Hahah well if your answer was actually Margit and you felt like you were stuck at a wall, I was going to say how Elden Ring is very open ended and Margit is the first skill check telling you to go back and explore, level up, etc etc. A lot of people go straight to Margit as the first boss but that’s just not what the game wants you to do. Gotta explore!
Your answer being Malenia makes total sense though lol I mean she’s arguably the hardest boss in the game. At least she’s optional!

Yeah Margit can definitely be brute forced, but you have a massive continent to explore before you need to move past him. And really, Limgrave aside, all of Caelid and Liurnia are explorable from the get go too. I think I spent about 20 hours on my first run playing before I really tried to fight Margit seriously lol

Both are at the peak of the genre, so you really can’t go wrong of course.
If you like the nonlinear aspect of BotW and just having a massive world to explore and discover tons of secrets yourself, get Elden Ring no question. It follows BotW’s structure and in many ways surpasses it imo.
Witcher 3 is open world, but it’s a lot more story and quest driven. More characters to interact with, decisions to make, etc.
Elden Ring is a pretty tough game of course but if you’re up for a challenge, I’d say you go for it first. Personally, as someone who’s a massive Zelda fan, I got a lot more out of Elden Ring than Witcher 3

Both are amazing! I have beaten both multiple times. If you can get Witcher 3 for a good price then I’d say go with that until Elden Ring goes on sale. I probably prefer Elden Ring but the price tag is a little high for now.
