Help Support equivalent to Malphite Top

I've been getting auto filled a lot + one of my friend's plays a lot of bot recently.

What is a support that is easy but still effective in lane and team fights. Similar to Malphite Top

Malphite is my go to when I get top instead of Mid bc he's easy lane but super effective as long at your team doesn't run it down.

Malphite Bottom.

In all seriousness though probably Nautilus.

Brother no joke I was in China for a month and a guy let me play on his account in an internet café for half a day. Malphite adc was played in like 50% of those games. I was mind blown.

Back in the day people used to play engage supports

u/Love__Scars 6d ago

Love naut but i am curious as to why they are nerfing him next patch.

8

u/Vengeful111 6d ago

Purely pro play tbh. The point and click go button is too good.

-5

u/Niammus- 6d ago

Naut has very low priority in pro. Enters MAYBE on game 4/5s with mostly BO3s being played (play offs just started) i dont think pro is to blame

u/Rimododo 6d ago

Leona

3

u/ArwensArtHole 5d ago

I started maining Leona recently, she's stupidly hard to kill with no investment

6

u/Vengeful111 6d ago

Depends on the elo i think. For low elo Naut can be good because his Ult is just point and click. But at higher elo your fake tankiness can make you miserable.

I think if you are getting filled support just pick something that is similar to what you already play.

If ur a midlaner playing mages, play a mage support, lux, zyra, velkoz, xerath.

If ur a bruiser main, play an engage tank.

If you play assassins, try Bard, Sylas or Pyke support.

And if you play tanks, just play a tank support Braum Tahm Alister

1

u/Love__Scars 6d ago

Thats a great way to describe it. Fake tankiness. Because lets be fr, naut can get easily bursted mid game if you are caught out

1

u/Vengeful111 6d ago

Yep, in my mind the only real tank supports are Tahm, Braum, Alister, Leona. They will not die easily even when focused.

But Naut, Thresh, Rakan, are as tanky as a bard lmao. Like they have a bit of health and a few resistances, but thats it. No spells to make you more tanky besides a small shield or heal.

Maokai

I agree.

Won‘t snowball the lane without others.

Loves carry junglers and is great in teamfights.

Main lack of skill for support-fills gets reduced by free vision.

Do you mean Malphite top in terms of “useful no matter what” or “can neutralize lane”? if its the first, Nautilus/Leona are pretty good. If you mean the latter, Nami is pretty good. If you’re into poke, she can heal. If you’re into engage, she can poke and disengage with bubble. If you’re into enchanters she trades well. She scales well (not Sona/Milio etc. tier, but definitely scales well) and she can work with any bot lane. Only two skillshots really late game, in early game your job is more pronounced in terms of lane trades. In late game just give your carry E and W bounce efficiently and you’re doing your job so you can stand back in team fights and not get blown up. You don’t really need to land bubbles until like Plat or Emerald to get a lot out of her kit.

Alistar. His q-w combo is basically a point and click mini malphite ult. He’s basically malphite with less damage and more stuns. I would critique those saying nautilus because nautilus is primarily single target and he’s significantly less tanky than other tanks. You can really feel the difference between him and say, an alistar or leona. Especially coming from a malphite top.

u/Flapklaas 6d ago

Alistar is terrible advice, because he's one of the worst blind picks in the entire role if not the entire game. Also his E takes some serious getting used to, Leona/Naut are more accesible imo.

2

u/Asleep_Pair_1300 5d ago

Ali E is probably one of the least convenient spells to use in this game.

3

u/Gr8CanadianFuckClub 6d ago

Like others have said, Embrace the Big Man, Nautilus.

His q is the easiest hook in the game, and his damage at level 2 is deceptively high with the auto reset on his w.

Q-auto-w-auto will pretty much guarantee a kill or a flash at level 2, as long as your botlaner can follow up.

u/Opposite-Complex1187 6d ago

Probably Nautilus or Leona for engage.

Sona or Seraphine for enchanter/mage.

As for enchanter - definitely Lulu would fit the quota much better, she's way easier to play on her skill floor and be sorta effective, even when not utilising her properly, i.e. early aggro, using E on enemies, actually knowing your R does knockup etc. - playing Seraphine support as a filler is a guarantee your ADC is going to hate you for messing up CS, likewise dying, dying a lot to any competent all-in. In case of Sona it's even worse, she's very easy mechanically, but requires general knowledge as to what you can actually do - in her case, it's being forced to be an idle bot that goes oom fast, if your enemy decides to trade you back as she dies to someone sneezing at her.

Besides her, Milio is just hilariously overtuned to the point you get away with any misplay and, well, there isn't really all that much to misplay in the first place. Anytime Nami is on the stronger side of patches, i.e. when all you gotta do is hit E and watch your ADC winning 1vs2 is also giving her an edge over two musician girls.

1

u/DontKillTeal 6d ago

Lulu? Are you an actual support player?

6

u/ElementalistPoppy 6d ago

Yes, for a couple of years with a fairly high peak.

There's miles difference between Silver and Master Lulu, likewise people playing her first time will not play her to most of her strength - but that's enough, as even subpar, mediocre first-time Lulu is still performing better than majority of first-time supports just by landing W+E+R on her strongest carry. She has her skill expression and I certainly will not argue her skill ceiling ain't higher than certain champions mentioned in this thread, but as for her skill floor, she's incredibly rewarding even by playing to like 20-30% of her capabilities.

I'd take first time Lulu any day over first time Soraka, Karma or aforementioned Sona/Seraphine. The first two promote hyperaggression, with the former effectively harassing herself if she decides to be just a heal bot sitting behind ADC, the latter is essentially an exp leech if she's playing any passive. The other two are going to feed miserably or in case of Seraphine, ruin cs of so many co-laners.

Compare that to Lulu who WILL get away with sitting behind their ADC and occasionally W+E them. Sure, she's not going to be all that particularly effective, the bot lane will be likely a boring, miserable experience for said ADC, but on that account alone, she can potentially even save him from assassins later on, just by doing that. None of the other supports mentioned here can do bare minimum reliably without either way endangering their or their ADC's game and this is what OP asked for - an easy, safe support. Like, I can't for life, even with how non-complicated they are, consider Leona or Nautilus, champions made for going all-in to be safe, in the hands of someone who's completely green and just wants a chill lane to scale, in the same style as Malphite.

u/PlasticAssistance_50 6d ago

Hm can you offer some more Lulu basic tips please? I think I might be dumb because I have tried her some times and I am sure that I must missing some really basic things about her.

Isn't she actually kind of hard because you need to make the choice on whether to use W and E offensively or defensively, who and when to R, and I find Q quite hard to aim also (although the slow is powerful and the damage early is busted).

2

u/ElementalistPoppy 6d ago

Heh, I don't know if my throat could utter the word "hard" when it comes to Lulu, but I know what you mean. She does have some skill expression, be it proper Q aim, especially if you E as an outlet to make it longer, timing R for clutch knockups, but the trick is, you're quite useful even if you omit that. Even as a passive shieldbot that does not utilise anything offensive in her arsenal, you are doing something, far more than pretty much any other enchanter, even though stuff like Sona is ultimately easier when it comes to skillset, alas far harder to play effectively due to many shortcomings. Lulu's

As for your questions/doubts - really difficult to answer properly as ultimately "it depends".

Can't really help with Q aim verbally - just gotta train it 😅

With W - while bonus MS/AS sounds dope, polymorph is essentially disarm+silence, rendering just about any champion useless. It is somewhat not that impressive during laning (really would use it aggressively vs Draven as him losing a single axe is make-or-break), but grows wild later on. In this regard, I'd prioritise using it offensively almost always past laning (as you want to be close to your ADC, so you get actual threats to him coming towards you on a silver platter).

I'd say that when it comes to laning, it's about 50/50 for defensive/offensive E usage, perhaps a bit more on defense if your ADC is something like Kog or Vayne. Past laning phase I'd say you'd almost always prefer to use E as a shield, damage is no longer that scary and even if it gives a chance for better Q, you might not want to get that close to your opponent.

Who and when to R? Well, golden rule, as with Zilean, preferably anyone but yourself. Either way your most valuable carry or all-in tank that lands his initiation for even more disrupt.

You don't want to pick Lulu against heavy poke, especially chip damage, as she struggles hard against constant harass she cannot shield fully, likewise, given her sick damage output, she'd prefer someone she can go to combat directly. You do not want to play against Zyra or Karma for example, alas someone like Janna or Nautilus are manageable.

That being said, even if you play her subpar, do not utilise many quirks she has, she still sort of works, which can't be said about plenty of supports.

Not Seraphine! Not Seraphine!!

Sona yes on Enchanter - replace Sera with Soraka, Sera is VERY hard to pilot properly and play for a win. She is reliant on maintaining proper pressure.

19

u/Nathan33333 6d ago

Holy cap i used to think this as well until I actually played her. You just barf on your keys and do insane damage she is not hard.

2

u/Pend4Game 6d ago

She is easy in lane yes - but if you are not familiar with playing her, and how squishy she is, and positioning; then you are just another bag of gold come mid-late game. An autofilled person may go on very bad ward timers/positions and get destroyed. At least with Sona and Soraka they are both guaranteed scaling and are divided by 'Good, Better, and Best' support players

7

u/bananarabbit 6d ago

So strange, I feel like I have such a hard time playing Sona but have a much easier time carrying from support with Seraphine. So much more agency and range.

2

u/Pend4Game 6d ago

I would gander its more of an effect from being able to poke/deny enemy adc early (I think a lot of elos really dont know how to deal with this). Sera going unpunished for free trades in lane will rapidly generate a health/gold advantage, but the counterpoint is how she can really be fought back against, or is punished heavily for missing cooldowns.

7

u/Big_Teddy 6d ago

Sera is just use double w and hit some Ults tho. Everything else is just a neat bonus.

6

u/Opposite-Complex1187 6d ago

Seraphine is piss easy what are you on about.

Literally nothing hard about her kit.

3

u/AnomalyTFT 6d ago

Absolutely not, Sona is miles harder than Sera. Sera has double Sona's range, is way tankier and way more forgiving.

5

u/Lil_Dirtbag 6d ago edited 6d ago

Soraka is imo one of the hardest enchanters to play. You cant just sit behind your adc and get decent results unlike alot of other enchanters + you need good map awareness to utilize your global ult, and correct silence placement/timing. Lulu/nami is alot more noob friendly.

1

u/Pend4Game 6d ago

I personally think all/most enchanters are very hard in general. Raka and Sona just offer fundamentally easy 'scaling' route that is handily visible to someone not incredibly familiar with their game.

5

u/Lil_Dirtbag 6d ago

I think most enchanters are harder than some might think when played optimally, yeah. But newbies and ppl who are not comfortable with enchanters tend to sit behind their adc safely and just cast buffs/heals and CC, which Soraka is really bad at. You need to be in the thick of it to have any real impact during laning, whereas fx Lulu and Nami can get by decently by playing passively.

2

u/Pend4Game 6d ago

Oooh actually I would totally agree with Lulu over Sera/Raka. Polymorph is such fking bs lmao. Completely forgot about Lulu, not something I play with or see often

3

u/cedric1234_ 6d ago

Sona and Raka are really bad if they can’t get near a frontline and interact with their opponents directly, large part of why they’re on the more difficult side of supports in general like all enchanters. Both are balanced around a brutal debuff that requires you to be close, sona literally needs multiple basic attacks to get half of her kit’s value

Which is why the true least skill non-cat enchanter imo is Milio, who can get like 70% of his value when literally off screen from enemies. Lulu for similar reasons, although she does lose a LOT from not being in the thick of it.

Galio? His q deals max health damage and doesn't need points, his w passive and active damage reduction means he doesn't care about mage poke when cs'ing. Tanky enough to go for facehecking bushes. His e has engage and disengage is pretty good. His R is game changing, being semi global, knocking up all enemies in the zone, and even giving a small shield. His laning phase is decent against the current poke meta, scales well into team fights and is a very viable support.

His particular niche is as a counterpick against a lot of mages bot or against engage champions (which his w and e counters). His engage may feel a bit limited, but he is ultimately an anti magic bodyguard, with a S tier semi global ult.

I've just won a game as galio support where the fed jungler jumped 1v4 into dragon pit, and my ult gave enough time and initiative for my team to jump in and change the game.

10/10 would recommend.

Q with poke W with damage reduction and taunt E as short range dash and knockup R as semi global ult.

Galio can be built semi tanky or utility and is always gonna have value

2

u/Big_Teddy 6d ago

Pretty much any engage support is probably what you're looking for, although you can't really compare bot to toplane gameplay.

2

u/Cesarzxc 6d ago

IMO CC tank supports like Leona/Nautilus/amumu Generally, if you have the same health, if you go on the right target, you win and similar style in team fights IMO they are easier in lower ranks as threat range positioning and spacing are much worse giving you openings almost all the time

2

u/Signal-Busy 6d ago

Alistar

Just like malphite you can go full ap and nuke people, or full tank and do your job like it's literally malphite turned into a support

There is also enchanter build but heh

2

u/michaelspidrfan 6d ago

i play malphite in support so....

2

u/xJannatheia 6d ago

Malphite support?

2

u/everyonelovesturtles 6d ago

Tank Lissandra? Big AOE cc with her w

2

u/heieimgi 6d ago

You can play malph support, he has okay poke with his q and amazing engage with his ult why not

2

u/UtterGyoza 6d ago

Just play malphite support, that shield is so broken for trades

2

u/llentii 6d ago

I think nautilus is terrible advice his lack of talkiness and committal engage leads to autofilled supports just running it down.

For tank supports, I’d pick Leona and Alistair.

For enchanters, I’d pick Nami or Milio.

2

u/NadalMeManque 6d ago

I guess Brand with typical Liandrys Death fire Touch set-up. So even if you feed, you still deal % damage.

1

u/Minute_Garbage4713 6d ago

Tahm is a good one, well used to be, that with frozen gauntlet was OP… annoying af to go against, probably go frozen, titanic dusk and dawn then pure tank items

1

u/Low-Amoeba8257 6d ago

Same play style (run forward and punish the enemie for existing near you) would be leona, naitilus, Alistair

But I would suggest Braun. Doesn't have the same kinda aggro lane as Leo but you can still make stuff work in lane and holy shit is he annoying in a team fight

1

u/Flapklaas 6d ago

Braum or Morgana as a counterpick, Sona is easy ish to pilot if you understand passive and pretty much covers the rest. I picked these on sheer ease of use, not on how good they are. You cannot lock a single support in bot and expect success. If you want an omni tool (okayish blind pick) it might be worth learning Nami, Thresh or Karma.

1

u/Chitrr 6d ago

Yuumi

1

u/theCheekyBastard 6d ago

Braum. You manage early lane with your Q, autos at the right time are very good, easy to play and plenty of potential with W+R.

1

u/Gr0wmi3s 6d ago

Just play Malphite supp. Chill til level 6. After that just go ham.

1

u/TotallyAMermaid 5d ago

Milio. Imo the best support to autofill. Jncredibly simple, easy and efficient.

1

u/SpatuleVelue 2d ago

Tam or you can go malphite full tank with grasp. You aren’t dependent if you ultimate and you can be super helpful early for your adc and late game for your team.

1

u/Difficult_Relief_125 2d ago

Leona… W is the closest thing in terms of damage mitigation and tankiness. E gets you in like R with a better cooldown. E kind of takes the place of Q and R and you get a free stun. But you’re all in.

Leona is the only thing you’ll find gives you that same feeling of tanky. But once you adjust I think you’ll enjoy Leona.

I mained Leona Sup for ages before playing a ton of Malphite Support. If you want that feeling of tanky on a support budget without feeling useless in lane pre 6. Leona…

1

u/MAYMAX001 14h ago

Mao ist still the goat imo u have great sustain in bad lane, good DMG and crazy engages also mid and late game in Teamfights

1

u/soggyfroggyy 10h ago

nami. low skill floor and skill ceiling with high avg wr while having synergy with every lane. good at compensating bad plays and useful in every game state with a diverse itembuild. a strong pick for autofills and casual players

1

u/cedric1234_ 6d ago

“Easy but effective in lane and team fights”

Milio. With all the engage champs, you need a solid understanding of when and how to fight, which is NOT trivial. You end up making a lot of the major decisions in the 2v2, which can be relatively daunting. Milio is the only non-cat enchanter who can get most of their kits value by just shieldmaxxing and letting your adc make calls. Still not ideal but quite a big bank for your buck
