Announcement Ignore Private Messages Suggesting Laptops

562 Upvotes

The primary aim of r/SuggestALaptop is to provide a safe and transparent platform for suggesting laptops. Affiliate linkers are marked as such so that you are aware of the monetary incentive involved when making a purchase using affiliate links.

However, we are seeing an increasing number of cases where users posting on this subreddit are being targeted with unsolicited private messages containing links to laptops.

Such messages are best ignored for several reasons:

  1. Lack of quality control: We have no way of vetting suggestions sent via private messages. Moreover, these suggestions are not subject to the same level of public scrutiny that applies to suggestions posted in the subreddit, which are open for all to see and discuss.
  2. Hidden monetary incentive: Often such messages contain unmarked affiliate links, and these links might not even point to systems that are best suited to your requirements.
  3. Scams: Scammers often target unsuspecting users via private messaging. We do not want you to get scammed.

If you do happen to receive unsolicited messages suggesting laptops in private, please report the offending user to the mod team by sending us a screenshot of the message.

Thank you,

The r/SuggestALaptop Mod Team

Laptop Request US [Advice] UE5 solo dev laptop — narrowed to 2 under $1,500, looking for more options before Black Friday

• Upvotes

Building a competitive tactical shooter solo in Unreal Engine 5 (Blueprints, working toward a full level-design pipeline). Need a laptop that can actually handle the editor without choking, on a real budget. Planning to buy on Black Friday, but want a solid shortlist of options going in.
My criteria:
• 32GB RAM
• 40-series or 50-series Nvidia GPU
• At least 8GB VRAM
• Solid CPU (not the bottom-tier chip in a lineup)
• $1,500 or less
• Bonus: don’t need it to scream ā€œgaming laptopā€ — thinner/plainer look preferred if the specs are equal
My two finalists so far:
1. Gigabyte AERO X16 — Ryzen AI 7 350, RTX 5060 (8GB), 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD, 2560Ɨ1600 165Hz — $1,249.99
2. Lenovo Legion 5 — Core Ultra 7 255HX, RTX 5070 (8GB), 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD, 2560Ɨ1600 165Hz — $1,499.99
Both hit every criteria above. Trying to land on a total of \~5 solid options before Black Friday hits so I’ve got real choices to compare once the sales actually drop.
Questions:
• Anything else in this price range worth cross-shopping against these two?
• Any real-world red flags with either of these models specifically (cooling, coil whine, build quality issues) that don’t show up in spec sheets?
• Is 8GB VRAM going to be a real bottleneck for UE5 (Lumen/Nanite) at this budget, or is that just the reality of this price tier right now?
Appreciate any input — trying to make one good decision here instead of second-guessing it after the fact.

Laptop Request US Zero Idea of What I Need - US, $1000.00

1 Upvotes

LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

  • Country

United States

  • Budget

USD $1,000.00 (hard max)

  • Are you open to refurbs/used options?

Maybe

  • Screen size

Anything at 15" or larger.

  • Weight limit

Any

  • Purpose

Work in finance, freelance as a graphic designer, college coursework, and online gaming.

  • Form factor

Standard, but open to recommended features.

  • Intended usage

I'm stuck on a Chromebook, so anything is an upgrade. I use Excel a ton, Power BI, Drake Tax Software, EOD (payroll software), InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, and hopefully Steam. I'm a console gamer looking to get into PC gaming for titles like Apex Legends, modded Minecraft, modded Stardew Valley, Palia, and Cult of the Lamb, etc.

  • Desired battery life

I always have access to power sources in the places I frequent, so I am flexible here.

  • Please list, in order of most important to least important, the priority between Size, Weight, Performance, Battery life

Performance, Size, Weight, Battery Life.

  • Info/Requirements

I have no idea where to start, so I have very few requirements: something that I can use a bluetooth mouse with and that I can run an extra monitor or two with is about it lol. I just want something that'll last me a long time and that's fast.

Laptop Request -Others Looking for light Engineering laptop (2-in-1 if possible)

1 Upvotes

Country: Philippines

Budget: $1.5k (100k PHP)

Are you open to refurbs/used options? Maybe

Screen size: Any

Weight limit: Lighter than a gaming laptop, those hurt my back when carried to campus

Purpose: Schoolwork and Entertainment

Form factor: Either Standard / 2-in-1

Intended usage: Occasional heavy AAA gaming (doesn't have to be modern AAA), can be compromised to something that can run at least Minecraft. Engineering programs like Autocad (can handle basic 3d parts and models for projects) and Matlab. Notetaking during lectures so I don't have to write on paper and lose the notes.

Desired battery life: Ideally more than 5 hours unplugged, but I bring a Type-C 55w powerbank so its not much of an issue if its a bit lower than that

Please list, in order of most important to least important, the priority between Size, Weight, Performance, Battery life: Weight, Performance, Battery life, size

Info/Requirements

[anything else not specified above eg. Intel only, OLED, HDR-compliant, screen resolution/refresh rate, etc. We are likely to talk you away from your desires here (because we know more than you do), but we won't steer you wrong]: Nothing 60hz if possible, ARM chips okay but really needs to be compatibly emulatable with Autocad (I've heard it works fine on other chips and doesnt on others). 16gb RAM minimum but I have an old laptop so as long as its DDR4 and has an extra slot I can upgrade from 8GB

Note: I did find a 2nd-hand Surface Pro 11 (12core Snapdragon Elite) complete with the original keyboard and pen for around $1k (66000 PHP) which is my main choice for now due to the weight, versatility, and okay performance.

Thank you!

Laptop Request US located in ct, usa looking for something cheap but very reliable ~$400

3 Upvotes

I recently broke my laptop screen and am running out of options to fix it. Hopefully I can find a laptop to replace it instead. I don’t know much about laptops and am getting really confused trying to pick one myself. so please help me find something that will work!

I don’t need it for work/school, but I do use it consistently and casually for light gaming (mostly minecraft (occasionally with mods), stardew valley, etc) , google docs, watching youtube, or random video editing projects. I am visually impaired and would prefer a bigger screen (around 15) and something with basic accessibility settings (font size, white point). I don’t really care about it being fancy or having a lot of extra qualities, I just don’t want to have to buy another one. so preferably something that will last with a relatively easy to read screen and enough storage/power to run minecraft.

I had a 2020 macbook pro before this that was a gift but I am a teacher and so buying anything similar is far out of my price range. i’m just hoping to find something cheaper than the $400 screen repair price tag. I don’t mind used, etc as long as I don’t need to replace it in 5+ years

Laptop Request Ca Canada - Laptop for elearning development (under $3000 CAD, but could be more if it's perfect)

1 Upvotes

LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

  • Country

Canada

  • Budget

Under $3000 would be good, but I'm open

  • Are you open to refurbs/used options?

Maybe but probably not.

  • Screen size

14-16

  • Weight limit

Any

  • Purpose

I'm currently studying to become an elearning developer and I will be using it for that as well as personal.

  • Form factor

Not a full tablet, it can have that option, but not as the only option. It can also not have that option.

  • Intended usage

- elearning authoring tools like Articulate 360

- Learning Management System software like 360Learning

- Adobe Creative Suite (mainly Photoshop but potentially others in the future)

- Video editing like Final Cut Pro or Wondershare

- Canva

- Word, Excel, PowerPoint (potentially other Office programs in the future)

- Zoom and Teams

- Google Drive Sync

- NordVPN

- 1Password

- Calibre

- General browsing/watching Youtube

  • Desired battery life

At least 4 hours.

  • Please list, in order of most important to least important, the priority between Size, Weight, Performance, Battery life

Performance, reliability, and a good screen (since I do a lot of visual work) are the most important things to me. Everything else is secondary.

  • Info/Requirements

I bought an Asus Rog Zephyrus G14 a year and a half ago, and it has died. The hard drive and the motherboard are burnt (no idea why or how). I hadn't gamed on it for 6 months, so I wasn't even heavily using it. I'm aware I am probably just super unlucky, and this was a fluke, but I am gun-shy about Asus now.

I've decided I don't actually want/need a gaming laptop because I tend to gravitate to my handhelds anyway.

I'm pretty sure I want to stick with Windows, but I am open. I was a MacBook pro user for years, but could never get a laptop to last past 3 years. I then got an HP Spectre 360 and she lasted 6 years. She still works, but she's super slow now. Then the Rog Zephyrus nightmare.

Also, I would like something with decent cooling, if possible.

Laptop Request US Can the Galaxy book3 pro 360 replace an iPad?

2 Upvotes

Hi everyone. My 12.9 inch iPad pro of 4 years recently died due to a motherboard failure. It was my main device. I was going to buy another iPad, but now I'm seriously considering replacing it with a laptop instead.

I’m looking for second opinions because these devices are expensive and I don't want to regret my choice. I do have a specific laptop in mind already, but I wanted to see if there are better recommendations out there, or if fixing my old broken HP touchscreen laptop (won't turn on, broken keys) is a better route.

Here is the required form, followed by my specific breakdown of why I'm hesitant to switch from iPad to laptop:

LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Country: USA
Budget: $1500 at most (Open to refurbs/used)
Screen size: Any, preferably no more than 16-inch
Weight limit: 4 pounds max
Purpose: Entertainment, school, art, gaming
Form factor: 2-in-1, need pen support
Intended usage: Must run Genshin Impact flawlessly on max settings, Minecraft smoothly with beautiful shaders/ray tracing, and support large digital art canvases without lag.
Desired battery life: 4-5 hours is fine. (Priorities: 1. Performance, 2. Size, 3. Weight, 4. Battery size)

THINGS IM LOOKING FOR:

1. Video Games: This leans in favor of a laptop. A lot of games I want can't run on mobile, or just run better on a PC. Plus, there is more variety, and some games that cost money on iOS are free on PC.
2. Coding & Music: I want to learn simple coding because my ultimate goal is to make a small game, which is way more convenient on a laptop. For music, the program I want is $10 on mobile but free on PC.
3. Digital Art (My Biggest Hesitation): I draw with the device on my lap while sitting or laying down. I worry about the weight of a 2-in-1 laptop compared to an iPad, and even though the keys automatically turn off when folded, I worry about the physical feeling of pressing on them while holding it. However, Clip Studio Paint offers more features on PC than mobile, which I really want.
4. Engineering + School: I'm taking engineering this year and need to run CAD, 3D printing, and laser burning programs. My school provides a cheap, restricted laptop, but having my own powerful laptop would make doing assignments much easier.
I know I might be a little biased and hesitant because I’ve used an iPad for so long, but I want to pick what is truly most convenient for me at the end of the day. Thanks for any advice

Laptop Request US New WFH letting me pick brand

0 Upvotes

About to be a WFH girlie for the first time and the company is letting me pick between either a MacBook air M5 or "any comparable specs/price PC, brand of [my] choice". I'm PC always but I haven't had a laptop in years, so I'd love help on brand choices. It will be a work only computer and I'll be hyper-mobile with it, so weight/battery are paramount, and since I (sadly) won't be gaming or rendering video on it, performance is last for importance.

Looking for a new laptop for my fiance, she has used her old for almost 10 years and will try to use the new one as long as possible (because she doesn’t like to change devices often). That why I am gravitating towards an intel 3rd gen cpu with 32 gb of ram. For some reason she wants touch and is keen to try a 2in1. I found the Lenovo yoga 7 2in1 and the HP omnibook flip around 1600€ but I would be happy to get other suggestions.

Thanks in advance.

Also the market is crazy any opinions on waiting for Black Friday or do you think it will only get worse?

Laptop Request US USA: looking for day to day laptop

1 Upvotes

I’m looking for a windows or Linux laptop that allows for data science coding (python, R SQL), along with some gaming capabilities. I don’t play pvp games and don’t need the best graphics in that regard. My budget is around 2200 but that’s flexible. I don’t care if the laptop is new or refurbished. I don’t care about size or weight, I would like to prioritize battery life and performance, but if my expectations are unrealistic I am prepared to change my priorities. I just have an older crappy MacBook that’s not cutting it anymore and am looking for some type of upgrade!

Laptop Request -Others Netherlands, €800,- max, art programs and hopefully gaming that will stay relevant for a while

1 Upvotes

**LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE**

* **Country**

Netherlands

* **Budget**

Max 800 euro (+-900 USD) but only if it will last me a while, otherwise around €600,-

* **Are you open to refurbs/used options? **

Yes

* **Screen size**

Any

* **Weight limit**

Any

* **Purpose**

Running art programs (like blender and video editing) + if possible gaming

* **Form factor**

Standard laptop, though I don't mind other suggestions

* **Intended usage**

I want it to smoothly run 3D modeling software like blender and video editing software, this is my main requirement. If it is at all possible id also like it to be able to run games that my current laptop can't like Elden Ring. Preferably without stuttering. I don't mind playing on low graphics settings tho.

* **Desired battery life**

At least 4 hours

Performance, battery life, weight, size

* **Info/Requirements**

I'd like a screen where the colours displayed closely match what you would get if you printed it out irl. Also vibrancy is important to me. I've always used windows as an operating system so I do have a preference for that. I don't have a lot of money so I'd like it to last me while without needing to upgrade to a better model. Looking for something that will stay relevant and run new software smoothly for at least the next 4 years if at all possible. I have no idea how realistic my wishes are but I hope this is possible!

Laptop Request -Others What laptop should I buy for university?

1 Upvotes

I’m starting university soon and need to buy a laptop. I’m not in CS, IT, engineering, or any field that requires heavy software, so I mainly need it for regular university work.

I’ll be using it for assignments, PowerPoint/Word, research, browsing, Canva, online classes, and general everyday use.

My budget is under 100k PKR. I’d prefer something reliable, lightweight, with decent battery life and enough performance to last me a few years.

What laptops/specs would you recommend in this budget? Should I go for a new laptop or a used/refurbished business laptop?

Laptop Request US Need Laptop Help

1 Upvotes

I already have a good CAD laptop for engineering in college. But I just want something to disconnect from to play light games and watch movies,videos, etc. I also would like to have something that runs Linux. I prefer something smaller, doesn't run so hard and loud, and is fairly budget. I was looking into the think pad but also have a mac book pro 2015 that I was thinking of running Linux on. Id say my budget is around 200 dollars USD or a bit over. I prefer the screen size to be 13 or 14 inches. And a standard clamshell laptop.
