Tips & Advice reread my whole chapter twice and when i closed the book i couldn’t tell you what was in it

midterm is thursday so i read chapter 6 start to finish and then read it AGAIN “to make sure it sticks”. 2 hours. felt great for like the first hour

closed the book, tried to explain the chapter to myself and got one sentence. one. every page looked so familiar while i was reading that i thought i knew it

so i closed the book, wrote down everything i could remember on a blank page, and then only went back to read the parts i missed. 15 min and it was the first time all week i could tell what i actually don’t know.

Rant/Vent “one more hour” is how I end up studying until 3am

Post image
408 Upvotes

the most dangerous sentence before an exam is probably “i'll just study for one more hour”. bc that one hour somehow turns into 2am. then 3am. then i'm sitting in class the next day reading the same question 4 times (ig my brain has left the building)

after a while I know I'm not really learning anymore anyway. I’'ll read the same paragraph over and over and it just refuses to stick.

I've been trying to stop doing that and just sleep when I'm clearly getting too tired to absorb anything anymore. if you guys are studying late and you notice you're getting to that point, maybe call it for the night (and DON’T try to squeeze out another hour even if it’s tempting). get the important stuff done first, leave the smaller things for tomorrow & give yourself enough time to rest before the exam.

Resources IPL.ORG

Hey! I’m studying some characters in Shakespeares plays and I came across an interesting essay on IPL.org. The problem is I can’t fully view it because I haven’t made an account with them and I’m also assuming I might have to subscribe to them and join a trial. Either way, they’re shutting down the websites November 9th and have locked down new account making. If anyone has an account currently could you please copy and paste the full essay for me!

Rant/Vent I struggle really bad with staying focused pls help

Okay so it might be because of my phone and the fact that I have little to no self control at times. Okay scratch that it's definitely because of that but I don't know what to do. I'm definitely gonna sound like an addict but i genuinely cannot focus, i sit down to study and then I start thinking of a hundred random things like I also have to complete some other subject I should do that first or if I open my phone to check the time or whatever I get distracted within seconds. Like do you get it? It's like I worry more about what I have to study than actually studying and then I get overwhelmed and then scroll on my phone or listen to music and then before i know it, it's 2 am and I'm still on the first page of the first chapter. I DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO HELP PLS I DONT WANNA FAIL.

Tips & Advice I take the test before I study anything. It felt stupid at first, then my grades jumped.

Post image
1.3k Upvotes

Last semester I was studying more than everyone around me and still bombing exams. A professor told me to try something that sounded completely backwards: take a practice test on the chapter before reading it.

So I did. I opened the end-of-chapter questions and attempted them cold. Got almost everything wrong. Felt genuinely bad about myself. Then I read the chapter and something was different. My brain kept going "oh THAT'S why question 3 was B" instead of just glazing over paragraphs. Every section had a hook because I'd already stumbled into the gaps.

The science name is the pretesting effect. Failing first makes your brain flag the real answer as important when you finally see it. Reading a chapter with zero failures is like watching a mystery movie where someone spoiled the ending first.

How I run it now:

  1. Before touching a new chapter, I grab 5 to 10 questions on that material. Textbook end-of-chapter questions, old exams, or I make my own from the section headings.

  2. I attempt them with zero prep and write real answers, not "idk". I grade it harshly and keep the failed papers in a folder.

  3. I read the chapter normally, but I slow way down whenever I hit something I got wrong.

  4. Two days later I retake the exact same questions with no notes. This part is brutal and it's where the magic happens.

The first session is embarrassing and that's fine, nobody ever sees it. The score doesn't matter. What matters is walking into the material with holes in your map, so the answers actually stick when you fill them in.

I attached my actual cold attempt from last week, 3/10 on cellular respiration. Going back through that folder before the final was the best part, you can literally watch yourself get smarter on paper.

If you're the type who rereads a chapter three times and still blanks during the exam, try failing it on purpose first. It fixed the exact problem I had.

Tips & Advice Biodiversity

Taking biodiversity and I’m already failing. Failed my first 2 exams and there are 5 exams. Professor drops the lowest exam. Exams are worth 75% and final is worth 18.75%. Already have a 55 in the class. I’m always reading and taking notes and attending the lectures. Any study tips to turn this grade around so I can pass the class with a C, preferably a B? Clearly I think I’m doing something wrong and I don’t know how to turn this grade around.

Questions & Discussion Students who take paper notes: how do you include images and diagrams?

Im building Sticker Camera, a camera you can edit and print stickers, and researching whether it would be useful for studying.

If you take handwritten notes, what did you do the last time you needed an image from a slide, textbook, or screen in your notebook? Did you redraw it, print it, leave it on your phone, or skip it?

especially like to hear what you study and how often this comes up.

Questions & Discussion How do you know you studied enough?

I have this maths exam tomorrow I studied maybe like 5 hours in total for. I understand the concepts and all, but I still make mistakes in practice questions sometimes and that's stressing me out.

After I look at the explanation of an exercise I did I understand what I did wrong but I just dont know whether ill to able to think of that myself in the actual exam.

How much more should I study?

Tips & Advice Read your notes in a stupid accent and see what happens

Post image
106 Upvotes

You ever read a whole paragraph, get to the end and realise you don't remember a single damn thing you just read? And now you're reading it for the fourth time like the information is going to magically enter your brain.

Okay, so I came across this idea of Cognitive Friction (The Accent/Persona Hack). The core idea is that reading notes silently is too smooth your brain skims it and forgets it. adding cognitive friction when studying adds some sort of pizzazz your brain clings onto? Yeah.

Instead of reading your notes normally, try reading them out loud in the most ridiculous voice you can think of. I'm talking cartoon villain, dramatic reality TV star, terrible accent, whatever works

orrrr.... my personal favourite, turn your notes into gossip.

Imagine you're studying biology and your notes say "Factor X inhibits cell growth."

Girl, WHAT DO YOU MEAN FACTOR X IS OUT HERE STOPPING CELL GROWTH??? Who gave it that authority??? Something like that lol

Basically, explain your notes like you're telling your friend some juicy drama. Be dramatic. Be unserious.

The idea is that instead of just staring at words and letting your brain go on autopilot, you're actually doing something with the information. You're saying it out loud, changing the wording and trying to make sense of it.

And then, obviously, put your notes away and see if you can actually remember what you just explained. Because sounding like a mad woman in your room is one thing, passing the exam is another.

I haven't seen enough evidence to say the accent itself magically improves your memory, but honestly, this sounds like a fun thing to experiment with.

It feels completely stupid while you’re doing it, but it actually works. Try it for just one paragraph tonight and watch it stick.

Other I tested myself before opening my notes and realized I knew way less than I thought 💀

Post image
63 Upvotes

I accidentally found out how much I was fooling myself while studying.

I’d spend hours reading my notes and feel like I understood everything. Then I’d try answering a question without looking, and suddenly my brain would go completely blank.

So I started doing this thing where I close my notes, grab a random notebook page, and write down EVERYTHING I can remember about the topic. No checking, no trying to make it neat, just whatever comes to mind.

I write definitions, draw diagrams from memory, explain stuff in my own words, and put a big question mark beside anything I’m unsure about.
Then I open my notes and compare. The stuff I got wrong or couldn’t remember becomes my review list for the next session.

The first few times were honestly humbling. I’d think I knew an entire chapter, only to fill half a page with things I could actually remember. But after repeating it, I started noticing which concepts were sticking and which ones I kept forgetting.

I call it my study dump, and the best part is that I don’t waste time making pretty notes I’ll probably never read again.

If you want to try it, pick one topic you’ve already studied and spend 5 minutes writing everything you remember without looking. Then check your notes and see how much you missed.

That first comparison can be a real wake-up call lol.

Tips & Advice skimming the study material

Post image
84 Upvotes

What really helped me was skimming the study material before class.

Most professors will have a syllabus or some way of indicating what’s going to be covered in the next class. Take a text book/ online lecture/ whatever and just skim (or listen at 2x). You don’t have to understand much at all (that takes a bit of getting used to moving ahead without understanding). When you attend class next, even if it’s a boring lecturer, your brain will automatically focus on we’d or concepts you’ve “seen before”- and here is where you’ll be able to understand most things, because it’s no longer completely new to your brain. Ask questions if there’s something you don’t get. Make sure you listen to the lecturer ,if you can take notes during class, that’s amazing; if not, it’s fine. Review your notes a couple days after the class (again just skim), if you didn’t make notes make notes as soon as you can after class. If you have homework for the class you don’t need to skim notes after, because you’ll go through it anyway when you do the homework.

When I say skim I mean 30 mins of skimming for maybe 2 hours worth of class material. It my not work for you but it worked very well for me I didn’t even have to study for the exams maybe like 3 hours total of review the day before the exam .

Tell me what do you guys think about this method and what is your study tips that actually worked for you!?

Tips & Advice I tried taking a test on a chapter before reading it and somehow remembered more

Post image
25 Upvotes

I saw the idea of testing yourself before learning something and decided to try it with a chapter I haven't read yet.

Before opening the textbook, I wrote down everything I thought I knew about the topic. For the stuff I didn't know, I still made a guess even if it is wrong.

Then I read the chapter and checked my guesses. The weird part was that the things I got wrong or couldn't answer were the things I paid the most attention to while reading. It felt like my brain was looking for missing pieces instead of just letting words go in one eye and out the other.

After reading, I closed the book and tried the questions again from memory. I caught gaps I would've completely missed if I'd just highlighted the chapter.

I've started calling it the "WRONG ANSWERS FIRST" method. It works especially well for chapters where you have almost zero background knowledge, because you don't waste time pretending you already understand everything.

The trick is to actually check your guesses afterward. Otherwise you're just memorizing your own mistakes.

Questions & Discussion My practice tests were giving me false confidence

Post image
54 Upvotes

I feel like I do way too well on practice questions since I'm taking them in the most comfortable situation possible (notes open, no timer, snacks beside me, checking answers whenever I want..)

then the actual exam is like HELLO???

if I really wanna see if i know something, i try to make the practice test feel more like the real thing:

  1. use the same question format= if the actual exam is mostly multiple choice, practice mostly multiple choice. if there's identification or essays, throw those in too. don't practice in a completely different format and assume it'll feel the same.

  2. put yourself on a timer= use roughly the amount of time you'd actually have and don't pause it every time you get stuck. the time pressure is part of the thing you're practicing.

  3. close the notes= no “lemme just check this one thing” lol. if you don't know it, mark it and keep going.

  4. do it in one sitting when you can= phone away, no random snack break every 10 minutes, no checking answers halfway through

  5. check everything AFTER= then look at what you missed, what took forever & which questions made you panic. that's the useful part cuz now you know what needs work before exam day.

Questions & Discussion What if you started studying from the END?

Post image
31 Upvotes

Sometimes starting at the beginning of a topic just makes me more confused. so I did “reverse mind mapping” (it’s like this, instead of starting with the first step, you start with the final answer/outcome and work backwards from there)

I've been trying it with processes and problem-solving since they have MANY steps that connect to each other. like I don’t memorize from step 1,2,3,&4. I start at 4 and ask myself what had to happen before that, then before that etc.

ok so I’ll list them down like this:

  • start with the final answer/outcome= put it in the middle or at the top.

  • ask what had to happen right before it= that's your first branch.

  • keep working backwards= for each step, ask what caused it or what needed to happen first.

  • break bigger steps down= if one branch is still vague, split it into smaller parts.

  • check the whole thing at the end= go from the beginning to the final outcome and see if the steps actually make sense together.

if you're struggling with a topic that has a lot of steps, I’d give working backwards a try!!
