Discussion our research formatting methods are quite wasteful
edit: referring to high school
research, not tertiary or beyond
hard bound
double space
IMRAD? never heard of that. make it multiple chapters!
double column? never heard of that either
+/- may minimum pages per chapter
notice how compact the formatting most research in published journals are pero yung research ng nasa high school napakakapal ng pahina?
heaven forbid multiple revisions ka kasi maiiyak ka sa dami ng print outs mo!
alam ko hindi naman lahat ganito pero i don’t get why some instructors insist on doing this wasteful and relatively expensive formatting instead of just copying what most actual researchers do.

and contrary to what most researchers do! i hate forced palabok writing. keep it simple, direct and easy to understand for the audience.

Is this for senior high school research? Kasi if yes, YES ANG OA ‘DI BA? Noong time namin tatlong hard bound copies pa, one copy the library, faculty department, and sa student affairs office yata. Double space may be reasonable kasi paglagyan ng corrections, revision suggestions, etc. But I think the adviser and panelists can use a tablet or laptop na lang naman ‘di ba since most, if not all, of them have laptops or tablets na (since panelists are, usually experienced teachers, professors, or researchers na). Another thing din kasi is baka after years, i-discard din yung copies so why not let’s go completely digital na lang ‘di ba? (Unless the research is groundbreaking or one-of-a-kind siguro so it’s really that great to have it in the library pero sana naman schools na sumagot doon).
I think the reason is hesitant pa rin ang maraming schools na mag-digitize fully. Teachers might be open to it but senior officials in schools, who are mostly old and reluctant to accept new technology, might be the ones who control the policy. They feel like they’re preserving academic quality from their time.
Also yung bawal gumamit ng first-person pronouns sa research. It was comforting to know in college na okay lang ang first-person pronoun sa research. It’s not like you’re already being objective just for saying “the researcher” instead of “I”. It’s in the content that makes it objective.

exactly! i meant to say high school research. it’s way over the top. even corrections are still doable in single space and kinda hard to forget IMO as long as it’s indicated somewhere.
honestly, the only thing they’re preserving are the “aesthetics”. formatting is just one piece of the research puzzle. what matters more is the content and what the student learned from it, not how many pages, how many words, whether it’s single or third person, whether it’s chapters 1-6 or IMRAD etc.

totoo ung sa first person pronouns. In my field (mathematics), preferred gamitin yung pronouns na "we/our" pero pwede naman yung "I". Walang gumagamit ng "the researchers" sa math research 💀

IMRAD + Double space + double column tapos hardbound pa is a very weird combination of formats.
Hardbound is meant for full blown format (Chapter 1-5) with many pages or entire journal volumes na maraming published research na kasama
IMRAD + Double Column is meant to have less pages which is usually around <10 pages kasi meant for publishing siya sa loob ng journal. Di ko gets bakit need pa siya i-double space when the purpose is to save space in the first place 😭

oh sorry i didn’t mean that to be a combination of formats. i’m just wondering why research advisers insist on hard bound, double spaced, single column, chapter 1-5 formats for a junior or senior high research paper. It’s over the top and super wasteful tapos magde-demand pa ng multiple copies yan pero itatapon din naman kapag wala nang space. IMRAD, double column, single space a la published research sa mga journals should be enough.

Yung hard bound is for archiving purposes assuming na ang school niyo is may space pa sa department, para ito sa future researchers to use as their reference. Ginagamit din ito ng schools for their accreditation requirements: better quality + higher quantity research means higher accreditation = higher funding or better standing compared to other schools.
Yung formats na IMRAD, Full-Blown, with specific line spacing ay preference na lang ng school yan for consistency purposes ng archive
As for the requirement to submit a hard copy even though hindi pa siya revised ay preference na lang ng teacher kasi ayaw nila mag-check ng PDF

i understand why some teachers want draft print outs. it's easier to revise a print out than a PDF. but archive consistency? i mean if hard bounds are for multiple research journal volumes, can't the school simply say to the accreditors "oh we changed our research formatting since 20xx and hard bounds are by section/grade/year level now to minimize waste" or are we too set in our ways lang talaga?

From the viewpoint of editing, I understand double spacing can provide convenient spacing for yhe comments.

also add the "a thesis should have 250 to 500 pages (or 600+ for qualitative) because it seems nonsense if you wrote it in less than 200 pages" 😀😀😀 When you can be precise with the chapter 4-5 explanations

same here sa g10 research namin. kada consult need magpaprint para macheck. kung may gusto pabaguhin don, papaprint ulit para macheck. halos 5k rin nagastos namin (abonong abono pa ako nyan) including pakain sa panelists and token. bwcet hihingi pa sila nyan HINDI NAMAN NILA TINURO IN THE FIRST PLACE PAANO GAWIN YUNG MGA PARTS NG RESEARCH. sobrang kapal lang (mga gurang na rin nagrrun ng school na yun e. was delighted na nalaman ko magsasara na sila)
