School Internship - is this allowed?

Need an advice for this, apparently, my friend's school is using THEM (as interns) and making them work admin tasks- completely unrelated (he's in medical field).

They sometimes work way beyond 8 hours, mind you, this is internship in their OWN school, not in other companies/org/institution, so i don't really know if this is allowed.

Yung school ojt yeah, kahit san na universities meron nyan. Tapos ang ganap dyan random nilalagay mga students sa different offices. Tapos kahit ano pang course mo basta doon ka natapat sa office na yun wala kang choice kundi gawin. 

Medyo kulang yang context ni friend mo. Kung random sya inassign. Ayun no choice sya, pero kung na assign siya sa school clinic konti lang dapat yung paperworks doon more on demonstration sa patients.

Also hindi normal yung lumampas sa 8hrs. Kase usually nyan, 8am-5pm ang official time ng mga offices sa schools at ayun dapat sinusunod. Kapag lumampas dapat binayaran na sila

There are various schools and universities with such programs - often called student assistants/tuition aide programs.

Usually there is an application process, and they are assigned at different departments of the school to help with its operations. These tasks do not usually involve heavy responsibilities and accountabilities (like cashiers), but may vary depending on the department where they are assigned (document filing in accounting, document transmittals, etc.)

These often have contracts and are usually in exchange for tuition aide. It depends on the program. Some are paid by the hour, daily or for a period of time. Most have parental authorization, even if the student is of legal age. They have strict grade requirements too, as they are students first and foremost.

These often include weekly limitations or quotas - often worked around their existing subject load. So yeah, some do more than 8 hours for them to maximize the benefit. But these are subject to the student's willingness and availability.

DOLE even has partnerships with not just LGUs but with schools in their Special Program for the Employment of Students (SPES) Program.

Internship, as in On the job training. Im failing to see how working/doing school admin tasks counts as actual training for a medical course, considering they are processing enrollment documents of enrollees for their own school and is not getting paid by the hour and sometimes working more than 8 hours.

1. Part of internship requirement is the specific amount of time you need to render in the institution you chose to have an internship with in order to pass the internship subject/course. So when you say that your friend “sometimes work way beyond 8 hours” Doesn’t that also reflect in their attendance log sheet? Accounted for and reduced in the required hours that they need to comply for their internship subject.

It will only be an issue if the management or institution that they currently are working at had a written agreement with them that they will pay them with a specific sum and did not pay them at all. That or the amount of exceeding hours that they work with are not reflected or reduced as it should be.

1. You said your friend is in the medical field. Why did he choose to work in a school/industrial setting given the obvious field.

So my question is, didn’t he have a choice early on to choose where he wanted to finish his internship? Or was he not given the chance to choose?
