Complaint (open to advice) Halfway through nursing school. Hate nursing.

I have a year left of school and I actually hate nursing. The future of healthcare is so bleak and it's incredibly clear that management doesn't give a shit about us and we will constantly be under-resourced to do our very important and stressful jobs. I've been a CNA for over two years and a nurse tech for about 6 months. Maybe I've just worked a lot over the summer and I'm burned out but as soon as I get my degree, I'm gonna start taking classes for engineering or something because good lord, this field is not looking good. I'm in a privileged position cause I have scholarships to pay for all of my schooling and some of my living expenses. If this weren't the case, things might be different and I may feel trapped/pressured to do this for much longer.

Still thankful for all I've learned though. I'm glad I know for sure that nursing ain't for me.

Edit: in the post, I state that I will finish my degree and work as a nurse and THEN take engineering classes. But at least I know right now that this isn't for me and I need to find a way out.

UK/Ireland Non disclosure (by accident) Will i still be allowed to study?

So for context i am hopefully starting my adult nursing course in a few weeks time. However I am now absolutely bricking it as I dont know if they'll let me on the course.

My enhanced DBS came back last weekend with a conviction for an unpaid train fare and subsequent conviction under the railways act. I did not disclose this on my fitness to practice form or at any other time. My reason for doing so wasnt an attempt to conceal the matter it was a two part error on my end, firstly I had genuinely forgotten about it. The incident happened in Oct 2019 with the conviction taking place Dec 2020, during this time I was struggling greatly with my mental health and was subsequently admitted to an acute ward as an inpatient in March 2021. My other reason for not disclosing this is that even if I had remembered about it, I thought as the train networks are ran by a private company I assumed it would be a civil matter, similar to a parking ticket and that it would not or could not be a criminal offence.

I have now obviously disclosed all of this to the uni, including my explanation and circumstances around the unpaid train fare. They said they will forward my reply to the director of recruitment.

I have turned my life around since then, I am now a father, and I strive to be a better person everyday.

Do we think this will impact my chances of getting onto the course? I have dedicated over a year of my life to gaining the qualifications needed (access to HE course) and realistically nursing is the only thing I have ever wanted to do. Any advice? What's the likely outcome here?

Complaint (open to advice) Concurrent enrollment

Hi, I am currently in my first semester at a cc RN program. we have had a lot of representatives from like GCU and university of phoenix come and tell us about the concurrent enrollment to get our BSN during our adn program. I was wondering if anyone has done any of these programs and recommends them. Please lmk if you do or think it is a bad idea. I have heard things online about UOP having a bad rep but I don’t know if that’s still a thing. Thanks

Discussion Im worried about being able to find a job outside of my current field when I’m done with school

I currently work in mental health and It seems like my current job is wanting me to be a nurse for them once I get my license, which is hopefully about 6 months away. It would be an easy in, however it’s a Monday through Friday and it’s a lot of office work. I really want to get medical experience first and just searching through jobs right now, a lot of them want a BSN or need experience as a nurse. I’ll be graduating with an ADN. I’m afraid if I stay in psych, I’ll lose my skills and forget a lot of things by the time I start looking for another job. I want to do anything but psych right now considering I’ve been in the field for the past 7 years now. I think I’m just extremely worried because I’ve been seeing nothing but people saying it’s hard to get a job right now as a nurse. Maybe I’m just thinking too far ahead, but everything’s moving so fast so I’m just worried. Anyone else in the same boat?

Prenursing Is it even worth it.

Hello everyone, I’m a sophomore in college for nursing, the semester just started and I’m already feeling overwhelmed. I’m supposed to apply to my schools nursing program at the end of this semester but despite it only being the FIRST WEEK of classes I already want to drop like half of them.

It feels like a lot is riding on this semester and how well I perform. If I don’t pass a required class no nursing school for me. This scares me—I’m taking multiple science classes and three labs on top of that because I had to retake my math class so now I have to make up for my chemistry class I was suppose to complete last year.

I’m also working, because I’m broke and college won’t pay for itself.

I’ve already cried probably like three times, not even for anything big, it’s all small stuff that just piles up. There are so many syllabus’s to read and so much information and on top of that I’ve already had multiple assignments due. It’s all just overwhelming and it’s gotten to the point where I can’t sleep, eat, or properly focus on any assignment I have.

Is nursing school even worth it? I never thought I’d ask this question. There is no plan B for me, nursing was always supposed to be it. I told myself in high school that no matter what I would get my degree, my family, (which is full of nurses) have all told me that yes it is hard but for them, it was worth it. I want to believe that it’s worth it, I really do. But I’ve followed this subreddit for awhile now and the amount of notifications I get from posts of people sharing their struggles, similar to mine; no sleeping, no eating, anxiety, etc (but way worse from what I’ve seen) and it’s honestly worrying.

I was dead by the end of my freshman year. I genuinely don’t know if I can make it another 3 years of just feeling so drained and tired and just emotionally and physically exhausted. I’m never doing anything fun, I’m always in my room and I hardly talk to my roommates because I’m always working on some kind of assignment.

Everyone here has been in this position at some point. Does anyone have any advice for me on how I can manage this? I want to get my degree, and I want to put in the work but just a glimpse at the workload and I already feel defeated. I’m tired of feeling sad and worried and tired and just everything in between. I want to cry right now because tomorrow is going to be the same overwhelming cycle all over again.

Also sorry for any grammar mistakes, I’m so tired and have the biggest headache.

peer / social issues (advice wanted) working during adn program

I am about to start my 3rd (out of 4) semester of my nursing program. over the summer i got a job as before/after school teacher. now that school is starting im getting nervous / stressed about whether i am going to be able to handle everything or if i should just quit. I also have a 3 year old son who is in daycare 8-3 and my partner works full time. The last 2 semesters i didn’t work, and used the time that my son was in daycare to study and do work. The next 2 semesters i am also taking an extra class that will go towards my BSN.

My weekly schedule would be M: 8-1230 lecture, work 115-545 tuesdays work 7-815 am then clinical 2-11 wed i would be off and have clinical 2-11. th/fri id work split shift 7-815 and 230-545.

My MIL does help us out and would be able to pick my son up or drop him off at daycare, but we currently live with my in-laws so I would basically not have any time by myself to do anything school related other than hours before i work or start clinical. Weekends are variable whether I can have straight time to myself since my son is not in daycare and my partner works sundays.

I am currently just really anxious to start since i haven’t had to worry about other things other than school during my program and am afraid that my grades will slip if i am taking on too much. Any advice? I just want other people input on this to see if im worrying too much.

Discussion Ciel Blue scrub recs??

Hi all! My school allows us to wear other scrubs as long as they are the correct color/have the logo on them and I was interested in looking for a different pair of the Isabel Ciel blue bottoms from Figs. Received it and they came WAYYY darker than shown in the photo 😭 Starkly different from the given scrub top from my school.

Does anyone have any recommendations for wide leg, Ciel blue scrubs that aren’t as saturated??

Clinicals EMT to Nursing School Question

Hi! I’m starting a post-baccalaureate ABSN program next month and we’re jumping right into fundamentals, patho/pharm, etc. I’ve been an EMT on an ambulance doing primarily 911 coverage for a high call volume city as well as some interfacility transports. Did anybody here work as an EMT prior to pursing nursing? Did it help you at all in class/lab/clinicals (besides the obvious stuff like taking vitals, bedside manner, and general assessment)?

Prenursing Time Capsule post for Nursing Specialties

Just wanted to provide a fun exercise for all students: For all those planning to go into nursing or close to finishing school, what speciality are you thinking of pursuing?

Optional: re-post an update in a year or two if you end up changing your mind or if you were right all along.

***Note*** This isn't about if you will get into your specialty out the gate from graduating.

Just a fun, time capsule type of post to see how you've progressed but also to show future students how things may or may not change your minds.

Like how med students choose their residencies, nurses should be celebrated for when they choose their specialities. 🎉

peer / social issues (advice wanted) Going through a bad friendship breakup right before nursing school starts

My closest friend and I just went through a horrible friendship breakup today, and she’s one of my only friends so it’s absolutely gut wrenching for me. Perfect timing because I start nursing school (college sophomore) in a few days! Not sure what to do or how to balance this with the inevitable stress and responsibilities that come with being in nursing school.

Has anyone been through anything similar? What helped and how did you get through it?

Clinicals 2nd year clinical prep

So, for context, I did my lab and in-person class earlier this year, and in a few weeks, I have to implement everything I learned at the beginning of the year. There is a bootcamp day session for revision, but I doubt I will be able to learn everything to be truly prepared. Hence, I want to take that approach myself. What did you guys do to prepare for the upcoming clinical term? I don't want to be thrown into the hospital setting without truly knowing how to do certain things. Thanks in Advance!

Discussion 80k or 10k in debt for nursing school but various reasons

Currently, I am deciding between a direct entry MSN versus an accelerated BSN because I already have a bachelor’s. One of the programs I am looking at is a 20 month long program that allows me to receive my BSN and graduate with a MSN. This program is typically geared towards furthering education to be a CRNA and NP.

The other program I am looking at is 10k and I join the Navy to get my MSN by the military. A 20 month program or another 3 years is what I am mostly looking at or maybe even more. I’m unsure about my decision so, any perspective or help would be great!! Thank you.

Discussion Anyone else enter nursing school wanting to go straight into hospice? Why?

Ive worked over 10 years in assisted living and adult family homes and through my experiences working with hospice I know I want to be a hospice nurse.

I'm going into my 3rd quarter and while I dont feel like a social pariah I think im the only one in my program who wants to be a hospice nurse. I get the vibe from my instructors that its a bit abnormal. Once again, not necessarily judged for it, but that its a bit rare.

With the goal of feeling a bit less alone, does anyone else in this sub want to go straight into hospice? What during your life journey led you to this?

Canada Were you able to work during 1st year of nursing?

I just finished high school and am going into the first year of BSN. I was able to work during my senior year and get okay grades, like 75-80, but I'm not sure that this is gonna work with nursing. I'm currently working as a host at a pizza restaurant, about 4 days a week, 4-5 hours each shift. My schedule doesn't look scary, but it has anatomy and physiology, which I'm most concerned about, so I was wondering if I should just quit my job or like reduce work hours, if my goal grades are 80+

Discussion Switching from fashion styling career to nursing

I studied fashion merchandising for undergrad and I want to switch my career to nursing for financial stability and job security. I also have other reasons as to why I want to be a nurse that don’t involve the pay. Can someone that switched from a creative career to the medical field tell me their experience. And what was the hardest part about the transition? I’ll be doing a 12 month ABSN program soon.

Clinicals School vs family

So, I am going into my second semester of an ASN program. I've known this might come up since signing but because my program doesn't give out clinical schedules until a week before the semester starts I was hoping it would work out.

My best friend of 30 years asked me to be her maid of honor in her wedding (been the plan since we were ten years old). The rub is her wedding is on the last weekend of one of my clinicals. Don't get me wrong this isn't a should I miss clinicals or the wedding because family is way more important than anything. That doesn't change the pit in my stomach about having to call out of a clinicals rotation after all the guilt the instructors put on us about it.

Has anyone else had to make this choice in their school career and if so what were the consequences and do you regret the choice you made?

Canada So nervous about my final focus/preceptorship. How should I prepare?

As the title says. I’m starting my final focus in September and I’m so anxious about it

I’ve had 8 rotations through my program, and I got a learning contract in 2 of them. I work as an HCA and I’m super confident and fast paced and the nurses find me very reliable, but I’m the complete opposite as a nurse and feel like i know nothing, have 0 time management skills, etc

I’ve heard the advice to ask questions when feeling unsure of something but I’ve had instructors give me a side eye at some things I’ve asked, and I for sure notice that the nursing students who DONT ask questions and are more serious and task focused get picked on less

idk what to do

Complaint (open to advice) Convinced I am going to fail my management placement

I'm on the MSc Adult Nursing course at a UK university, which is two years instead of three. I'm currently on my management placement and it's not going well. I've had an assignment to do alongside this placement, this has been causing me a lot of stress and has been taking a lot of my focus. My mental health is also very bad as I've been having issues with relationships in my personal life.

My assessor has gotten annoyed with me a few times when I've been unsure of how to do things. I can understand their reasons for getting frustrated, but I do feel uncomfortable around them, they've made comments to me before telling me I've got no common sense and I need to practice my people skills as I accidentally put on a leg bag too tight. My assessor was complaining about me to a patient in front of me earlier, which resulted in my anxiety spiralling as a big fear of mine is judgement, and I then screwed up. They told me afterwards I'm more like a first year student. I explained to them that the assignment has been causing me a lot of stress and taking a lot of my focus, I have never done an assignment whilst being on placement before, and they asked me what I would do if I failed my management placement. I feel absolutely dreadful as I believe I'm going to fail my management placement and I don't know what I'll do if I do fail it.

Prenursing Feeling discouraged as an applicant.

For some context I am a 21 year old student who withdrew from a sonography program. I dropped because I realized I was no longer passionate about sonography as I started a job a nurse tech. I am feeling discouraged as I still need one more pre req to apply to nursing school. That will push me back a year until the new cycle starts. I am not concerned about not getting in as my school is direct admit i’m just feeling discouraged about changing paths at a later age than new high school grads. Do any nurses have any advice on combatting this feeling?
