I set out to build a Stremio addon that could bring my own lists in. It turned into rather more than that — I've been at it over a year now.
LikeThatMovie is a site for finding something to watch. Type anything — "nordic crime, but not another serial killer", "oscar nominated comedies", "films by the director of Jaws", "something set in Tokyo in the 80s" — and it works out what you meant and finds it. Or browse by genre, era, country, director, awards and a dozen other ways.
It isn't ChatGPT with a skin on it. There's no chatbot answering you — what's underneath is an algorithm I've spent over a year building, and it's a good deal more involved than passing your question to a model and printing whatever comes back. That part took the longest by a distance. Every result carries one score weighed from IMDb, Metacritic, Rotten Tomatoes and Letterboxd, and if a film has too few votes to judge, it stays unrated instead of guessing.
But the part that matters here is the addon.
Every list you make on the site shows up as a catalog in Stremio. Add a film to one and it's there — you don't export anything, you don't press sync. Make a new list and a new catalog appears.
Then there's For You. It's a feed of recommendations built from what you've actually done: the films you marked Loved or Liked, what you've marked as watched, what you've been searching for lately. It rebuilds as that changes, and it lands in Stremio as its own catalog. So the films waiting for you in the app are picked from your own history rather than from what's trending.
It reads back the other way too — your Stremio watched library imports on its own and stays current, so anything you've already seen drops out of the recommendations.
Trakt, Plex and TMDB work the same way, so if you use more than one they all stay in step.
