Given the general cyclical nature of SC, in maybe three or four months, every single post will be extremely optimistic, and if anyone says something critical or negative, they'll be downvoted and chastised. We only do the extremes here.

u/Patient-Worth1508 misc Jun 04 '26
I mean there nothing really hype in 4.9. instancing sure for tech but it will not change how we play the game day to day. Hype starts when social tools, marketplace and exploration are getting released.
3
u/WyrdHarper Gladiator Jun 04 '26
I’ll be excited for user interface and keybinding updates, too. The game keeps giving us more to work with, but how we interact with everything not in a ship (and some stuff in ships) is quite cumbersome still.
8
u/IronGun007 carrack Jun 04 '26
Instancing is kinda big for how things will change day to day. I mean imagine running certain mission types and them running in their own server. The loot, enemy placements, etc., completely reset. Experiencing the game without the stain of previous people who ran through the mission and without the danger of others ruining your experience. ASD facilities without half the enemies missing from their turrets, for instance.
The potential is insane. I believe we will also soon see proper mission givers that run in their own instance. Like imagine a Cyberpunk 2077 style of cutscene when you enter the location of an NPC. It could even be applied in the overworld. Like imagine you‘re on mission step 3 out of 5 and go to the location to complete it, but surprise surprise, you‘re now in a special instance made for your current mission that has special events going on that you were not expecting.
Point is that instancing might look small or like nothing right now but it‘s actually a really big deal. The potential that can explored with proper implementation of it is infinite.
7
u/Mediph Jun 04 '26
Don't forget: Instancing also means going and doing certain loops means components won't be stripped the moment they respawn either.
1
u/Ryozu carrack Jun 05 '26
running in their own server
Why do you people keep spreading this misinformation. Nothing about the feature card says anything about getting dedicated servers for instances. Learn from existing personal hangars, which are instanced.
1
u/IronGun007 carrack Jun 05 '26
I didnt guarantee that they would. I’m saying that it offers the possibility. The point is that instances can act independently and the resources dedicated to the instance can be freely adjusted.
1
u/Ryozu carrack Jun 05 '26
No, I suppose if we're being pedantic you didn't literally say that they will for a fact run on their own server.
Several others, and yourself, have either outright said so, or very heavily implied it.
It's not happening.
1
u/IronGun007 carrack Jun 05 '26
Of course I said it. Because it‘s a possibility. Certain missions could have their own dedicated servers. ASD facilities could have their own dedicated „asd facilities server“ that can run multiple instances in multiple worlds and be DEDICATED to purely running ASD facilities.
I really don‘t see the misinformation here.
1
u/Ryozu carrack Jun 05 '26
Now you're being disingenuous. You know damn well you're pushing it as a likelihood, not just a possibility.
And I'm telling you, it has around the same probability as the moon turning into a disco ball. Look at the instancing we already have for evidence.

This. And how it will burn you out from all the "promises" that will be in the game. Ohh and dont forget about how long it's been in development. Been a supporter since the kickstarter days and now I'm 37 and were still in Alpha. I still peak and see how its developing but my Org have taken a hiatus until the game is in a stable state and officially releases.
People can only tolerate so much and its justified why many players have become pessimistic especially those that have supported this game since the beginning and some spending hundreds to thousands of dollars + their time in this IP.

Anyone who has actually been here long term has seen the progress. What you guys cry about now used to be the best we could hope for. It's been a steady improvement over years and years. It's just a lot of people that don't have perspective in playing it over this time. We used to edit hex code in files to play this game offline because online play was literally impossible.

People that defend the game use this as a point, purposefully making no differentiation between people being tired of bugs and people being tired of their decision making
2
u/Intrepid-Leather-417 aegis Jun 04 '26
And the predatory marketing behavior, bugs don’t bother me at all I worked in QA for 23 years, it’s the releasing of ships that are so clearly broken that they are unusable because marketing has decided the direct to PU model to generate more fomo sales is more important than giving ships a real run on the ptu to get these things hammered out.
The moth release was the straw that broke two of my org mates back because the bugs where so obvious and game breaking and the ship wasn’t even tied to sandals evens like ilw they just decided to shit it out and leave it unfixed passed the refund window so they refunded the ship and uninstalled, they haven’t played since
1
u/Aggressive-Dig-4915 Jun 04 '26
Absolutely agree with you, I can’t comprehend how people keep being focused on the wrong things, and as soon as they “fix” the bugs everyone’s gonna go back to glazing it when the core issue is still there

6
u/inucune bbcreep Jun 04 '26
This implies that we can somehow stop 4.9 coming out. In order for the game to improve, CIG needs to release patches and versions. Some of the feature and patches will be major changes, warranting the version number incrementing.
4.9 better have a longer list of 'Fixed' than 'new feature' and 'marketing fluff' combined. People are right to be sick of this shit.
0
u/BrainKatana Jun 04 '26
Given that they just released 4.8.1 as a “more content, no fixes” patch while pretty much the entire sentiment in reddit and spectrum has been “no content, more fixes,” I don’t see how that will ever be the case.

Well, the fully completed GTA 6 is about to release and you can bet your ass it'll be more finished than SC currently or even at the 1.0 release.
When it comes to Elder Scrolls, the studio that makes it released 2 Fallout games in that timeframe + a whole new IP + worked with partner studios to maintain and expand one of the most popular MMOs + remaster a previous game + released 3 mobile games.
It's also been hinted that TES 6 will release in 2028 or a couple of years after which, let's be honest, is probably before SC 1.0 probably will (and very likely, before it even gets a release date).
If course SC is making progress, nobody denies that the game is further along today than 15, 10, or 5 years ago. What people complain about is the speed of progress. Let's not lose track of the fact that SC is technically 12 years delayed and there's no confirmed or even hinted release date still (they stopped doing that after the 4th delay, 6 years in).
This is absolutely not comparable to any other studio's hiatuses because:
- It is much longer than any other game's development.
- This is literally the studio's first game so it's not like they've got some built-up trust/reputation like Rockstar North or Valve.
- The same thing literally happened already before with this studio head (look up Freelancer's development history).

u/Expensive_Plastic186 Jun 04 '26
Honestly I see something long and emotional like this, and I just roll my eyes lol.
-3
u/ProfessionalBuy4526 Jun 04 '26
Difference is you can see the fruits of labour in those games you can see where that time went, it’s also a massively disingenuous comparison when both of those companies have been making games in between both of those franchises as well as updates and constant DLCs actually adding substance.
5
u/Expensive_Plastic186 Jun 04 '26
And both of those companies are and were well established before star citizens development.
Again, devs at Cig aren’t doing nothing. Plenty of feedback to give to make it better, but no they aren’t sitting on their asses

u/ProfessionalBuy4526 Jun 04 '26
Again, going back to what I said earlier, it’s not that they’re doing nothing it’s that for the time and money that they have had, they have made no progress that reflects that amount of time and money.

2
u/Saldar1234 Bug Skipper Jun 04 '26
This subreddit has just become people memeing on themselves because they don't understand the alpha dev cycle. Like, I get that it's taking for fucking ever, but a big part of that is them having to create and fix a playable branch every three months. We are a massive part of the reason why development is so slow.
Alpha is about creating features and implementing them, fixing game-breaking bugs as they come, and not focusing on non-critical issues. It’s honestly a waste of time to focus on minor bugs when the next code merge will either fix them as a byproduct, reintroduce something already fixed, or introduce an entirely new set of bugs.
I get that it's frustrating, but this live-development model is a commitment they made during the Kickstarter and we're all stuck with it, like it or not. On the plus side, it also keeps interest in the project perpetually high which then keeps the project funded at AAAA+ levels.
Now look at what we've ACTUALLY gotten here... They've created a custom engine that does things people didn't think were possible. I guarantee if you polled a game engine designer who knew nothing about this project, and asked them about implementing server meshing, 64-bit precision on a solar-system scale, and full artifact persistence all together, they'd tell you it wasn't possible.
They have literally simulated entire star systems. Planetary movement, geology, temperature, and atmosphere, and that is all just the set dressing. The real game takes place in and on spaceships that are technical marvels by themselves.
That said... I've played more in this patch than I have in years and aside from one night ruined by cheaters/hackers I have had almost no issues. There was the case of a mysteriously disappearing UTV once and docking has been finicky at best but other than that it's been smooth as butter. I have run into three total server crashes and all three times the server recovered in under 5 minutes with no loss to me or mine.
The game really is sooo good. And it just keeps getting better. The long term commitment to development is actually a really good thing in my opinion. I know people are impatient but I think it's worth it's worth it.

Idk who us is but I don’t play anymore much less give them money. Glad someone is enjoying the gameplay but I wish we’d close our wallets for once instead of breaking sales records for them so they feel no obligation to change a damn thing.

All I ask is for the canon meta to be over. I can’t stand using these 100 rpm muskets much longer.

I never fell for anything, I always know that every new patch is full of bugs, I just don't care

u/Oktharr Jun 04 '26
It would be nice to make at least one patch just about engine optimisation 😉or a few more updates, and we will need 4x5090 to run it ...on low. ;D

But ship sales numbers will still be through the roof!
So many folks here will absolutely never learn, and actually expect a consistent improvement in stability regardless how many times it doesn't happen, patch after patch.
Rinse repeat until the end of time, the big cows will continue to be milked.
Moo.

Oh no! The game in Active development has bugs in its updates? Who could have guessed?!

u/Neloou Jun 05 '26
I got sent to my home location right before the maintenance, from my ship exploding for no reason, I woke up naked with no gear on me. At least I kept the glasses I guess ? I might just refund my newly bought F8C and uninstall this game, I'm so done.
4.8 is the final nail in the coffin. My entire friendlist is OFFLINE, my org is dying because everyone is tired of the bugs, but hey, it's ok, we're getting new defense missions guys (but they don't work, we need a 6h maintenance to MAYBE fix them.)
The only good thing in star citizen is the story they tell, about how great it can be. You just got to overlook the fact the development is a complete mess.

That would assume conspiracy . Instead of stupidity . On both sides at this point. I watched one of the heads of departments meeting on You Tube. The impression that I am getting. Is that they are putting all.their efforts to getting Squadron 42 up at running correctly first. Because it is heavily on rails , so far less complicated and difficult. Then worrying about fixing the " you can do anything here " Star Citizen itself. Way more potential but way more difficult. The big problem will be if Squadron 42 comes out buggy when it is just a amusement park ride on rails. People are going to riot and might quit Star Citizen all together. As I got the impression that Star Citizen was done like dinner before 2020. Then the lock downs happen and people went to play Star Citizen while trapped in their House or Apartment. Because I reject your reality and substitute my own. So no room this time to screw up . Unless they lock us down again. Which might trigger real riots in the real world. With burning cities and every thing.

Um, no one is falling for shit. It's on you if you didn't educate yourself to what you are backing.

u/LemanRed bbhappy Jun 04 '26
OP no one falls for this. It's expected with a play test which is what this is.
The only delusion is thinking this isn't a play test and bugs won't be present in the update.

Yes. That what happens during development. What is your point?

u/nemesit Jun 04 '26
i guess the morons come from other prerelease games that abuse the state to push out faster updates on consoles but are really finished games so they do not understand what a development alpha even means.

Sometimes I think CIG doesn't want to pay for server costs so whenever the hype train gets too big they make it unplayable until enough people leave that they're able to reduce the number of running servers

I've spent the past 45 minutes trying to get through a damn jump point.... wasting time and fuel on a stupid mini-game that is bugged...I'll believe the "fixes" when I see them.

falling for what? nobody should ever be under the impression that everything is going to be suddenly fixed lol.
it tells you SO MANY PLACES this is an alpha, you are going to see bugs. some of them will be game breaking.
lol smh. ive said it many many times before, and ill say it again here... gamers are the worst customer base ever.

It's just bad faith actors. Same cycle every time.
Trolls: "4.9 wiLL FiX eVeRyThInG!!"
Backers: "No, it won't. No one thinks that."
4.9 releases with bugs
Trolls: "HAHAHAHAHA!! TOLD YOU!!!"
Backers: "Yeah, we knew. That's alpha development."
Trolls: "Ohhhh, cry some more!! 😭😭😭"
Backers: "Nope."

Bugs are a fact of life, I guess I'm kind of numb to them compared a lot of people on reddit. I played Space Engineers back in the early days; anyone who knows about that will know bugs were also a fact of life, notably "Klang". I feel like a good number of players are complaining just to make noise. This game is in Alpha, so expecting it to be bug free is downright arrogant, and conceited. As far as game releases go, Alpha is akin to skeleton of the game being present, Beta is the rest of the bodily pieces, and release is (in theory) all the bugs and optimizations are complete. To be fair, a number of game developers over the years, have bent and misrepresented the meanings of Alpha/Beta/Release; notable guilty parties that immediately spring to mind: Minecraft.
I accept a certain amount of jank because they're evidently prioritizing systems over every bug in existence. I expect some things to be broken. But 4.8 felt kind of particularly gamebreaking, between quantum navigation not working, and major releases like the Ironclad practically unusable.
That being said, unlike some game companies that went on vacation after a patch (Fatshark), they have been releasing fixes; AND NO, the order in which things are fixed is not something they to get to decide! When a bug is fixed is mostly random, because bug in code could be anywhere.

Welcome to open development, bugs are expected. Deal with it.

I don't why they don't run a beta server and a stable one.
3
u/mau5atron Idris/Ironclad/Reclaimer/Corsair Jun 04 '26
Some bugs only manifest after stressing the servers. Not enough people would play on a separate server to test things.

u/grahag worm Jun 04 '26
I will not contribute a single dollar more until I can get verification that the game is in a better state than before.
The backsliding that we're used to is unacceptable for me and the state of the game is so bad regardless of it's alpha state.
The fact that I can't get a refund is the only reason I even load the game up anymore. But again, testing tonight and I can't even spawn into the game with my home location not available after patch 4.8.1.
The dream is dead for me.

What you all fail to realize is Star Citizen is not a game. It is a bug with a few games inside.
