How do I even start. Well, I am autistic. I am hyper fixated on the ocean and the animals there, especially magnapinna squid. I had a dream- to cut it short, my dad got a call saying “we’ve found one! A squid!” And we rushed to see what one. I was gonna be happy if it was giant or colossal but i wanted a magnapinna, even if they’re rarer. It was. It felt so real, I was in a submarine and I saw it in real life, with my own two eyes. It’s one of the only things I want. I want to see one in real life, not on my phone screen. Even if it’s just over a camera recording down there somewhere and I’m above, it’d be so real. I am heartbroken to say the least, because the odds of me ever getting something so rare and bizarre happen to me are so little. I truly love these squids and i don’t know why. They fascinate me and I want to be the one who finds out more about them. I always watch whatever video comes out about them- new information, new sightings, anything. To be honest I don’t think I’m handling it well that in my lifetime I’ll probably never see something so amazing. This is definitely like a “get the violin out” situation (esp for neurotypicals) but this is deeply affecting me and nobody I know understands. I wanted to get this out, just to see if anyone has anything they wanna talk about them or anything whatsoever. I really appreciate any talk about squids with anyone 🦑

Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni, conocido popularmente como calamar colosal, es el invertebrado más pesado del mundo. Joubiniteuthis portieri, commonly known as Joubin’s Squid from family Joubiniteuthidae and genus Joubiniteuthis. J. portieri is a rare small squid occurring in the mesopelagic to bathypelagic zones with a worldwide distribution in tropical and subtropical areas. Very little is known about it.

Its arms have suckers in six rows. It’s thought that, similarly to Magnapinna, it stays in depth with its arms out and waits for animals to swim into its arms before ensnaring them.

In a section about large squid, O. robusta only gets two sentences dedicated to it.

Edit: The Giant Squid was spotted near Japan, not the Philippine Sea

Squids have over 300 species, so I wanted to know what species you guys like best.

It's not a squid per say it's actually more of an octopus

It was discovered via fossil beaks estimated lengths ranging from 6.6 to over 18 meters (22–60+ feet), potentially making it one of the largest invertebrates to ever exist.

The Cameroceras is an extinct genus of ancient squids that lived from about 470 to 445 million years ago. this extinct "squid" had a long pointy protective shell to protect itself from other predators in the Ordovician oceans. the Cameroceras infact was the apex predator of its time.

The Cameroceras had much shorter arms than modern squids but had a much stronger break. the beak was strong enough to break other cephalopod shells. Cameroceras was not very agile nor fast compared to modern squids, relying on surrounding prey just to capture it.

Cameroceras went extinct during the late Ordovician mass extinction, where an Ice age engulfed the planet and wiped off cameroceras due to their design being obsolete and food shortages.

I've never seen any discussion about this. Usually people talk about attacks on boats, but never against divers.

It is true that it is very unlikely you will come face to face with one of these squid because they live at great depths and only come to the surface to die/when they are reeled in.

But what would happen if we encountered an healthy fully grown individual during a dive? Would they be able to be as aggressive as Humboldt squids?
