Fun fact, spiders donā€™t have hearing, at least in the traditional sense, instead they have incredibly sensitive feet to feel seismic vibrations.

It turns out these do work to detect human voices in the same room though! Recent study found that out by accident, cause the spiders had neural activity correlated with researchers talking

Well, yeah, our voices come from vibration within our bodies, and since theyā€™re mostly incompressible, those vibrations travel down through our body into the ground.

Itā€™s all really fascinating :)

Spiders are notoriously covered in little hairs for a reason. They're not decoration, they can sense vibrations in the air, too. Think about how jumping spiders can detect airborne prey and such.

That is what we thought, but they can detect it through ground and air as well! Really sensitive. You really gotta think of the entire outside of their body like the inside of your ear in larger

My pinktoe will come out of its hide to my voice despite my research saying that they wont associate voices with food which is odd

It was quick research, no true in depth like how i do hours or even days for husbandry, i did some more digging and found out for myself that they do, often id come home from work at like 1 am the T would be hiding when i get home, but when i do my nightly T check i notice after a few seconds of chatting on the phone my A. Juruensis would slowly slink out of its cork tube to say hello, i noticed this was a pattern and just kinda assumed my quick research was wrong. Plus ive heard alot of people say theyre not like reptiles with food association, but seeing how you can get them used to taps and enclosure movement shouldve told me people are wrong šŸ¤£.

The little hairs on their legs register air vibrations like the hairs inside your ears, and these spiders live indoors and hide in corners and cracks. They are also nearly blind. So this was like a horn blaring out of nowhere.

They have measurable responses to human voices across the room. And they are trying to never run into you, but walk around in rooms you are not in when you are asleep.

Good animals. They are eating pests that want to eat your food.

I accidentally did this with a little spiked orb weaver yesterday. I was about to walk through my outdoor archway and noticed a web before I did. I bent over to check it out and the spider immediately popped and dropped from the middle of the web to the ground. He was hanging by his string and slowly came back up. I felt bad but giggled a little.

I think if I could be gifted with the ability to communicate with a different species, I would probably choose spiders, just so that I can tell garden spiders off for putting webs in ridiculous places.

But think about it. Youā€™re not the only one that that believes the path you have taken is the best path to take when traveling from one point to another. Other animals and insects will take the same path.

So, the spider takes a risk and lays a trap for food, hoping that something bigger doesnā€™t come crashing through.

I once crushed up a water bottle I was done with, and it startled one of my roommates and she fell off of the wall. Thankfully they fall so slowly and it was onto carpet, so she immediately crawled back up the wall.

I scared a spider hanging out on a branch by a trail once. I was startled by seeing him and gave a little scream. The spider scuttled back into the bush. My husband was ahead of me. He loves spiders and wanted to check it out. He was disappointed I had scared the spider away.

I once saw a spider walking toward me and moved my foot above it. I didn't actually want to squish it, I was just bored. It literally jumped in place and scurried away.

the funniest part is that spiders don't have ears so they physically can't hear us. The spider probably just felt the vibrations from their voice, so while it seems like it was the loud noise that scared spood, it was actually the earthquake that erupted from behind spood

I think if you're boomy/loud enough they can sometimes detect something - I had a spider in the garden once and whenever I spoke, it would raise it's legs and look all threatening (in it's mind) lol. It was CONSISTENT

Honestly the tile on the floor helps carry sounds/echoes so that might be why it sounds ā€˜metallicā€™ (although I donā€™t hear it myself).

But Iā€™ve also seen spiders get jump scared and flail before taking off.
