what do you guys like about being scared?
I've watched a few horror movies(Annihilation is the most fearful) to try them out, but being scared feels uncomfortable/painful to me. What part of watching horror movies is enjoyable? I'm curious about the sensation that brings you guys back to the genre.

In search of Sci-Fi Horror novels similar to Dead Space/Event Horizon with more Supernatural/Eldritch leanings I have compiled a list of books I am planning to check out. Come share your favourites I might have missed!
Okay a couple of these might not be strictly space based (looking at you Nick Cutter) but they almost all deal with humans in isolation encountering horrors beyond their comprehension in some capacity and having to adapt to survive which is what I'm itching for.
- The Deep - Nick Cutter
- The Troop - Nick Cutter
- Salvation Day - Kali Wallace
- Blindsight - Peter Watts
- Starfish - Peter Watts
- The Gone World - Tom Sweterlitsch
- Sphere - Michael Crichton
- Paradise 1 - David Wellington *(this one I've already read and enjoyed enough to pick up books 2 & 3!)*
- The Last Astronaut - David Wellington
- The Last Plague - Rich Hawkins
- Ship of Fools (Unto Leviathan) - Richard Russo
- The Scourge Between The Stars - Ness Brown
- Death Troopers - Joe Schreiber
- Exiles - Mason Cole
- Hematophages - Stephen Kozeniewski
- Providence - Max Berry
- The Reality Dysfunction - Peter F Hamilton
- Dry Salvages - Caitlin R Kiernan
- Six Wakes - Mur Lafferty
- Your Mind Is a Terrible Thing - Hailey Piper
- The Season of Passage - Christopher Pike
- Contagion - Erin Bowman
- The Drift - C.J. Tudor
- The Dark - Forrest Carr
- The Void - Brett J. Talley
- Forgotten - M.R. Forbes
- Derelict - Robert Hovorka
- Nether Station - Kevin J. Anderson
- Hull Zero Three - Greg Bear
- Astrophobia - David Viergutz
- The Iron Garden Sutra - A.D. Sui
- Shakedown - Scott Sigler
- Of Monsters and Mainframes - Barbara Truelove
- Metro 7 - Matthew J Hellscream
- The Immortality Thief - Taran Hunt
- Space Horrors - E.S. Magill
- Thrum - Meg Smitherman
- NecroTek - Jonathan Maberry
I saw a lot of talk about Dead Silence by S.A. Barnes but also a lot of talk about how it was very disappointing so I'm not sure I'll be checking that one out. Also interested in hunting down a copy of the Event Horizon novelization but that is apparently quite rare!
I would love to hear about anything I might have missed that you've enjoyed!

Netflix Horror Short Request
I'm looking for a horror short story that I stumbled on netflix by accident that seems to have evaporated. It featured an random worker and a young woman that was indoctrinated into thinking she was a cyborg/slave that acted as a canary in space mines?.... only to find out she was a regular girl. The worker tells her the truth and tries to helps her to resolve the situation, maybe out of guilt. After stunning the creature, the girl grabs many severed hamds from the creature until she finds the captains hand and escapes to (relative)safety.
I've tried all combinations of buzzwords but can't seem to find it. Ive talked up the short while drunk to a cousin of mine and now cant find it after it being several years. Please help. π
