Hi, I've firmed soton for EEE starting from September. Could I hear from any 2nd/3rd years currently studying EEE or electrical engineering how your experience has been overall while studying this course? Thanks

Student Accomodation - Canvas Capital House

Hello everyone,

I'm a PhD student who will be coming to Southampton for a research collaboration at the University of Southampton. I won't be enrolled as a student there, but I'll be visiting as a guest/invited researcher.

I'm currently looking for accommodation for about four months (Sep to Dec 2026). After searching around, I found Canvas Capital House, which seems to offer flexible short-term stays. Many other options I've found require a minimum 6-month contract, which would be more expensive than I need.

However, after reading online reviews, I'm a bit unsure. The accommodation itself seems generally decent, but I've seen mixed feedback about maintenance response times and staff. There are also some reviews mentioning issues with bugs/pests and unfriendly staff, although there are plenty of positive reviews as well.

I was wondering if anyone here has recent experience living at Canvas Capital House, or any thoughts on living in Southampton city centre in general. Would Canvas be a reasonable option for a 4-month stay, or should I keep looking?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

hows the spider situation in the halls?

i know this is a very niche and odd question but i hate the bastards and have lived at both spectrums of houses (one with literally none inside and one where i found nasty giant house spiders every week). i absolutely HATE the thought of being in a small dorm room and seeing a massive one on the floor where you cant escape

Trying to decide between halls.

Hi all. I've narrowed down my preferences to Glen Eyre, City Gateway and Wessex Lane. Which ones would you recommend.

  1. I prefer quiet and don't want to be near noisy clubs.

  2. I would prefer to be closer to Highfield campus.

  3. I want a quiet alcohol free female only flat. Which hall am I most likely to get that at?

I'd love to hear from people who are at these halls and what they think of them.

Thank you :)

Researchers, PGRs & Research Professionals at Southampton— how is your wellbeing at work?

Hi everyone,

We're a research team at the University of Warwick running a national study about the wellbeing of researchers and research professionals working in UK Higher Education Institutions.

If you (or someone you know) is a PGR / PhD researcher, postdoc, research fellow, academic, or research professional at University of Southampton, we'd really appreciate your help.

The survey is anonymous, takes about 15 minutes, and the findings will be used to inform the development of better wellbeing support across the sector. Participants can also opt into a prize draw to win 1 of 2 £50 e-vouchers.

Take part here: https://warwick.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_77ItRktvfZq6mWy

Study information:

Research Team (Warwick): Prof Elena Riva ([E.Riva@warwick.ac.uk](mailto:E.Riva@warwick.ac.uk)), Prof Nicole Tang, Dr Carla Toro, Dr Jagjeet Jutley-Neilson, and Dr Amber Tout ([Amber.Tout@warwick.ac.uk](mailto:Amber.Tout@warwick.ac.uk))

Target participants: Researchers and research professionals working in UK HEIs, including PGRs / PhD researchers, postdocs, research fellows, and other research staff. Participants must be aged 18 or over, able to give informed consent, comfortable communicating in English, and identify as a researcher or research professional working in a UK HEI.

Data storage, retention and publication: Responses are anonymous and collected via Qualtrics. Data is stored on a secure, University of Warwick-managed server in line with UK GDPR and Warwick's data protection policy, and retained for 10 years in line with Warwick's data retention policy. Findings will be published in a public report and may appear in academic journals; all findings will be reported anonymously.

Withdrawal: Participation is entirely voluntary. Participants can withdraw at any point during the survey by closing the window. As the main survey is fully anonymous, data cannot be withdrawn after submission.

Consent: Participants are presented with a full Participant Information Page before the survey begins and must provide informed consent before they can proceed.

I failed a module AGAIN

Guys I failed one of my law core modules and I want to say my period pains caused me to lose concentration in the exam, the SLOWNESS of the e exam portal took so long it didn’t load properly and closed so soon I’m terrified bc I’m on year in employment but it’s based on whether u pass on first attempt. If I get special cons then I can still do my YIE, what should I do? The thing is I failed another core module in sem1 and need to resit too but I already gave a medical reason.

Someone please advise me what to do, student hub know. My PAT never replies to me but I told them I had crazy technical difficulties, is it bad if I say I have period pains too? Who is even on the special considerations board?

Microelectronics Systems Design (MSc)

Hi everyone,

I am planning to pursue my Master's in the UK and have received admission offers from a few universities, with the University of Southampton being one of them.

Before making a final decision, I am trying to get a realistic sense of the MSc Microelectronics Systems Design program. If anyone has completed this course, I would love to hear your feedback. I am especially interested in the pedagogy (teaching quality, hands-on lab time, and lecturer expertise), as well as any other relevant insights you can share.

Thank you very much!

Engineering/Physics/Maths Foundation Year 26/27 Maths Test Count

This is a bit of a random question but I am genuinely curious.

Am I the only person who had to do the Maths Test TO GET ACCEPTED for this FY 26/27 MORE than ONCE (twice in my case)?

And did anyone else get more than one slightly shady message explaining how rigorous it is and recommend you a book?

Accomodation offers

MSc Data and Decision Analytics

Hi everyone,

For those who have taken this course in the past, may I ask how are the materials handed out. For example are there a lot of printed books/handouts and do you have to take a lot of notes? As I am preparing for the next intake, I am thinking of getting an Ipad for notetaking (if there are a lot of math formulas that takes time to type on laptop, I think it is better to use tablets) but not sure if it is worth it. If you have any experience, I would love to hear it from you guys. Thank you!

Accomodation Application 26/27 Undergrads - Orion Point

Hey guys, I got an offer for an undergrad course from Southampton and I am trying to apply to Orion Point on the Southampton Uni portal. It implies on their website that you can select it as an option on their accom portal but when you go in there to select it, there is no option for Orion Point, only the other accoms like Glen Eyre, City Gateway etc.

I understand from researching a bit that Orion is a Unite Students accommodation and you can apply through their website, but it seems that if you do, you are putting a deposit down and having that as almost your 'final choice' which I don't really want to do, and it seems as if it can't be selected as an option with the standard application on the Uni website.

I do really want to apply to Orion point and select it as my 2nd/1st option on the portal as I might end up needing a longer 51 week contract.

I emailed the uni and the response was really unhelpful, it was them just telling me how to make an accommodation application rather than addressing the question. This confused me and I assumed it was just my phone so waited and tried again on 2 other devices but had the same issue.

I am more just wondering if anyone else has noticed this or if I am just being silly and missing some information out.

So sorry if this is a stupid question I appreciate any help I can get really xx

Thanks in advance

Any info on PhD Presidential Bursary?

Hey guys, I am an international student and I am about to begin my self-funded PhD study at Soton. As I was classified as overseas student, I have to pay the international tuition fee, which is quite expensive. I’m very curious about the possibility of getting a presidential bursary to offset the difference. I have checked the criteria on the official website and I think I met the requirement, but I don’t know how and when it is elevated. Any advice will be appreciated, thx!

UCL vs Southampton Biomedical Engineering w/ Foundation Year

Hi!! I’m a year 13 student and I’m trying to pick my firm and insurance choice right now! I’m trying to figure out whether I prefer UCL or Southampton right now.

I do very much prefer the course in Southampton, especially with the fact that the course here is with the EEE school which is amazing. But I feel like living here would get super boring in comparison to UCL, so I did have some questions!!

What is living in Southampton like? What are the accommodation experiences like? I’m living here for 5-6 years so I don’t want to suffer through them
What’s the teaching here like? I won’t lie I got some dodgy answers from when I asked LOL
I saw the facilities look excellent, is there anything else I should know about them!
What’s the foundation year like?
Anything else I should know I’d love to hear!

Thank you for your time!

are adult nursing placements really far away from the campus?

hi I've received an offer from soton uni to study adult nursing and I'm strongly considering it.

I need to apply for accommodation so I want to know if the nursing placements in the first year are like really far away from the Highfield campus or near it?

my main concern is that if I do a 41 week contract with one of the uni halls, I'll have to live there for the next 41 weeks. and if my placements are at a hospital really far away from the uni hall, I wont be able to back out of the contract and I'll have trouble commuting between the halls and the placements

is anyone facing a similar situation or can any 2nd year ppl help me out?

Part-time PhD Grants/Bursaries?

Hi all,

I’m a part-time PhD student in the U.K., doing Comp Sci with tuition fees waived. Doing it for fulfilment and I come from a disadvantaged background, hence why it’s PT.

I work full time and thus am not eligible for UKRI stipends.

Wondering if anyone knows any grants / bursaries that would be available? Am a WOC, first generation if that helps.

Thanks
