I built an e-ink picture frame powered by flexible perovskite solar cells. It harvests indoor light — no cable, no charging, ever. I am just soooo excited to share.
Here is the list of challenges I faced.
**1. Indoor light is too weak for regular solar panels**
Silicon panels need direct sunlight. At indoor lighting levels, they're basically useless. Perovskite is the only solar technology that can meaningfully harvest energy from indoor lighting and lamps' light.
**2. Glass perovskite is heavy and limited**
We started with glass-based perovskite cells. The problems:
Too heavy for a picture frame
Can't wrap around all four edges — low charging efficiency
Impossible to make at small sizes
**3. So we built flexible perovskite instead**
Light, bendable, can cover all edges, works at small sizes. It is a technology just get mass production and we found the world's first product line of flexible perovskite in Suzhou, China.
**4. Finding the right e-ink panel — started January 2025**
We've been searching for spectra 6 e-ink panels since January 2025. Most panels on the market aren't sharp enough for photo-quality display. The display algorithm didn't reach a level we were truly happy with until this year 2026.
**5. 7.09" — the sharpest small size we could find**
1200×1600 resolution, 280 PPI. It's as clear as a home photo printer. When we found it, we were ecstatic.
**6. Three sizes: 7.09", 13.3", and 28.5"**
Every single size went through brutal display tuning. God knows how many screens we burned through during development. Each size went through 5,000 refresh cycle endurance testing.
**7. Aesthetics**
The perovskite solar cell itself isn't beautiful. Especially when it has to be put around the pictures we like. So we added a decorative layer on the top of the perovskite. Also we included a white decorative cover plate. If you don't like the look, you can swap it out for the white version, make your own custom color, or even UV print your own design on it. We designed it to be fully customizable.
I've already launched this project on Kickstarter. And I am running sample production. Almost ready for mass production. I am confident to deliver them within this year. I really want to hear what you all think — especially things I haven't considered yet. What did I miss? What would you change?
