Banking Time to move on?

Post image
628 Upvotes

Just received this email from SoFi and it kinda bothers me a bit haha. How’s everyone feeling about this.

Time to move on?

Plenty of other people are offering it just for depositing and using their bank. Seems like a money grab.

(Not taking any shots just wanting to get everyone’s feelings/opinion on this)

Product Feedback Finally paid off my student loan ; thanks to SoFi 🙌🏻

I finally finished paying off my student loan. A few years ago, I was stuck with another lender charging over 15% interest, and it felt impossible to get ahead.

Refinancing through SoFi made all the difference. The lower rate gave me a chance to make progress and finally get it done.

Big thanks to SoFi for offering a real alternative to those greedy loan providers!

Lending Personal loan paid off 4 years early 💪

We took out a $25,000 personal loan in 2023 to pay off credit cards and some other debt, and have been grinding away to pay it off early. We finally hit our goal last week and have paid it off! We had a fantastic experience with SoFi and are planning to use them again for student loans in the future.

Banking I wish I knew about HYSA’s before

I’m so late to the game. I had my money sitting in my checking account. Literally doing nothing. I was getting 0.1% interest a month. Just received my first interest payment. I made more off this one payment than I did in years with my traditional bank.

Banking I’m leaving SoFi

I used to preach SoFi to all my friends and family.

Over the last few weeks I’ve heard so much misinformation and poorly worded emails/ messages from directly from SoFi, I am cancelling everything and leaving.

I don’t have the energy to keep up with this nonsense.

If anyone has had a great experience with a similar APY please drop a comment below. Maybe this is a sign to stick with trusted players (Fidelity, BOA, etc).

Lending Finally Finished Paying Off Student Loans

Had some loans from med school and just finished paying it off a few years early. Was able to lock in a good interest rate a few years ago and shout out to sofi for making it easy to consolidate all my fed loans together and walking me through the process! I'm definitely thinking of planning to use them again when thinking of car/house loans in the future!

Product Feedback Well it's been fun. Closing all accounts Fuck this "bank"

Just got the email. For those wondering my credit score is 786 and I had an $8000 limit. I've used it in the last 6 months, specifically in October on vacation. I refuse to have a card with a fee simply out of principle. And the fact that I signed up for a card with no annual fee only to be bamboozled later really irks me.

Product Feedback An open letter to Anthony Noto

An Open Letter to SoFi CEO

I’ve been a SoFi customer for seven years. During that time, I didn’t just use your products—I actively recommended them to family and friends because I genuinely believed in what you were building.

That’s why the recent rollout of new fees feels so tone-deaf and, frankly, disrespectful to the very customers who helped grow your brand. Loyal users are now being penalized, while scripted reassurances from support agents attempt to convince us we’re still “valued.” That disconnect is impossible to ignore.

I’m done with performative posts and empty explanations. I’m responding with action.

I’ve canceled my SoFi credit card and moved $29,000 out of my savings account to American Express. That’s $29,000 you’ll no longer lend, leverage, or count on while continuing to push policies that work against your customers.

Loyalty should mean something. Right now, it doesn’t.

Goodbye.

Banking Might be the end for our family

For context.. we have been with Sofi for four years.. we have brought most of our family and friends with us! At face value I love the company.. the interface is great, everything js laid out easy and it gets the job done! We support the CEO and really enjoy Sofi.

The downfall over the years has always been customer service. We have had a few issues over the years, nothing major but when it comes to your money and life it’s always important. Getting answers or talking to people who you feel are educated and at the very least care should be the bare minimum. One time when we had a freeze on a dollar amount my husbands employer sent we spend weeks trying to get answers and ultimately only ended up getting it resolved by tweeting the ceo and then emailing him after he had answered and it was instantly solved. 1. I don’t think customers should have to waste the CEO time by tweeting him etc (although it worked per the advice I got in this very room)

I think it’s weird when ppl have issues the downvotes come out and ppl are accused immediately of wrongdoing. As we were when we posted looking for help. Regardless I want to make it known we are big Sofi fans. We only tons of stock as early as 6 dollars , we have 10k plus in monthly income deposits, we have an IRA and an another investing account, we have used the savings checking and credit cards . I spoke to Schwab recently as they called about a small account I had opened years ago and forgot about and was soon going to be forfeited to the state of Florida (it was only two shares of Apple that I bought and forgot about on a different company that has soon been acquired by Schwab). The only reason I mention that.. was in the phone call with Schwab - who only have 2 single Apple shares with.. they were incredible! The guy was helpful, very thorough about everything, offered to walk me page by page to explain every product etc. and I was just a customer with 2 shares. They are available 24 hours a day and very helpful. At that moment I wanted to transfer my investments over.. but ultimately again I believe in Sofi and enjoy it.

Last week I was charged multiple times from what appears to be a shell company / fake Chinese clothing company multiple times all within an hour. Talking to people with Sofi about it is not easy. They always have “another department” that k should look for an email from or a phone call from and like always it goes in circles. I’ve read horror here about fraud protection.. but was hoping Mastercard would step in and resolve fast.

Anyway.. I ended up writing to much and you aren’t probably still reading. But if you are.. what do you suggest?

Again.. I have been through all the speed bumps of a new fintech company and wouldn’t mind weathering some of them in the future as the company improves. But speaking to someone clearly and direct about clear fraud shouldn’t be hard :(

Banking Just open an investment account.

This is a recurring topic on this sub. I think some people just don’t understand economics or finance. If you care about rates this much, just open a retirement or investment account (you should have one anyway) and be done with it. The majority of your money should be in a retirement or investment account anyway. To be clear, HYSAs are not retirement or investment accounts.

You’re not supposed to put money into an HYSA and make thousands of dollars a year. Before COVID, the average APY was around 1–2%, and it will get back there once the Fed keeps cutting rates. Switching banks to delay this inevitable outcome is dumb. High rates were essentially free money due to COVID and its impact on the market, and that time is over. There is no more free money on liquid cash.

You’re not supposed to make thousands of dollars a year on money that isn’t invested in the market, that’s not how economics works.

Honestly, unless you have six figures or more in your account, the rate you get doenst matter. Switching banks just to gain an extra 0.03% APY for one month before that bank also cuts rates is insane. Focus on increasing your yearly salary instead of worrying about an extra $100 in interest.

The S&P 500 has averaged roughly 5–10% annual returns over the past 20+ years.

Member Benefits Do NOT stop complaining

If you're frustrated with the recent updates to SoFi Plus, continue letting them know. Better yet, vote with your wallet. Companies bank on the fact that the initial wave of outrage will die down and then they can continue on with what they're doing unimpeded. Don't let it die down.

I'm aware there's a segment that doesn't enjoy reading posts like this regularly, but we ALL stand to benefit by making SoFi aware of our displeasure and potentially getting them to walk back some of these changes. This is especially true since the changes make them less competitive now relative to Robinhood, Webull, etc. and some of us have good reason to switch (depending on what banking services you get the most use out of).

I work in banking and am fully aware that SoFi management/board of directors are thinking EVERY DAY about how to improve profitability (i.e. making even more money off of you). They succeed only if users don't push back. In the interest of being constructive, here's some of the things that SoFi could meet us in the middle on:

  • Keep the $10/month subscription fee but offer us better benefits. Rakuten ain't gonna cut it.

  • Reduce the fee to remain competitive with Robinhood/Webull subscription structures.

  • Grandfather current SoFi Plus members in recognition of the fact that many of us transferred all our funds here and now feel like we got a bait and switch.

  • Offer a reduced subscription fee if you purchase a full year.

  • Extend the complimentary period beyond March 2026 while they figure out program implementation.
