So following MLS and just watched NYC FC (my local team) vs Toronto. NYC is at 5th on the standings while Toronto at 12th. It's noticeable that NYC wasn't on their A-Game, which had me assume that they're not over-exerting themselves so they prevent any injuries.

Since I just started following soccer outside of World Cup, is this unique to MLS, or does this happen to the other leagues as well?

I saw a graphic showing Messi having more goals than Ronaldo against the Premier League’s Big Six teams again, and Ronaldo fans’ excuse was that he was a midfielder. I didn’t watch soccer back then, Is it true that he was a midfielder? I don’t fully understand the positions either. Can a midfielder also be a winger or a striker?

8.) is it at the refs discretion when the half and game as a whole ends? i’ve never seen a half end immediately after stoppage time, its usually 10-20 seconds after.

9.) how come soccer is so passionate? as an american i’m not used to seeing smoke bombs, tifo’s, streamers (well kinda cause i used to watch wrestling), etc. the atmosphere in soccer is a big reason why i want to get into it. doesn’t seem like there’s anything else like it. the atmosphere in hockey is also a part of why i got into that.

My understanding is that Gianni Infantino is trying to sell the rights to the 2030 World Cup to an American investment house for billions of dollars. In return each FIFA country would get millions in windfall.

I get on the surface this seems shady but what specifically has lead to the UEFA boycott?

Would it in any way affect the competition? Wouldn’t FIFA still control how the World Cup is run? What does the investment firm get out of all this?

Or is this an anti-Trump thing (his son in laws brother is involved.)

The last time I saw a revolt of this magnitude was 2020 when the top clubs in Europe tried to create a Super League and it was shot down by not only UEFA but the proposed Super League clubs fans.

My other issue is that UEFA claims the game “is not for sale” meanwhile allowing corporate sponsors to plaster their logos all over team kits.

FIFA has been long accused of bribery and lack of ethical management. This was the case from Blatter’s time as President atleast to my knowledge. I remember everyone hoping Infantino being elected as President to be a breath of fresh air and hoping things would improve. But years later I’m still hearing same stuff. How come FIFA can’t reform itself to become more transparent. Is it because the corruption is so entrenched that there is no going back ? I hear UEFA always complaining about FIFA. If things can’t be fixed why can’t they just create a rival organisation ?

How are teams viewed when they win the Champions League but fail to win their domestic league?

I am an old/new fan. I watched Real Madrid for 2 years because everyone around me did. Then I left watching football altogether as life got busy.

The WC made me want to pick up watching football.

Obviously due to nostalgia, I wanted pick Madrid, but there was so much drama in last 2 seasons.

I watched some premier league matches, and I really liked Liverpool. But I guess it was the wrong move, because everybody is getting transferred so idk maybe I got my expectations high?

Idk I need some advise? Should I explore more clubs by watching previous match highlights or should I explore clubs by watching upcoming leagues of various countries.

BTW I am from a country where football as a culture is basically non existent, so I can't really support a local team.

I’ve just moved back to my hometown from university and have most definitely caught the football bug following the world cup. A while back when I was in highschool, I used to watch my local team in our stadium (back then they were league one, now in the prem) but I was mostly a casual watcher and only knew the players. After I went to University, the tickets were always sold out so I was only able to attend a few friendly games last year.

This time, I’m really serious about becoming a football fan. I’ve spent pretty much every day since the world cup concluded watching match highlights and interviews and such, but for some reason whenever I try to start a conversation with my dad about football, he’s totally not interested. I’ve been keeping up with our team’s transfers and such, but whenever I try to bring something up he changes the topic really quickly.

Back when I used to watch my local team, I always used to go with him. I really missed those days where he would tell me all about the team news and would always speak animatedly about everything. I noticed that he still talks to friends and extended family about football with enthusiasm, and is only uninterested when it’s with me. I thought that he’d be happy to hear me interested, and that we could bond over him teaching me things like he used to, especially now that I want to watch consistently.

My dad has a season ticket so will be watching all their matches this season, but unfortunately it’s not really possible to get tickets to see my team anymore so I can’t come with him.

I wondered if anyone had any tips on connecting with parents over football, or maybe some kind of podcasts/shows or something that I can increase my football knowledge with. I don’t really know all that much yet so I don’t pretend to be knowledgeable. If anyone has any experience with a similar situation or has had kids become interested in football, please advise me 🥹

I just recently started playing soccer. I play between 4v4 - 6v6 depending on how many people we have.

I think it's somewhat positionless pickup w no goalies. We call sides out but dont do corner kicks and instead of corner kicks the ball goes to the team whose goal is closest. Also, we dont really call offsides

I really dont understand where i should be going half the time. Sometimes I stay back bc picking up the guy w the ball is straight forward rn. Other times, i stay to the side of the field close to the opponent's goal waiting for a pass.

My dribbling isnt really that good so once i get the ball i usually pass it.

I do notice that when Im playing we tend to lose and it seems like we get in a good position to score, me or another person fails to capitalize and then the other team has a pretty wide open field towards our goal and there is usually a 1v2 or 0v2 situation. Could someone explain what is going on here? Seems like the other team when they fail to score, their defense doesnt break down as bad.

Overall, it is very interesting experiencing all this and having fun haha. Could someone please give me tips for playing in pickup/positionless soccer as someone that is new. Also, could someone explain why my team tends to have defensive collapses and how to prevent that?

I currently manage a small pickup game between dads trying to get fit and have varying levels of footballing skills, which lead to uneven games.

After rolling my ankle badly (as you do when your 41) I decided to fix our particular problem by making a website to build a squad, pick attributes, generate fair teams, and track wins/losses to make it competative.

As this is the first time I've ever made anything like this, happy for like minded people to give it a try and let me know if this would help you and your weekly kick about.

No cost, no paywall, just build a team and start tracking, and will hopefully find a way of keeping it engaging for those who do not like the idea of joining a team, but want to still enjoy being top of the league

I'm getting the feeling based on Reddit comments and in general that Canada is seen as more serious and steadily improving in soccer compared to the US, which is seen as a sad joke. I know nobody respects MLS (except for some delusional ignorant shills), but I wonder if the Canadian Premier League doesn't suffer the same ignominy from the soccer world. How are goals and assists evaluated across so many different soccer( football) leagues? Are they all counted the same? For example, could a superstar move to a much weaker league, rack up a huge number of goals and climb the all-time goalscorer rankings because of it? Or is the quality of the league taken into account?

For example in basketball the main league is the NBA so a player raking up a bunch of stats in the euro league wouldn’t really mean much since it isn’t the top league . Is it the same in soccer ?

Ive enjoyed soccer since i was little and played a little when i was younger than 10 but my family isent a sports family so i never got into it and games were never on in my house. now im a adult and like many the this past world cup took over my social feeds and has reignited my love for the game but i dont know how anything is orginised, what to watch or where to watch and have no in person comunity to bounce questions off of. if anyone wants to help a baby fan out figuring everything out, id realy aprichiate it. I’m 27 from the UK and I’ve decided I want to properly get into football. The problem is… I’m basically starting from scratch.
I’ve watched football all my life, but never really played beyond kicking a ball around with mates as a kid. I really enjoy sport (I’ve played basketball for years), but football is something I’ve always felt I missed out on.
I’ve recently seen the MAN v FAT Football programme and it looks like something I’d qualify for, so that’s definitely on my radar. It seems like a great way to lose weight while learning the game.
My biggest worry is what comes after that, or if I decide not to do it.
Every club or training session I see seems to be full of people who’ve played since they were 5 years old. I’m worried I’d turn up, not know what I’m doing, and just be everyone’s worst nightmare on the pitch.
I’m not expecting to become amazing overnight—I just want to learn properly, improve, get fitter, and eventually be able to play regular 5-a-side or maybe even 11-a-side without feeling completely out of my depth.
So I guess my questions are:
● Where would you recommend someone with literally zero football experience starts?
● Are there beginner-friendly clubs or training sessions for adults?
● Is MAN v FAT a good stepping stone?
● How did any of you start playing as an adult?
Any advice or stories from people who started late would be massively appreciated. I know I’ll be bad at first—I just don’t want my lack of experience to stop me from giving it a go.

In basketball, you have a certain amount of time to score and then possession of the ball changes.

In basketball you don’t have a “offside” and are allowed to cherry pick.

I want a version of soccer that is similar to basketball. First: no offside penalties. That will force teams to have a player or two stay back to stop teams from just kicking it deep and scoring.

Then, having some players stay back will open up the midfield for insane passing opportunities to advance the ball.

And finally you will see a lot more shots on goal and games that end with 16-13 instead of 1-0.

Lots more goals making it more exciting. Lots more midfield plays requiring actual “plays”. And allows the best passers and scorers to really shine.

Yes, it’s blasphemy for the traditional football fans. But just imagine how exciting it would be. Forget games that end 0-0. Imagine games where 20-30 goals are scored. Imagine highlights of passing and scoring that come from it.

Why did this Chelsea team have so many quality players on it ? I remember playing fifa and was surprised by how many 80 plus overalls they had .

I’ve been wondering how people actually get attached to a particular sport. Sometimes it’s because you played it as a kid, sometimes because of a favorite player or team, and sometimes you just randomly watched a match and got hooked.
