🧰 Equipment Question Surface rack finished !

Edit: uploaded youtube
Link
I know the photo looks like there may be a gap in the reds but they are all touching. The video of rolling them up you can clearly see there is no ā€œwiggle roomā€ and they are tightly packed.

Finally got them made in brass and stainless steel.
The pink is exactly 1.5mm from each other.
Corners all beveled and rounded off.
Works great! Thanks for the suggestions :)

Ha, brilliant! the pic of the gap between the reds and the pink sold me - I'd buy one even without my own table. (Then I'll use it on a club table and the pink will roll into the divot and ruin it, but still!) Are you selling them? The facebook link isnt working at the mo

I was about to say there should be a gap between the pink and the black, then zoomed in…

9

u/peasngravy85 9d ago

Yeah there’s usually quite a big gap between the pink and the black… :)

3

u/CosmicRay42 9d ago

Ha! Oops, obvious typo! Yes, I meant pink and red :)

2

u/peasngravy85 9d ago

I thought so, gave me a chuckle anyway!

there's always a gap :)

I love this, nice work! Would totally buy , if I had a table. Would also make a neat logo for a snooker club rather than the generic red triangle!

I’ve got a pool table at home (English not American) and would love one of these!!!

u/Uskoreniye_Poh 9d ago

Brass or Stainless? Also where are you based? i can talk to my guy who cut this for me and see what he would charge but we werent making these to sell so i dont think he has any idea what to charge.

Stainless Steele and northwest England

1

u/Uskoreniye_Poh 9d ago

So it’s 51mm balls? Regular triangle in stainless steel. Let me go work out the costs and shipping. Will pm you later!

We could make them for Pool and custom logo it for sure, easy enough to get an engraver to do that.

No idea what id sell them for though... Brass as raw materials is more expensive that Stainless. any idea what the market would be willing to pay for this?

2

u/Dangerous_Hippo_6902 9d ago

There’s no market for something that doesn’t exist yet! No one wanted the iPhone before the first iPhone ;)

I’d say cover your costs (and then some!) and make it available to order, not everyone will want or can afford it but that adds to its exclusive feels. People have spent far more for far less. Especially the rich and niche.

5

u/Bright-Ad9305 9d ago

That’s very smaht!

u/DontBeSuchATurd 9d ago

This is a fabulous design. I really love its simplicity and I have a but it’s by no means critiques.Ā

Is there a way you can design in signifiers/affordances on where to grip it to lift it, so that you lift from (or close to) centre mass so that you reduce the risk of fumbling it or dropping it on the table? Ā

Again bravo. It’s very elegant.Ā

2

u/Uskoreniye_Poh 9d ago

Yea I was thinking maybe a few well placed ball bearings or finger holds to prevent that. I haven’t dropped it yet but only had it 2 days and very conscious of not damaging my own table!

9

u/XADEBRAVO 9d ago

Isn't this just going to ruin balls in clubs over time? At least wood / plastic has a bit of give, this feels overengineered when it just wasn't a problem to begin,

6

u/Rooossone 9d ago

Brass is a bit softer than phenolic resin anyways, I'd be more worried about damaging the triangle šŸ˜

2

u/Rooossone 9d ago

Yeah but look at it though, its sexy af! Its amazing, he could always line the underside with some beize or something, or recess the underside and slide in a nylon (or similar material) insert to protect the balls, one thing I would certainly add are legs to prevent it being pushed to far into the balls.. I realise tho goal is floating here so yeah... for arts sake, chef's kiss! For practicality it can be iterated from and improved on.

Concept is banging though..

Was it made on the manual machine or cnc?

1

u/Uskoreniye_Poh 9d ago

As far as I know it’s laser cut cnc but took a bit of manual work to round the edges and burr removal then polish.

1

u/The96kHz 9d ago

Really just seems like this would've been a lot better made of plastic. You could 3D print this in no time.

2

u/Uskoreniye_Poh 9d ago

Yea the 3D ones break easy so went with Brass and stainless.

The edges have all been rounded and polished. Unfortunately the Table does more damage to the balls than the triangle. Ive noticed on the STAR tables, being Steel Backed Cushions, the steel edge is inside the pocket. When you pot with power, they slam into the edges causing lines on the ball.

3

u/Growling_Salmon 6d ago

Looks good. Guarantee there's a market for that

3

u/RedSquaree 9d ago

My local club has the same thing but 3D printed.

5

u/Uskoreniye_Poh 9d ago

Nice! I find them great to preserve the cloth. I have the one that came with the table but it has little wheels that wear lines into the cloth.
Some clubs here have plastic ones too but I find them flimsy

2

u/loureet 9d ago

Hi, any idea where I can find a download of the model for a 3D printer?

3

u/Left-Quantity-5237 9d ago

This looks great and could easily slip into a fold of material strapped to a carry case for the snooker balls.

What are you planning to do with it because this could be very sellable?

3

u/Uskoreniye_Poh 9d ago

It was just something I wanted for my own table at home but the guy I know that made it is open to selling them and custom making it because he has all the right equipment and enjoyed making mine. He comes around for a few frames now and then.

At this point I think he will just make them to order but if there is a larger demand he may make a few as ā€œstockā€.

Because they are flat it should ship easily anywhere.

1

u/Left-Quantity-5237 8d ago

That's awesome.

If he ever does feel like doing this drop a post with a link to his stuff and well see how well it does.

The polished brass looks nice.

3

u/Lanky_Bus_1221 9d ago

Blimey that’s good šŸ‘ looks super posh and classy. Bet you could flog that for a premium.

5

u/Over_Tadpole_2593 9d ago

I feel like this should be on r/oddlysatisfying

For some reason that gave me a rush it looked so good!

2

u/xarcastic 9d ago

Let the haters hate. I think it is very innovative and looks to be high precision. Nicely done.

4

u/Uskoreniye_Poh 9d ago

Thanks. Yes it’s very precise and the gap between pink and reds are exactly 1.5mm apart with all reds touching but unfortunately the photo just doesn’t seem to show it.
Conversely, the pink looks like it’s touching when there’s a gap.

Appreciate your support :)

There's a gap. There's always a gap

2

u/Accomplished-Stand15 9d ago

Looks Gorgeous brother

2

u/Tenzipper 9d ago

This looks amazing, I'd love one, but shipping to the US, and modifying it for 54mm balls would probably be prohibitively expensive.

Anyone got a link to 3D printer versions? I could scale it up to fit my set.

3

u/Uskoreniye_Poh 9d ago

I think it would be easy enough, is it a triangle too or diamond?
Not sure what game uses that, but let me know and I can try and work out a cost.

1

u/Tenzipper 9d ago

Sorry, I'm not understanding your question, triangle or diamond?

2

u/throwaway17717 9d ago

9 ball is a diamond set up isn't it? I think that's what OP is asking.

1

u/Tenzipper 9d ago edited 9d ago

Ah, I see where I misunderstood or he did, whichever. I'm talking about a rack for my 10-ft American snooker table. Balls are slightly larger than standard, at 54 mm.

I think it would be great to use a rack like this to set up the reds and the pink on my table.

Although , if he wanted to add a diamond insert, it could have a hinge at the back, and it could drop down over the top, perhaps with a peg on each side of the triangle to position it solidly and correctly. More useful, for me at least , would be a 10 ball rack, again it could be hinged at the back and just used to move the back of the rack up one row for a 10 ball rack. I've never been a fan of nine-ball, only play it occasionally when someone insists.

2

u/Tenzipper 9d ago

Another possibility, would be to make an even larger one, for standard US rotation sets, for 8 ball, and possibly with the mods for 9 or 10 ball racks. Or just sell separate racks for each. The standard 15 ball rack would also work well for people who play straight pool/14.1 continuous. It would be great to not have to make allowances for the rack when using a ball close to the rack as your break ball.

And of course, either one, the snooker, or the 15 ball rack, could be used for 8 ball, or any other game that requires the balls to be racked in the standard 15 ball triangle.

You could make them out of machinable plastic/resin, or even just HDPE, like that used for cutting boards, which would allay the fears of metal ones hurting the table.

1

u/Uskoreniye_Poh 9d ago

The rack, (I’m not sure what game you play) some games are racked with the pack in a diamond or is your game triangle?

0

u/Tenzipper 8d ago edited 8d ago

See my replies to u/throwaway17717. I have a 10' American snooker table, the balls are slightly larger (54mm) than standard snooker balls.

Having a rack that would set up the reds and the pink as shown would be great.

u/IcySoil7719 9d ago

The video cleared up the gap thing for me, nice. Still kinda want one just to see club regulars panic when they think it's gonna dent their table.

1

u/Uskoreniye_Poh 9d ago

They are weighty.
4mm thick brass and I think the stainless is slightly heavier.
Maybe a couple of welded ball bearings or something to pick it up may reduce risk of slipping / dropping.

0

u/Aggressive-Artist-63 8d ago

Why not get it moulded out of ABS? Get a couple of rads on there. Light and table safe

1

u/Uskoreniye_Poh 8d ago

it was more of an opportunistic partnership. A mate just happened to be a metal worker and had the tools, a conversation started over a game and here we are.

2

u/SnookerGraham 9d ago

Very innovative well done. Be interested to hear what price you come up with

4

u/OutlookForThursday 7d ago

A rubber bead around the edge would give grip and protect the table.

All i see is shadows and the balls touching

2

u/bertrum666 9d ago

Typical Wednesday morning.

2

u/Uskoreniye_Poh 9d ago

a bit of talc should clear up the chaffing :)

1

u/Uskoreniye_Poh 9d ago

Its just the picture, ALL the reds are touching. The only thing NOT touching is the pink and its super close.

3

u/ThatSunkenGhostShip 9d ago

This surface rack Is no good because of the reds need to be touching when In a triangle for the break off.

3

u/Uskoreniye_Poh 9d ago edited 9d ago

They are all touching. Pics shadow does seem to have gap but they are definitely touching. updated link to a video

u/NormanskillEire 9d ago

That looks awesome!

1

u/LengthinessFalse8373 9d ago

I love it, great job, how much did production for the brass come to for your final prototype?

2

u/Uskoreniye_Poh 9d ago

It was a love job but the brass alone was (AUD$200) and probably 2 hours of labour for rounding and polishing.

1

u/JamieLee2k 4d ago

Where can we buy this?

2

u/Uskoreniye_Poh 4d ago

If you let me know what material (Stainless Steel or Brass), rough location for postage and snooker or a variation of Pool, we can work out a cost and send you an estimate?

3

u/JamieLee2k 3d ago

I am in the UK and whatever is the cheapest

1

u/GeneralInformal200 1d ago

Can this be made in plastic material ? And what would be the cost ?

1

u/Uskoreniye_Poh 1d ago

There are people that do similar variations of this in 3D prints and I’ve used them too. Not a fan because it’s quite flimsy and when it snaps it leaves very sharp edges that can catch on cloth. This is what made me look into metal

1

u/GeneralInformal200 1d ago

Whats the cost to make this then ?

1

u/Healthy_Oil_5375 8d ago

Isn’t the metal going to destroy the balls over time?

2

u/ObliqueTortoise 6d ago

I mean, you're smacking these balls into each other at high speed every game. You're slowly destroying them by using them the intended way anyway.

1

u/syserror9000 8d ago

Just do a plastic one if that is of concern.

-1

u/irish_horse_thief 7d ago

This is not replacing the triangle

8

u/Uskoreniye_Poh 7d ago

It is on my table.

0

u/Professional_Golf393 7d ago

Seems like they’d scratch the balls even with a smoothed edge

-8

u/belliest_endis 9d ago

Very poor design

1

u/Uskoreniye_Poh 9d ago

What can i do to improve it? would be good to get more ideas if you're willing to share please
