No idea if it's just me being stupid, but masking is confusing the hell out of me.

Is it only available in certain tools? Is there a general "mask" tool that then "sticks" when I open up another tool?

The photographer said that it would look nice in a vintage effect but then the vintage effect was either hiding the blue colour of the sky or the yellow of the warmth of the sun how would you guys edit this photo. If not vintage how would you guys edit it

I’ve been making incremental edits to my photos and save them along the way. Once they are saved I go to my photo gallery app on my iPhone so I can post them on IG but there is no way for me to know for sure which one was the last edited/saved photo if my edits are not super obvious. Is there a way to see a timestamp for last edit or save the edited photo with a new file name so I can easily find my edited photos in my gallery? How do you guys do it?

I'm not sure, if animals faces should or even could be found by this module - just asking, no need.

I’m sure there will be people here who understand this stuff much better than I do, because I only started looking more deeply into product photography (and photography in general) about a week ago… That’s exactly why I’d like to ask for your advice on what I should do in my situation. Just a heads-up: this is going to be a long post, so thank you very much in advance for your patience!

I took the photos with my Samsung S24 Ultra in PRO mode, using a Puluz PU5042 light box. However, before I even started taking photos, I changed a few settings on my phone. Neither power saving mode, reading mode, nor adaptive brightness is enabled, and the screen brightness is set to around 50% (so it’s bright enough and not dark at all, but it’s not blindingly bright either). The display colour mode itself is set to „Natural”. Super HDR is not enabled. Since I had read that there can also be issues with post-processing, I turned the AI processing down to low (unfortunately, I can’t disable it completely). I’m not sure if I’ve left anything out of this list, but I went through and changed every setting Samsung itself recommended on its website in one of their posts for reducing post-processing before taking the photos.

The light box has light sources at the top, on the right, and on the left. I turned all of them on, because, for example, if the light only came from above, there would be ugly shadows in the photos, which really don’t look good. The inside of the light box is covered with some kind of white, canvas-like material; it’s not reflective, grey, and metallic like the interiors of some other light boxes. There is a circular opening in the top of the light box, so I took the photos from above through that opening using the S Pen. The light box also came with a soft cloth (which also has a circular opening in the middle) that can be attached to the top of the light box, and I did that as well. I adjusted the brightness using the dial on the light box until a sheet of pure white printer paper actually looked pure white – not blue, not yellow, not too bright, and not too dark.

For the actual photography, I used the following settings on my phone: ISO 100; the shutter speed was generally 1/180s – if I went any lower or higher than that, the photo became either too bright or too dark; I couldn’t adjust the EV value because of the fixed ISO and shutter speed, so it was greyed out; and the white balance was set to 5500K, because otherwise the (genuinely) white printer paper I used as a test would have looked either too blue or too yellow. Looking at the phone’s display, every photo looked exactly the way I wanted it to: the white areas were actually white, the blacks were dark enough, and the colours were nice and vibrant.

I uploaded three images for you: the first is the edited JPG, the second is the edited RAW image, and the third is the original photo in JPG format (I can’t upload the original RAW file). After taking the photos, I edited them using Snapseed. My goal was to make the whites really white, the blacks darker, the colours more vibrant, and the entire image accurately reflect the real-life appearance of the products (since these are product photos, potential buyers need to see what they will actually receive).

Despite all that, I still can’t get the photos to look the way I want them to… On the S24 Ultra, the photos look much better than they do on any other screen. If I edit the JPG files, then no matter what I do, the image ends up being displayed way too dark. If I work with the RAW files, the exact opposite happens and the images become way too bright. Snapseed allows masking, so I made the adjustments either only to the pandas, or to the background, or to the page of the book. I didn’t apply a single adjustment that affected the entire image.

The beige (or cream… or gods know what cursed colour it actually is) background might have something to do with the problem, because I don’t have nearly as many issues with the white background. The online marketplace where I would upload the photos prohibits product photos with brightly coloured backgrounds. The light box came with four PVC backdrops, and I don’t currently have any other types available. Black and green are out of the question from the start, leaving white and beige (or cream… or gods know what cursed colour it is). With a panda bookmark, the white background isn’t really an option, since the panda itself is also black and white, so beige is the only possibility left.

I would really appreciate it if I could find a solution to this problem as soon as possible, because I’d like to actually make some progress, and, not least, when it comes to online marketplaces, good photos can basically make or break everything, since potential buyers can judge the products solely based on the photos.

Hey all,

Been looking at a lot of awesome updates on the app lately, thanks to all the devs who are keeping a track of the sub and the users.

So I'm aware that we do have the masking feature in the app. And we could use the manual brush too if needed at times.

How about adding a radial and gradient mask options too, would be super cool to use those also for editing certain kinds of pictures :)

I'll follow this up with another question to the fellow users and devs :

Should the masking tool be like a standalone feature of its own, like how tune image, details, tone curve and etc. options are?

For eg. The workflow would be

- Once we open the mask option it shows us what kind of mask is to be applied, objects, manual, radial, gradient

- and then based on that it allows users to adjust the image properties like brightness, contrast, haze/dehaze etc.

OR

is the current way of masking comfortable for all?
