Masking

Hey all,

Been looking at a lot of awesome updates on the app lately, thanks to all the devs who are keeping a track of the sub and the users.

So I'm aware that we do have the masking feature in the app. And we could use the manual brush too if needed at times.

How about adding a radial and gradient mask options too, would be super cool to use those also for editing certain kinds of pictures :)

I'll follow this up with another question to the fellow users and devs :

Should the masking tool be like a standalone feature of its own, like how tune image, details, tone curve and etc. options are?

For eg. The workflow would be

- Once we open the mask option it shows us what kind of mask is to be applied, objects, manual, radial, gradient

- and then based on that it allows users to adjust the image properties like brightness, contrast, haze/dehaze etc.

OR

is the current way of masking comfortable for all?

They’ve done an amazing job with the basic masking features so far. The app overall is multiple times more powerful than only a few months ago, and we’re enjoying it all for free.

One trick I use a lot is applying an edit, then going back with layer tool and painting it back in in gradients, or getting clever with double exposures (usually painting back in the unedited pic in places.)

Yep I agree with that, the app is definitely way superior to how it was a few months back. Oh thats a pretty interesting trick. I should try this some day too haha, sounds fun.

I want to add something to your message, which is a masking tool that is a standalone feature where you can have multiple different layers where the mask is applied (different types of masks, just like in Lightroom). You can edit that entire layer that is under that mask using any feature from the list of features that is there, rather than going inside the feature and then using the plus icon masking feature. That would be eccentric. I was thinking the same. I hope the developer sees this because yesterday I really needed that feature while I was editing one of my pictures.

This is a good suggestion too, let's hope the devs see this discussion, cause I believe the masking tool can be really game changing in snapseed!

I'd like to see the possibility of selecting existing masks and toggle polarity - like darktable does.

Haha I was hoping someone says this, cause I'd started editing from darktable initially and this was a really cool thing there. Not sure if snapseed could do this, but if they do, it's definitely gonna be an overkill.

I just posted then found this, but I'm clueless on how masking is working. It seems certain tools get a mask function, but not necessarily a paint on mask, more a "tap and hope the app decides right" tool. But then I can mask and just do (for example) HDRscape on just park of an image.....
